Rename top level directory names

Although this was copied from what is probably an april's fool joke, it directly made sense to me. The current directory structure is very confusing to new users and the one proposed below immediately makes sense to anyone:
/bin /system/executables
/boot /system/boot
/dev /system/devices
/etc /system/config
/lib /system/libraries
/home /users
/media /storage
/mnt /storage
/proc /system/processes
/root /users/Administrator
/sbin /system/executables/admin
/tmp /system/temporary
/usr /system/applications
(idea taken from http://blog.drinsama.de/erich/en/linux/debian/2008040101-renaming-directories.h tml)

A new partition type for games

There are beginning to be enough games available for the linux platform, that having a separate partition for all of them might be a good idea. This new type of partition would be designed with speed in mind. Maybe a journaling system that can defragment and only do so when nothing else is going on in the system. Another simpler method might just be to use a ext4 file system for the game partition.

How often you use memtest+ ? nor more than one or two time in whole year. So why not remove the link in grub and make a link in the system menu like "Check my memory at next boot "
With that the boot menu will be more clear.
I thinks 90% of non-geek user never use this tool.

Urge Barack Obama to support the Free/Open-Source community.

What does Obama and Ubuntu have in common? Apart from their African roots, they both represent a grassroots movement for freedom and CHANGE. They both stand for a different approach towards humanity in which everyone helps each other while maintaining a profound opposition towards wars driven by greed.
Therefore, it would be interesting to contact the Democratic presidential candidate and ask him about his position on the Free/Open Source software and what course of action he would take to support it.
Whether we like it or not, the United States of America is one of the most powerful nations and its decisions in economy and trade laws affect us all --even if we don't live in the U.S.
Thus, it is important to urge the (likely) future president of the United States to commit himself to support the Free/Open-Source community by passing laws that support open standards and outlaw anti-competitive practices in the industry as well as promoting the adoption of Free/Open-Source software in taxpayer-funded schools and government institutions.
Although Canonical is a British-based company that cannot release an official statement on U.S. politics, we the users of Ubuntu can raise these questions during campaign rallies and on the Internet. The timing is most appropriate as the candidate is more receptive to people's concerns.
Barack Obama's philosophy is not very different from Ubuntu's and our community. I am sure that he will be more than willing to change things so Free/Open-Source software gets a wider adoption and development.

Strong public action against the OpenSSL

Some media are exploiting the OpenSSL issue to show that open source software is not (and will never be) as safe as private software. In order to preserve the image of reliability of Ubuntu, it would be necessary to carry out the actions needed to fix this issue and publicly ensure that Ubuntu (and the software officialy maintained repositoy) is free now of this issue.

Attaching files to an idea

There were ideas that you could post pictures within your idea.
But it would be even better if we could attach any kind of file to an idea.
I got this idea when I saw that Auzy has developed an easy to use compiling program. If my idea would be introduced he and any other user of Brainstorm could attach his or hers mock-up, working program or anything else.
This is one of those ideas how to change Brainstorm from wish list to something where ideas are not only gathered but also made in to reality.

Option to show mouse when you take a screenshot

Currently, the take screenshot feature (Print Screen key or Accessories>Take Screenshot) hides the mouse when it is taken. It could be useful to be able to show the mouse if needed.
For example, i was trying to explain a bug that caused the mouse to turn into a black box, but i couldnt visually show it because the screenshot hid it.

Intergrate Amarok into Ubuntu

I know Amarok works quite fine under Ubuntu because the necessary KDE libraries are installed but I would really love it if Amarok was properly integrated into Ubuntu...hence GNOME.
I applaud the efforts of the developers of Rhythmbox amongst other programs but I just think that Amarok is THE best candidate as music player of Linux distributions. Nothing comes near to its features and appearance. It is simply beautiful.
I don't know how one would go about it, but if the developers could work their magic and bring forth an Amarok that works in perfect harmony with Ubuntu, I think it would add to what is already a superb distro in Ubuntu.
Currently, things like opening an external browser via Amarok, or setting keyboard shortcuts- I notice that some options are missing...need to function by default. Maybe someone knows of better examples that warrant that Amarok should be integrated properly.
I think it could be a really interesting prospect.

Make the command line easier for converts - add common aliases

Learning shell programming is a bit much to ask people when they want to do simple things, like rename a file. We could make it easier on them by automatically aliasing (I think that's the right term) certain commands. Like so:
command : aliases
mv : rename, move
ls : dir, list
umount : unmount
rm : remove, delete
NULL : to
and so on, with common (to users) words that can be easily translated into commands.
Extra points for educating the user on the proper command, like so:
user1@newubuntu:/home& rename user1 to user2
Translating commands to Unix equivalents:
mv user1 user2
Proceed?
Y
Moving user1/ to user2/
user1@newubuntu:/home& dir
Translating commands to Unix equivalents:
ls ./
user2
user1@newubuntu:/home$

3D mouse/Desktop

We already have a 3D view of the desktop with compiz-fusion and it could have more functionality as it is mostly a an eye candy (best ever btw!), we could add a third coordinate to the mouse (x,y,z), by keeping some button pressed (user defined) or the scroll mouse function the mouse would move on the Z-axis so the desktop will have depth.
As the developers progress on this idea the icons could be drawn in 3D and finally be set up like the desktop shortcuts (icons) as a 3D matrix
photo of a 3D matrix:
http://www.interactivearchitecture.org/wp-content/imagebank/jamesclar.jpg
The looking glass project does something similar and its codes could perhaps be used on this idea.
Plugins that align and move the icons as they were planets could add some beauty to it.

In Nautilus: "preview" mp3/ogg files when mouse hovers over them

In Linux Mint, when the mouse hovers over a sound file in Nautilus for more than 3 or 4 seconds, it starts playing the file without opening any other program, like a media player!
As soon as the mouse leaves the file, it stops.
This is an amazingly convenient feature which I would love to see in Ubuntu!

Custom album art In Ryhthmbox

Maybe this belongs solely on Rhythmbox's site but I would like to be able to apply my own album artwork to rather than only having Rhythmbox download it's best guess.
I listen to allot of music that Rhythmbox can't find covers for or that it applies incorrect covers to. It would nice to get consistency but defining my own downloaded art work.
This is my only complaint with Rhythmbox, I otherwise love it's simplicity, functionality and integration with the desktop.
Perhaps there's a way to do this already, but I haven't learned it.

Disassociate Ubuntu from "Linux pride"

"Linux pride" in the title is meant in the similar way as "white pride".
I don't mean it in the way: "I'm proud to use Linux"
I mean it in the way: "Linux is from geeks for geeks" or something like that...
--------------
A lot of Linux users think they are better then all other OS users. And some of them even want to secure their "geek" position by demanding ubuntu shouldn't be easy for first time users. I think this is against the Ubuntu philosophy "towards humanity" and "Linux for human beings".
So all of you who are voting ideas down, because they want to make Ubuntu easier for first time users, please don't.
I'm not trying to troll or starting a flamewar, I'm trying to give constructive critics.
This dosen't mean make Ubuntu like MAC OS or god forbid Vista,
it just means make ubutnu the most user friendly Linux, that goes for all of other flavours of ubuntu to.
---------------------------------------------
The fame of Linux pride, "linux is for G33ks go back to Windoze if you don't like it N00b" is what is keeping a large portion of users that want to change their OS.
So let us all promote Ubuntu as new user fiendly OS, and think about ideas how to make it even more friendler as it already is

Hire thousand of Chinese programmers

Canonical should hire a legion of tens of thousands of Chinese programmers.
It will be very cheap, and Chinese people are very intelligent and hard workers. Always top A grade students, perfect score on all tests.
In China people work 20 hours a day for only like $2 dollar a day.
We can employ them for only 6-9 hours a day with a great salary of $5-10 dollar per day.
It will be a great deal for them, because they can work less and earn more.
It will be great for us, because we can hire tens of thousand Chinese programmers, a whole legion of them and increase the development rate by a factor of a thousand.

Mount removable storage synchronously

When you plug in something like a USB dongle, it should be mounted synchronously (-o sync) instead of in buffered mode.
For me, this is far preferable to the minute performance gain gotten by mounting the device in buffered mode. You're very unlikely to be using such devices for anything except data storage/retreival, in which case mounting synchronously is a major benefit. Expecting new users (or those used to Windows XP's behaviour) to know you have to right-click, 'unmount', before removing the drive is not a good idea, as well as just being unnecessary if the device is mounted synchronously. It's also irritating for people like me who know you need to do it, but either occasionally forget or don't want to bother.
Mount the thing synchronously by default. This is what Windows XP does, and it allows you to just remove the drive after any file transfers have finished. Yes, problems will occur if you remove it durung a file transfer, but that's gonna happen in ANY mount mode. It's far more obvious to the user that this will cause a problem than removal of the drive before unmounting. Also stop displaying that 'unsafe device removal' message for devices mounted synchronously.
