Standardise the icon naming for user folders.
Written by hgibson the 25 Mar 08 at 08:27. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The icon names for the following are not standardised;

/home/user/Music = folder-music
/home/user/Videos = folder-videos
/home/user/Documents = folder-documents
/home/user/Downloads = folder-downloads
/home/user/Public = folder-public
etc..

Have a look in /usr/share/icons/theme/XX/places and /home/user/.icons/theme/XX/places for the present icon naming scheme.

Update: http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html
See table 11

How do we get this spec updated and applied globally ?

Ubuntu usability tests
Written by hgibson the 4 Mar 08 at 07:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usability_lab

Since Ubuntu is largely a community project it is difficult to measure the success of a desktop project. Traditional economics states that the market place is the arbiter of good products. However since Ubuntu is not commercial, how can market forces mediate it's success and determine which desktop software project is a winner.

The monopoly of other software vendors makes it even more difficult to look for indicators of a successful desktop software project. A monopoly eliminates competition and forces a product upon you, market forces do not mediate.

Brainstorm is an excellent step in providing a measurable feedback indicator of a products performance, however we need to measure further by actually testing the product on a larger public audience.

Only then can we objectively determine what needs to be done.

=Methodology=
Setup centers for testing, run by volunteers who manage testing of a prescribed set of common computer tasks. For example:

==Common Tasks==
1. Read email
2. Surf the web
3. Play music
4. Play video

==Admin Tasks==
1. Add a user
2. Delete a user

Make it simple to mirror and share Ubuntu repositories for local user groups
Written by hgibson the 26 Mar 08 at 10:12. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
PROBLEM: The user decides that he/she wants to share the Ubuntu software. He/She has plenty of disk space and is connected to a LAN at work. How does he/she go about it ?

SOLUTION: Create a GUI for mirroring and then sharing the software. The GUI takes note of the Ubuntu version /etc/apt/sources.list and makes reccomendations. The GUI shares the repository via Apache2, SAMBA, vsftp, rsync and P2P. The GUI also leaves an instruction page in the Apache2 web root on how to use the local repository. The end of the setup should present this page so that the local user can send it via email to interested users.

UBUNTU PRO: Ubuntu spreads like wildfire.
UBUNTU CON: Develop the GUI.

Try to encourage other distributions to form partnerships with Ubuntu.
Written by hgibson the 22 Mar 08 at 10:42. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Reading the comments on ideas about this distro does that or this made me think about fragmentation in the open source community regarding the linux desktop. I know this is a sore issue.

How can we deal with this in a way that removes Ubuntu bug #1 without flame wars from the community ?

Do you remember what the word Ubuntu means ?

I would like to see a partner programme which is official and listed on the main Ubuntu web site.

A start in this direction would be to gather some information, such as;

1. What are the causes of fragmentation ?
2. What methods and means are available for more formal co-operation, if any ?
3. Do the various distro's support open desktop standards ?
4. If so, how and where ?

I guess it is flame on now... sadly.

UPDATE:

For more about the meaning of Ubuntu, read:

Very good article.

Remove the "Duplicated Idea's" system and replace it with "Related Idea's"
Written by hgibson the 31 Mar 08 at 14:53. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Remove the "Duplicated Idea's" system and replace it with "Related Idea's".

This accomplishes the following;

1. Prevents good active idea's from being swamped early.
2. Allows any aggregate total of related idea's to be displayed.
3. From 3 above, enables us to see which related idea keeps popping up and needs urgent attention for the UDS summit.
4. It encourages new idea submitters to look in depth at an idea on a related level and see if any detail is missing, then submitting a supporting idea to fully round out the idea.
5. If done properly, it could turn the idea into a virtual specification ready to be submitted to launchpad.net.

This requires present and past idea submitters to review all idea's and post relations. This is worth the effort I think.

Create a business category for brainstorm
Written by hgibson the 14 Mar 08 at 22:09. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu could create it's own revenue stream if it supported small businesses.

There is HUGE potential for this. I saw one suggestion that asked Ubuntu to publish stats about hardware. This is a start.

This could become a self sustaining model. The promotion of Ubuntu on the mobile platform is also a good step.

Imagine if we could put the same effort into a business edition (with partners of course) as there is into the mobile edition.

I forsee the Home Edition and Business Edition. Two simple choices. You either work or play with your PC. That simple.

Adopt a standard set of icons for all desktop versions that is user friendly.
Written by hgibson the 17 Mar 08 at 19:35. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
See: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/CrashBit?content=71140

An average user should be able to determine what an icon's function is simply by looking at it.

The icon design should try to ensure language independence and where possible use international iconography symbols.

The icon naming project is a step in the right direction.

Standard icons would help greatly with usability.

For examples, see:
http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1E1-iconogra.html
http://www.4yeo.com/pagelements/icons/signs/index.htm
http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/symbol-signs

We should get serious about a standard international lexicon for computer/network iconography. I do not believe this has been done before. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Put brainstorm search link into the idea submission page.
Also put search as the top function.
It seems the ideas are all in, now we need more voting.

Start an "Ubuntu Certified Database Professional" program.
Written by hgibson the 19 Mar 08 at 09:28. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Opportunites abound for people able to support databases with php on Ubuntu. Let the world know we have qualified people able to do it.

We can create alliances with established professional organisations that already provide such certifications.

It would be great to see the idea's which could improve training and support.

The main Ubuntu web site already has a training and support section.

Simplify installation and setup of pulseaudio
Written by hgibson the 15 Apr 08 at 08:31. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
See: http://www.ubuntu.sun.ac.za/wiki/index.php/Pulseaudio

It is very complex and intimidating for a new user to activate pulseaudio if using an old Ubuntu install CD.

Provide a method to upgrade and setup in a simple way.

Adopt an approval rating scheme for brainstorm, similar to www.gnome-look.org
Written by hgibson the 25 Mar 08 at 21:54. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The present rating scheme is slightly flawed. Can we change to a scheme similar to http://www.gnome-look.org and http://www.kde-look.org.

The sites above work well with their scheme and adoption on brainstorm should create a more fair and representative rating.

Adopt ONE system font for all desktop versions.
Written by hgibson the 17 Mar 08 at 19:40. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Only ONE font should be used for the system/application font. Leave the other fonts for graphics applications where they belong.

This would help standardise the use of desktop real estate for software developers.

When developing a program you cannot accurately predict the desktop space it is going to use because the damn system font sizes may change.

Windows XP has one system font and developers have made good use of this fact to squeeze as much space as they can for their applications from the available desktop real estate.
