Vlc as default for video instead of totem
Written by zannabianca the 15 Mar 08 at 19:08. Global category: Multimedia. Won't implement
Totem is a good player, but vlc is much better. Please put the best software as default in ubuntu, because the problems of new users , coming from windows, will decrease a lot with vlc, that recognise more codecs than totem.

Solution #2: Improve totem
Written by hemanth.hm the 20 Mar 09 at 13:17.
Totem is the official movie player of the GNOME desktop environment based on xine-lib or GStreamer.
VLC media player - the cross-platform media player and streaming server

So it's always better to make some thing official more better, normally we end up doing this to support most of the formats

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-plugins
sudo apt-get install w32codecs
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

So , making totem to support most of the formats , without breaking the non-free issues is the challenge , I strongly feel.

Solution #3: Ship both or allow Totem to be easily removed after VLC install
Written by guitarMan666 the 29 Aug 09 at 07:21.
VLC is pretty small, it's probably good to ship both. There are some files out there Totem and GStreamer don't support, shipping VLC to fill the gaps is a good mid-way solution. The other option is to allow Totem to be uninstalled easily wihout taking half of GNOME with it!

Solution #4: Ship VLC as the default application for multimedia (audio, video, music)
Written by sergio_br the 11 Oct 09 at 19:31.
VLC not only replaces Totem but also replaces Rhytmbox, which playlist and repeat mechanism I think is terrible and limited. VLC Playlist is more friendly and has improved options like "repeat all" or "repeat one". VLC has built in equalizer and sound effects. Totem can play in a very simple way a DVD, but has no options for configurating languages, subtitles, etc. Comparing Totem and VLC is the same as to compare an old typing machine and a modern computer and printer. When you start a DVD in VLC - when the disc has these options - it pops a separeted window for you to configure subtitles, languages and so on. Much more complete and powerful than Totem. VLC is open source, so... please adopt VLC and retire Totem for future Ubuntu releases. Also make available the "Open with VLC" option by default for all mime-types related with multimedia, because VLC has just the best codecs, allowing to view and listen to most common formats (wav, au, mp3, mpeg, avi, wmv, etc) , including others not so common as FLV (flash video *.flv).

Solution #5: Ask the user which player they want to use
Written by Lasereyes the 21 Jun 10 at 07:51.
The first time the user opens a video file, they should be asked if they want to use the official video player or be offered a choice of other players such as vlc. Vlc is at least twice as fast in loading videos, supports more codecs, and has a neat streaming feature.

Better wi-fi support
Written by neilneil2000 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:20. Global category: Internet & Networking. In development
More support for more wireless chipsets out of the box and "Windows style" ease of set up.

I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!

Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

Selected solution (#2): never ever download network drivers
Written by snap the 27 Apr 10 at 17:30.
The OS should never need to download network drivers.

Here is what I experienced 2 minutes ago:

1. Disable closed wifi driver (I wanted to try the free one)
2. Enable the free network driver

Result: Ubuntu tries to download the driver but you have no Internet connection ! Why was it removed from disk ?? If I had no other network card, I would be very embarrassed.

In other words, I think network drivers should never be removed from hard disk, or whatever great idea not to self-destruct its network connection.

foobar lamip (not under wine) music player
Written by PavelS the 29 Feb 08 at 13:59. Global category: Multimedia. New
Hi

The only reason I am still on Windows is that there is no native music player like foobar for linux especially Gnome UI. I know there is Amarok for KDE but I myself a huge fan of Gnome. Anyway I need this music player to be just like foobar without having to run it under wine. I know there is something called lamip which is basically foobar, however, it would be very nice if it could be in apt because it is very tedious right now to get it up and running.

If you know of any other plays which will let me navigate through a music cue file and that will play FLAC/AAC and support 24 bit depth of the output then please let me know about it. I want to hear about it. If something like this is allready in ubuntu I would love to hear your opinion.

Thank you

Updated Command Line: Colorized Command Line
Written by stevec the 3 Mar 08 at 20:52. Global category: Others. New
Administering multiple systems and often through SSH, I spend a great deal of time at the command line. While I know the current version is "good enough" and stable, I think the default command line could use some overhauling.

I think the command line should be as colorized as is humanly possible. Almost every distribution now comes with ls aliased to ls --color. That's an example of what I'm suggesting but only the tip of the iceberg.

I don't know if it's the default but I've inherited a Gentoo machine where the prompt itself is colorized, nano, less, and diff are all colorized.

Vim and emacs should have syntax highlighting out of the box (I think emacs might already, but I know I had to edit .vimrc to add colorization to Vim).

It may sound prissy but if you're staring at terminals all day it really makes things so much more readable.

Focus Mode
Written by Shady3D the 19 Sep 09 at 00:12. Global category: Others. New
its hard to focus while having all the notification that distracts you like mail, Twitter, Facebook, or even IM, and many other things, but sometimes you want to filter these results, like in a situation if i want to have notification from a group of people that i work with, so you can receive notification from them only if they sent a mail or chatting with you on Empathy.

also not only desktop factors, outer environment can be also distracting like if you are working on something in a cafe, a crowded place, or even too silent. (when there is no sound some people like me hear a whistle in their ears)

4, 3 example for the first problem
9 example for the second problem

Solution #1: Focus Mode
Written by Shady3D the 19 Sep 09 at 00:12.
the fist problem is partially implemented in Gmail notification that uses notify OSD where i can select a filter from my Gmail filter so it notifies me only if i receive a message that applies that filter

but i want to take this one step forward so that in the notification area i can open options to select "Focus Mode" that will disable all notification, then select what are the cases that can interrupt or notify me, that can be a mail from someone or from IM contact, and i think that will be easy using "People" project

Solution #2: Nature Sound/Noise collection
Written by Shady3D the 19 Sep 09 at 00:22.
the second problem can be solved by Nature sound or noise, instead of listening to music and be more distracted, its better to listen to a static sound that can calm you down.

so if there is a collection of looping nature sound/noise that can be played, i'm NOT asking to have this by default on the cd as it will take space, so if it's just available at the Ubuntu repository that will be great.

many article can be found on applications that can do that on makeuseof.com and lifehacker.com just look for "white noise"

Solution #3: Encourage application developers to allow notification configuration
Written by matthewp the 21 Sep 09 at 00:17.
This sounds like an issue on the application level, rather than the notifier level. If an application is spamming you with notifications, it should use them differently, or at least allow them to be configured.
