Submit a Ubuntu GNU/Linux DVD and Printed Documentation to your local Library

Every Library should have a current Ubuntu GNU/Linux Live DVD and Printed Installation Instructions

1. The public libraries do not have up to date information about free software and Ubuntu Linux.
2. The books on the subject are expensive. The books on proprietary technologies are more popular.
3. Burn a copy of your favorite Ubuntu GNU/Linux and submit it to the local library.

Also add in a DVD copy of wikipedia, librivox.org and project gutenberg.

Solution #2: Anyone who knows a librarian, have a word with them...

I don't think libraries tend to take random self-printed submissions but you are right, they don't tend to have enough linux material either. This is ironic as linux being based on the posix/unix model is a more enduring subject than windows which changes every few years.

Librarians are a great bunch of people, they tend to be very smart, pro-freedom, community minded people with a social conscience i.e. exactly the sort of people who would LOVE the ideas and ideals of the free software movement. What they may be lacking is the knowledge of what is out there and that's where we can help...

If you know a librarian have a chat with them and offer to help them choose some good core linux reference books - not just Ubuntu ones.

Persuade them to stock proper copies of the big 3 distros. Burning a CD is a nice idea but they are probably legally culpable for what they distribute and the proper CDs look better.

Make flyers / posters about open source software detailing what it is and where you can order it / download it and ask to leave them in the library, ideally near the computers.
