I created a new user account on my Ubuntu system called 'admin'. I soon realised that after a reboot I could not sudo or access Synaptic or unlock users-groups.

I traced this back to the new 'admin' user having a group 'admin' created which was written over the default system 'admin' group (for system administration). I had to do a recovery boot and delete the admin user (which deleted the group also). Then I had to recreate the group and add my user account to it and all was well again!

With this in mind, my suggestion is that users-groups should not allow a user to create a username that could cause problems with the system. There are several reserved names that should generate a warning before allowing the user to continue. These should include:

admin
root
users
syslog
klog
crontab
gdm

I was not sure if this was a bug or a suggestion, but since the users-groups program does not have this functionality built-in already I am submitting this as a suggestion.

YouTube plugin for Totem is great but it would like to see a button or menu item for save the video on the local disk.

it would be great if i could turn on "moore info" and inside this window i will se some screenshots, reviews, maybe some videos etc

there is a great functionality in some package manager - user rating, more info about packages would be very good especially for new users

from the other side, every user should be able to write review,, add screenshotss etc very easily

this could be made with special option in menu - review this software (just like translate this program, report bug etc) - this would show a dialog with fields to fill - this way, community could rate each software very precisely

imagine this:

user has just removed windows, and now he is looking for svg editor

he just opens package manager - chooses category "graphics" -> "svg editor" and he is able to browse through the catalog, watch some screenshots and videos, and finally choose which software is the best for him

there is ksnapshot, krecordmydesktop and other usefull apps for implemeting this

In the alternate CD (especially DVD in facts), we can choose in a pannel to install or not things like lamp server, ubuntu-desktop, mail server and others.

I used this .iso by booting in the hard disk, and I didn't understood that I must use "space" key to select an option. No sentence specified this function, so I pressed "enter" button, and the installation had continued. And my system was installed without a graphic interface (I had to reinstall my system because my internet connection use wifi...

when browsing another machine via the network, nautilus should be able to ask host machine for thumbnails, instead of fetching large pictures, and creating thumbnails itself.

this only applies if host also runs nautilus.

I always forget which episode I am up to in a tv series.

It would be nice to have a 'watched' emblem for nautilus to drag onto the file after watching.

Spectacles is probably most appropriate icon, which could also be applied to documents etc.

Imagine being able navigate through Ubuntu, without hands or voice. Eye tracking can take laziness to a new level! Just look where you want the cursor to be, and raise your eyebrows to click (blinking doesn't work to well). It could also help people who are paralyzed and can't speak.

Unfortunately, eye tracking requires expensive equipment. It would be neat if would work with one or more cheap webcams. Then there could be four point calibration between eye gaze and the screen.

I'm hard of hearing, and closed caption support should either be added to totem or a dvd player that has closed caption support should become the default dvd player in ubuntu.

Right now, I've heard that vlc media player 0.9 will provide support for closed captioning. No other player that I can find supports CC or will support it in ubuntu.

Closed captioning is not the same as subtitles. Some dvds will have CC, but no subtitles for it.

Windows Media Center supports captioning, and so should the ubuntu media players.

Edit: I have recently discovered the SMPlayer supports displaying captions, however it reads the captions data and displays it like subtitles. It makes DVDs with only CC accessible, however, I prefer the black box for better contrast and visibility.

Everything goes through library which prevents the user to listen to some files without adding them to it.

Exaile (and Amarok?) have a file browser tab ! Why not rhythmbox ?

I have a (UK) Apple USB keyboard that I plug into two PC laptops: one with a UK keyboard, the other with a US keyboard.

The system assumes that the external keyboard has the same layout as the internal one, which makes it difficult to type.

The system should allow one to have a different layout for multiple keyboards.

I think that Ubuntu needs to give the user better feedback for their actions. For example if you copy a small file from one folder to another, nothing seems to happen. If the file operations progress bar doesn't pop up, you have no idea if your computer just did what you asked it to do. You have to visually check that the file has been copied.

To me, the most obvious solution is to introduce a better and more comprehensive default sound theme. In my example, a short sound event could provide confirmation that the file has been copied. There are other examples - file operations; starting applications, changing system settings etc.

I know that a lot of people like their systems to be as silent as possible; but there's no reason why this should be the default. When you think about people trying out Ubuntu for the first time, they might not be so sure of themselves or the desktop environment. I think better sounds could provide an extra level of reassurance, and provide a richer experience overall.

You (brainstorm team) would have less work if there were a *button* at each idea page which easily let *us* mark the idea as 'not an idea', to be reviewed by you, and you can decide if it really is one or not and set the flag

In many environments computers are left unattended (e.g. schools, libraries, etc) and people can launch applications which mimic the look-and-feel of the login application (GDM) in order to get the users username and password.

This is called login spoofing.

Login spoofing can be prevented by using a secure attention key which is a key combination pressed before the user login to launch the password request dialog. This key can only be seen by the kernel, and not sniffed by any application.

I think that we must have a GUI for ipv6 configuration.
Other distributions like Fedora or OpenSUSE, OSX and even MS Vista already have it. IPv4 is dying, ISP's are beginning to distribute IPv6 adresses for 2~3 years and DNS root servers have recently switch to v6 too.
Ubuntu should be ready for the Internet of today and tomorrow and integrate IPv6 (fixed, dhcpv6, RA, ...) in the GNOME 'Network Settings' (and the same in KDE) as soon as possible.

Add the possibility to choose to remember the play position of a video before quitting so we can resume the video (or the DVD) from where we stopped the next time we open it.

Provide the ability to update the system just by right-clicking on the update icon->silent update (or anything) so that no window appears and the full process runs in background. (only for official and authenticated packages of course)

Ubuntu fresh install should automatically login and connect to WIFI when you power up the computer without asking you for any passwords.

I know people are worried about security... But they should be able to turn pass request off if they dont care and they dont want to enter the pass every time.

I would suggest to autologin and autopass for only one account. Would make things much more confortable :)
