Allow User to Choose between a Free or Non-Free installation
Written by retj the 2 Jul 08 at 01:41. Category: Installation. Related to: Live CD installer. New
I think would help a LOT to have the option on Ubuntu's installer to have both options:

1.- Install Ubuntu with only FREE Software
2.- Install Ubuntu with Propietary Drivers and Multimedia Codecs.

This would be a huge improvement and could give a little more sense of freedom when you're about to install the distro.

==============UPDATE===========================

Maybe th installer asks the user to download the codecs?

Brainstorm: add "Mark this idea as 'not an idea'" - button
Written by droetker the 29 Jun 08 at 13:28. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
There are so many "ideas" that are none.

You (brainstorm team) would have less work if there were a *button* at each idea page which easily let *us* mark the idea as 'not an idea', to be reviewed by you, and you can decide if it really is one or not and set the flag

Let us help a bit.

bug
Written by Eldmannen the 5 Jun 08 at 18:36. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In many environments computers are left unattended (e.g. schools, libraries, etc) and people can launch applications which mimic the look-and-feel of the login application (GDM) in order to get the users username and password.

This is called login spoofing.

Login spoofing can be prevented by using a secure attention key which is a key combination pressed before the user login to launch the password request dialog. This key can only be seen by the kernel, and not sniffed by any application.

Add Eldmannen to the repository
Written by gazilla the 3 Jun 08 at 12:42. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Eldmannen application will allow all Ubuntu users to quickly and easily add ideas in Brainstorm just by double clicking on the heading of their favourite Sourceforge project. No more sitting and racking your own brain, just let Eldmannen do it for you.

Eldmannen

(grin) ...and thanks for all the fish.

IPv6 support
Written by ptitgnu the 29 Feb 08 at 17:54. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that we must have a GUI for ipv6 configuration.
Other distributions like Fedora or OpenSUSE, OSX and even MS Vista already have it. IPv4 is dying, ISP's are beginning to distribute IPv6 adresses for 2~3 years and DNS root servers have recently switch to v6 too.
Ubuntu should be ready for the Internet of today and tomorrow and integrate IPv6 (fixed, dhcpv6, RA, ...) in the GNOME 'Network Settings' (and the same in KDE) as soon as possible.

remember last play position on a video/DVD to resume from it later
Written by ktulu77 the 30 May 08 at 19:18. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add the possibility to choose to remember the play position of a video before quitting so we can resume the video (or the DVD) from where we stopped the next time we open it.

Silent update   forum
Written by francois the 20 Mar 08 at 20:16. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Provide the ability to update the system just by right-clicking on the update icon->silent update (or anything) so that no window appears and the full process runs in background. (only for official and authenticated packages of course)

Automatically login and connect to WIFI if only 1 user
Written by ubunteando the 27 May 08 at 21:28. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu fresh install should automatically login and connect to WIFI when you power up the computer without asking you for any passwords.

I know people are worried about security... But they should be able to turn pass request off if they dont care and they dont want to enter the pass every time.

I would suggest to autologin and autopass for only one account. Would make things much more confortable :)

Firefox multi-dictionary select
Written by LC всадник cbet the 28 May 08 at 01:47. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Firefox should be able to select more than one language at same time. This would save the hassle for people that write in multiple languages saving the hassle of having to change it all the time.

By being optional, this feature WOULD NOT affect similar languages since user can simply disable one of the languages selected. A good example that different languages wouldn`t affect each other is that many language are way too different from each other in its alphabet, such as, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Glingon or Elvish.

So if Firefox dictionary finds the word it should be correct cause Japanese characters won`t have similar in Russian and vice versa.

The other case would be to select multiple dictionaries of the same language.

Firefox - offer to kill firefox instead of restart the system
Written by wladston the 22 May 08 at 17:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes, when I try to open firefox, I get this error

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

I propose to change that, including a button - "Close firefox now" :

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process. [Close firefox now]

Provide aspect ratio in screen resolutions drop down
Written by FrankQuist the 24 May 08 at 15:29. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
When you're changing your resolution to another resolution, you'll often get something like this:

1280 x 1024
1280 x 960
1280 x 800
...etc...

Now which one is the widescreen one, and which one is fit for, say, a normal monitor? You'll have to do some smart guessing or maths if you're not experienced. Often you'll go off and try a few.

Why not display the aspect ratio next to every resolution, or next to the preview? An alternative could be to announce a resolution to be "widescreen" for example.

Attach hidden terminal to each application
Written by chig00 the 20 May 08 at 10:21. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For every application which is running automatically create terminal, but don't show it by default. It should be accessible through button in WM menu for example after "move" and "resize" buttons, which will pop-up default terminal program with all messages that program has written to stdout. In this way it would be much more easier to diagnose some software problems for experienced users, and it won't influence usability of system for beginner users.

Remove GCC or install build-essential
Written by Eldmannen the 20 May 08 at 20:42. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu 8.04 comes with the GCC compiler but without the 'build-essentials' metapackage.
This makes GCC useless; its not even possible to compile a simple "Hello world" program.

Either have GCC not installed by default or have the 'build-essential' metapackage installed by default so that GCC works.

Encrypted swap by default
Written by holizz the 18 May 08 at 17:34. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubiquity should set up encrypted swap, unless told not to. Because encrypted swap doesn't require inputting a password every boot, and it increases security against forensic investigation.

Developer comments
This was discussed at UDS-Prague. The main issue with this is that it is difficult to resume after a hibernate.

Remove gendered language in Brainstorm
Written by holizz the 17 May 08 at 20:48. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
There's no option in the Brainstorm profile settings to specify my gender, therefore why does it say "His ideas", "Ideas he promoted", etc. on the contributor page of everybody?

I suggest either swapping he for they and his for their, or rephrasing the text to remove the pronouns.

Prevent duplicate bug attachments
Written by Auzy the 13 May 08 at 09:01. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Every 2nd post here seems to be attached to "Bug #1: Microsoft has a majority market share"

It was HAHA funny to begin with, but now its gotten out of hand, and people should actually be filing PROPER bug's/feature requests anyway.

In fact, I'd imagine that it actually screws up the status system too.

bug
Written by employeeno5 the 12 May 08 at 19:29. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's fantastic that Ubuntu is available in so many languages.

It would be really cool if there were a simple way to have two language packs installed at the same time and simple way to switch between them while using the operating system.

For example, if I set up a Ubuntu computer for a refugee family here in the States that is still learning English, they could use Ubuntu in English, but if they did not understand something they could click an icon or something to "switch on" their native language.

Imagine how helpful being able to compare and contrast a tool tip in two different languages would be to someone learning to speak a new language.

This could make the computer easier to use while also serving as a valuable and practical tool in learning a new language. This could benefit a whole range of students of new languages.

Entering my account shal also unlock NetworkManager key wallet
Written by romu the 12 Mar 08 at 15:46. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Personally, I'm bored to enter my password again after entering a session just to unlock my NM key wallet.

There are a lot of solution to implement this use case:
- remove the protection of the key wallet
- implement a single sign-on service to reuse the user password to lock/unlock the key wallet

This can also be tuned with an option ("Automatic key wallet unlock") in gconf or wherever...

But one password shall really make the system usable !
