The icon names for the following are not standardised;
/home/user/Music = folder-music
/home/user/Videos = folder-videos
/home/user/Documents = folder-documents
/home/user/Downloads = folder-downloads
/home/user/Public = folder-public
etc..
Have a look in /usr/share/icons/theme/XX/places and /home/user/.icons/theme/XX/places for the present icon naming scheme.
Update: http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html
See table 11
How do we get this spec updated and applied globally ?

Since Ubuntu is largely a community project it is difficult to measure the success of a desktop project. Traditional economics states that the market place is the arbiter of good products. However since Ubuntu is not commercial, how can market forces mediate it's success and determine which desktop software project is a winner.
The monopoly of other software vendors makes it even more difficult to look for indicators of a successful desktop software project. A monopoly eliminates competition and forces a product upon you, market forces do not mediate.
Brainstorm is an excellent step in providing a measurable feedback indicator of a products performance, however we need to measure further by actually testing the product on a larger public audience.
Only then can we objectively determine what needs to be done.
=Methodology=
Setup centers for testing, run by volunteers who manage testing of a prescribed set of common computer tasks. For example:
==Common Tasks==
1. Read email
2. Surf the web
3. Play music
4. Play video
==Admin Tasks==
1. Add a user
2. Delete a user

Make it simple to mirror and share Ubuntu repositories for local user groups

PROBLEM: The user decides that he/she wants to share the Ubuntu software. He/She has plenty of disk space and is connected to a LAN at work. How does he/she go about it ?
SOLUTION: Create a GUI for mirroring and then sharing the software. The GUI takes note of the Ubuntu version /etc/apt/sources.list and makes reccomendations. The GUI shares the repository via Apache2, SAMBA, vsftp,rsync and P2P. The GUI also leaves an instruction page in the Apache2 web root on how to use the local repository. The end of the setup should present this page so that the local user can send it via email to interested users.
UBUNTU PRO: Ubuntu spreads like wildfire.
UBUNTU CON: Develop the GUI.

Reading the comments on ideas about this distro does that or this made me think about fragmentation in the open source community regarding the linux desktop. I know this is a sore issue.
How can we deal with this in a way that removes Ubuntu bug #1 without flame wars from the community ?
Do you remember what the word Ubuntu means ?
I would like to see a partner programme which is official and listed on the main Ubuntu web site.
A start in this direction would be to gather some information, such as;
1. What are the causes of fragmentation ?
2. What methods and means are available for more formal co-operation, if any ?
3. Do the various distro's support open desktop standards ?
4. If so, how and where ?
I guess it is flame on now... sadly.
UPDATE:

Remove the "Duplicated Idea's" system and replace it with "Related Idea's"

Remove the "Duplicated Idea's" system and replace it with "Related Idea's".
This accomplishes the following;
1. Prevents good active idea's from being swamped early.
2. Allows any aggregate total of related idea's to be displayed.
3. From 3 above, enables us to see which related idea keeps popping up and needs urgent attention for the UDS summit.
4. It encourages new idea submitters to look in depth at an idea on a related level and see if any detail is missing, then submitting a supporting idea to fully round out the idea.
5. If done properly, it could turn the idea into a virtual specification ready to be submitted to launchpad.net.
This requires present and past idea submitters to review all idea's and post relations. This is worth the effort I think.

Ubuntu could create it's own revenue stream if it supported small businesses.
There is HUGE potential for this. I saw one suggestion that asked Ubuntu to publish stats about hardware. This is a start.
This could become a self sustaining model. The promotion of Ubuntu on the mobile platform is also a good step.
Imagine if we could put the same effort into a business edition (with partners of course) as there is into the mobile edition.
I forsee the Home Edition and Business Edition. Two simple choices. You either work or play with your PC. That simple.

Opportunites abound for people able to support databases with php on Ubuntu. Let the world know we have qualified people able to do it.
We can create alliances with established professional organisations that already provide such certifications.

Adopt ONE system font for all desktop versions.

Only ONE font should be used for the system/application font. Leave the other fonts for graphics applications where they belong.
This would help standardise the use of desktop real estate for software developers.
When developing a program you cannot accurately predict the desktop space it is going to use because the damn system font sizes may change.
Windows XP has one system font and developers have made good use of this fact to squeeze as much space as they can for their applications from the available desktop real estate.
