Blacklist for malicious 3rd party repositories
Written by Thorsten Sick the 15 Jul 08 at 11:52. Category: Security. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
To solve the potential problem of malicious repositories
(repositories advertised online contain malicious packages. Users add these repositories to their source-list and get infected with the malware in these repositories/out of date repositories like the "attacks on package managers" by the university of arizona):

Add a blacklist to apt where known malicious repositories can be blocked.
The list is kept up-to-date by regular updates.
This is a fix. Not a solution.
Important: The ubuntu repositories must not be blocked (or it would lead to a update-dos)

Set proxy, LAN, etc in one application
Written by -DV- the 22 Jul 08 at 18:33. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi, i'm from Russia... Sorry for my English )))

Related to ALL UBUNTU DISTRS.

I wery often use my notebook in different places. And there are minimum 4 menu must be reconfigured for work with internet (general proxy service, proxy of web brouser (Firefox), proxy for Synaptic, general TCP/IP configuration).

It's will be great if all settings possible to change in one application, for example some "Network Center". I think it posible make this app and make for this app can configure network parametres some popular and often-use programms, and seve current profile for each place where you can connect to network.

I use Ubuntu Studio 8.04 — Hardy Heron with Gnome desctop on my laptop Acer Aspire 4310! It's best LINUX OS that I have see.

Thanx a lot!

Wifi manager : don't ask for Wep Key Type : Hexa, ASCII, 64/128bit,etc
Written by ktulu77 the 27 Jun 08 at 23:00. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Network Manager. New
I don't understand why we need to choose the key (or password) type of our wifi network.

I always try all the possibilities (hexa, ascii, 64, 128bit...) and cross my fingers for it to work.

The best thing to make working my wifi network is still the command line and iwconfig or edit manually /etc/network/interfaces. With these solutions, I never have to specify which type of key i'm using, and it always works.

Can ubuntu simply detect automatically which type of key we have to use ? Or if it is not possible, it could try each type one per one, if one doesn't work, try the next, ... until we have the connection working.

At least one dark theme must be in default installation
Written by jpka the 29 Jun 08 at 09:56. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Early, when first computers arrive, it be equipped with monochrome text display, green or gray symbols on black background. The big advantages is it was eye-friendly (because no extra light energy put to the eye) and no matter of refresh rate (again saving your eyes).
Nowadays, when GUI is most-displayed environment, at Microsoft's hand (or no?) the white background brings to standard de-facto. The reason was "the documents in MSWord looks same as on paper, WYSIWYG or so). But no one worry about people's eyes.
Super-bright displays also burn out our eyes.
The solution is turn back to black background, and using white only when preview docs before printing.
Many years I try to set this color sheme on both Windows and then Ubuntu. But always were elements which out-of-control of colors, when programmers use 'black' color instead of 'current scheme symbol's color.
Another example out-of-control items is baloon tooltips in Ubuntu, address & search lines in Firefox, and many more.
A great advantage is 'invert' function of Compiz. It fixes all! But photos looks terrible...
I suggest that developers of Ubuntu must include at least one TESTED dark scheme in distro.
Thanks a lot!

(I added) Important note: 'dark' theme is not gray, but almost black. Absolutely need that *every* letter of text must be more bright than it's background. Including input boxes on web pages, balloon messages, comments displayed when mouse stay on picture.

Pause File Transfers.
Written by stevoo the 23 Jul 08 at 19:57. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The new update on Ubuntu 8.04 shows you the multiple files uploaded when you drag and drop different files at different times.
A PAUSE button to pause the individual transfer would be nice.

Intel HD Audio hardware is capable of delivering the support and sound quality for up to eight channels at 192 kHz/32-bit quality, while the AC‘97 specification can only support six channels at 48 kHz/20-bit. In addition, Intel HD Audio is architected to prevent the occasional glitches or pops that other audio solutions can have by providing dedicated system bandwidth for critical audio functions.

Disabling unneeded services
Written by sayakb the 9 Jul 08 at 12:33. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Can it be done that the services have a partial sleep mode. ie. for example, bluetooth services will stay disabled until a bluetooth device is actually plugged in. Many desktop users do not have bluetooth and the service has to be manually disabled in some cases..

Grub 2 is available in package "grub-pc" for those who want to use it. Switching to it by default won't be done once it's ready.

Create labs.ubuntu.com
Written by MrTim the 20 Jul 08 at 06:36. Category: Others. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
labs.ubuntu.com could be created in the style of labs.mozilla.com, and utilised in demonstrating and testing radically new ideas ('experiments') for the desktop.
I'm not suggesting that this replace launchpad in any way. It would simply serve as a gateway to completely new projects in order to reduce the amount of sifting through that is currently required on launchpad (each 'experiment' would have a brief description and a link to the launchpad project, similar to Mozilla Labs).
Some examples of projects that would benefit from this system are:
"Long Term Vision" theme - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Long_Term_Vision, https://launchpad.net/long-term-vision
"Epidermis" theme manager - https://launchpad.net/epidermis/
I'm sure that there are many more, which illustrates the need for the site.
I'd like to hear peoples feedback.

Enhance Drivers manager
Written by ilembitov the 4 Jul 08 at 10:02. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
The point here is that Drivers manager should not only download restricted drivers, but it should solve all hardware-related issues where possible. I mean, it should recognize your hardware and download all the drivers available in the repos for you - when the drivers needed aren't on the install CD.

Developer comments
Hi,

There is work under way to enhance the driver manager (called "jockey") to handle more drivers, e.g. printer drivers. Much of this should be seen in the next release.

Printer ink cartridges levels
Written by Eldmannen the 17 Jul 08 at 20:54. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Display the levels of ink left in the printer cartridges.

This way, the user can know which ink is getting low, when its getting low, and when and which to replace.

Change the default screensaver from black to ubuntu logo

We need to change the default screensaver. The problem with the current screensaver is that the first time you meet it is when the screen suddenly turns black during the installation. That is very confusing for most users, as the first thought always is that the installation has crashed.

I suggest a screensaver that helps brand Ubuntu, like for example the "Floating Ubuntu" screensaver. It could also be a textbased screensaver that could run on older machines witch doesn't support 3D.

Include OpenOffice 3 in interpid   forum
Written by kab the 16 Jul 08 at 21:39. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
It seems that for interpid openoffice 2.4 is planed as the office suite. I use openoffice 3 beta 2 every day and it seems that this ab is very stable. So I propose that you include the 3.0 version or an RC of it in the final interpid.

They have made really a lot of improvements and everyone will benefit of it.

I know that you would have to create a packet yourself and can't just import from debian, but I would really appreciate your work.

Developer comments
From Chris Cheney, the OOo developer: If the RC1 release doesn't slip too much we will upload it into Intrepid. Please see: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/OOo30Schedule

Better Network configuration
Written by JKoder the 4 Mar 08 at 12:58. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice if the user could easily setup his/her network. I mean:
If your network provide support IPV6 then with a few click the user should be able to setup the network to use IPV6
The same if the user want to disable IPV6 support for example.
This can apply to any network settings.

IPv6 support
Written by ptitgnu the 29 Feb 08 at 17:54. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that we must have a GUI for ipv6 configuration.
Other distributions like Fedora or OpenSUSE, OSX and even MS Vista already have it. IPv4 is dying, ISP's are beginning to distribute IPv6 adresses for 2~3 years and DNS root servers have recently switch to v6 too.
Ubuntu should be ready for the Internet of today and tomorrow and integrate IPv6 (fixed, dhcpv6, RA, ...) in the GNOME 'Network Settings' (and the same in KDE) as soon as possible.

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Different wallpapers on different monitors/workspace
Written by greycode the 28 Feb 08 at 17:20. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
I've got two monitors, and right now if I use the wallpaper settings in gnome it stretches the wallpaper across the two monitors. It does this even for the default ubuntu wallpaper. This can look really bad depending on the image. In order to get around this I had to get two wallpaper images and join them into one large one with the GIMP and set that as my wallpaper.

There should be a way in gnome to set a different wallpaper for each monitor.

==== Merged with ideas of a similar scope: Different wallpapers on different workspace ===

Many workspaces option in Linux allows you to separate your work, why not allow users to have different wallpapers on each workspace. This allows for easier identification of which workspace you are on.
When used with compiz-fusion you can rapidly switch between your workspaces and the different wallapaper will allow you to quickly recognise what desktop you are on.

Currently this is natively available in KDE but not in Gnome. In Gnome you can't even let Compiz take over the wallpaper control because Nautilus doesn't allow for transparent backgrounds.

Other solutions like Wallpapoz are slow and when switching between desktops it takes too long to switch WP.

Provide explanation of "Done" items in Brainstorm
Written by doughy the 2 Apr 08 at 03:36. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Many times a brainstorm idea is marked as "Done" but I can't figure out where/how the idea was implemented. It would be extremely helpful if there was an explanation that addressed how the idea was implemented at the top of the page. For example.

"The idea has been implemented in the upcoming release of Ubuntu 8.10 in April. To use the new feature, click on System->Administration->New Feature."

Developer comments
This area, "developer comments", is where the explanations of the implemented ideas goes.

And as promised, we now separate the implemented ideas by release.

This way, new users who get Ubuntu, and open Pidgin, see #ubuntu, and can click on it, to chat about Ubuntu and get help if they wonder something.

This could also make it easier to get people involved in the community.
To make it easy for them to get help and to help others.
To make them feel that they are not only using Ubuntu, but that they are actually a part of it.

And hopefully also get some contributors. :)

So if they get involved in the community, and feel they're part of it, they will be like "Wow, I'm in this cool Ubuntu club!" and be proud and go brag about it. :D
