Most popup screen are annoying and most of the times unnecessary. Gui applications should be tested and rated and other methods of user interaction be developed. A targeted cross-applicational usability review can lead to improvements.

Ubuntu uses a known bad NTFS-3g driver in it's repositories.
Please keep Ubuntu up to date, since this might (and does) cause data loss, especially on mobile, NTFS formatted hard drives.
Here's a link to ntfs-3g forum thread that verifies this

The bug about which you talk has been fixed in Hardy (LP Bug #229000). Further, this is not the right place for new version requests.

Security and stability centre

What we need is an application which centralises security. I'd like to think of it as "Security and Stability". It should monitor the following in a centralised location:
- Track system crashes/unclean shutdowns of applications and make it easily accessible. If apache has never crashed except the day a server was compromised for instance, it may provide a clue about how it was hacked.
- Firewall status. No IPtables enabled = insecure
- Show all security updates. Users should be informed when there are updates available specifically targetting security (in addition to the applet currently present).
- User rights. If the user is running as root, they should be told the risks.
- Anti-virus. There should be integration with Anti-virus here, or a one click means of listing various versions of anti-virus. Integration should also allow a one click option to start scanning, and an indication if automatic scanning is enabled. It could also offer an easy way to install rootkit detectors and anti-virus. Its better for us to get ahead of viruses, and make sure people don't pass existing ones on (I believe ClamAV is an example of a free one?)
- Rootkit detection. There are lots of Rootkit detection systems out there. I suggest that users be able to click a button and run a quick test.
- Permission checker, Use information from APT to identify changes in permissions to system files. Many newbies do stupid things like change the permissions on a config file so they can access it via gui. Lets make sure they have an easy way to fix it.
- Identify if your network is broadcasting everyones traffic to everyone (ie, hubs, not switches). Maybe not easy, and not really neccessary.

I've been playing around with Apple Mac OS X Leopard and, although the system didn't impress me that much, I loved one feature that I'd really like to see in Ubuntu.
It´s call Quick Look, and allows you to view the contents of a file without open its default application.
This is great when you have a folder with different types of files (JPG, MPG, DOC) and you want see the content of the files quickly without open many applications (Eog, Totem, OpenOffice Writer in this case)
You can look how this work in Mac OS X on here, here and here.

The default Firefox ships with defaults that aren't exactly ideal for speed. If Ubuntu would default to slightly improved defaults (Pipelining enabled for example) it would speed it up and make it more ideal.

Give Ubuntu it's own calendar

It's great that clicking on the clock brings up a calendar - but why Evolution's calendar?
The majority of people use a webmail service, so having a calendar that can sync with major web calendars (eg Google Calendar, Windows Live Calendar), that is easy to add and remove events to, to add alarms and notifications and to be able to do all of this without opening an email application would be fantastic, I think.
Thanks for the oppurtunity to be heard.

Automatically disable the touchpad when you are typing by specifying a number of seconds the touchpad stays inactive after you hit a button on the keyboard. This is very useful on laptops where it is very easy to accidentily touch the touchpad while typeing.

I've 2 distros installed on my laptop: Ubuntu Gutsy and Arch Linux! The feel with arch is that it's whippy. From the other side ubuntu is sluggish. Sure I know that my system is not so up to date (a 1.5 Ghz centrino 512 M Ram) but Arch work very well on it with the same services loaded as in ubuntu.
So I think Ubuntu can do something to improve performance.

It is likely that the situation will occur that you vote an idea up or down, only to then take part in the discussion and change your mind about it. After all, there is bound to be someone with more expertise with a different view on the subject that you hadn't considered. Currently, you cannot see, remove or reverse your vote. I think you should be able to, on the basis that it would give a more accurate and up-to-date representation of user opinion.
The counter-argument to this would be that it could cause an element of uncertainty, but I do not feel that avoiding this should come at the expense of being able to change your mind.

Many games feature the ability to play with other people. However, the first thing the game will check for is to see if it is currently up to date. When Ubuntu enters version freeze, the games fall out of date, and it can be harder to play them online without finding a 3rd party update or compiling it yourself (Freeciv, Scorched3D, and Battle for Wesnoth to name a few). This also creates issues when different distributions freeze at different times, so it can be hard to play with other Linux users.
Ubuntu should provide a repository for up to date games for games that will always need the latest version to play online.

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.
heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops
Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.
We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.
Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)
Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].
Good luck!
Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.
