There are lot of people having troubles syncing their devices (pda, smartphones, etc.) with ubuntu. At this poing there is only one solution available, multisync, and works for only a few devices, and it's very limited on their functions.
And I think, this is a very important point for lots of people.
**Suggestions from duplicate idea 397 work on that idea :
1) Clean up the Opensync and SyncML plugin packages to work properly with Evolution by default.
2) Set up an official Ubuntu SyncML server for Ubuntu users.
3) Possibly clean up open source SyncML clients for the different mobile platforms.
Developer comments
The current status of mobile devices synchronization in Linux is generally is quite shaky. It *can* work but it's a lot of work usually. There are a few efforts around but there's no single project that works in the majority of the situations.
This is also caused by manufacturers not using a single synchronization protocol. The most promising project now is OpenSync[1] which supports basically SyncML 1.1 and the Nokia variation and it works with several degrees of success between phones and desktops but the project itself is in a constant alpha state with a lot of issues, the GUI is simplistic and there are no integrated resources to sync with online contacts/calendars
like Google's. This can be overcome by preparing Evolution and/or Thunderbird to do it.
In short, despite the infrastructure is mostly there, we need work to make it a seamless experience for the user.
Bear in mind that this is a huge effort. Synchronization looks simple but there's a lot of factors and situations that need to be addressed like how to synchronize devices with different capabilities and how to keep 3 way synchronizations (desktop, online and mobile).

Share codecs among applications

I opened a video in VLC media player, and it worked just fine and played.
Then I opened the very same video in Totem, and get the error "The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable codecs to play media files. Do you want to search for a codec that supports the selected file?"
Now this is just dumb. Obviously this codec is already installed since VLC could play it.
Am I supposed to install the same codec for every video player software I use?
The codecs should be shared among applications!

New authentication methods
|

Using password is boring. That's why users choose week passwords. New authentication methods can help solving this problem. I suggest this methods:
* passwords
* usb keys
* bluetooth cell phone id
* any combination of these
In user preferences should be ability to pair blootooth with user and to create authentication file and save it to usb disk. Authentication file will be based on asymmetric cryptography for combination of user and computer.
Imagine situation that you come to computer and you are logged in immediately after plugging usb key. Another example is that someone guess your password but cannot authenticate because your cell phone (bluetooth) is not near computer...
Note: Security could be also improved if user choose to encrypt his/her home folder and on usb key will be stored key to decrypt it. Data will remain private even if computer/notebook is stolen. If it has to be used it must be easy as one click.

Make NetworkManager a panel applet, not a notification icon

I love NetworkManager and think it is a great app. However, I think it greatly abusing the idea of the notification area. I feel NetworkManager makes more sense as a panel applet. As it currently stands NetworkManager ignores the HIG. NetworkManager isn't actually notifying me the mojority of the time, instead it is acting as program sitting in the panel; hence an applet.
I think NetworkManager could still use the notification area when it is in fact notifying the user of an event, such as a network disconection. But the user interaction should be in the applet itself.
From the HIG
-------------------
The utility of the notification area decreases rapidly when more than about four icons are always present. For this reason, icons that appear only temporarily in response to events are preferable.
-----------
Notification Area or Panel Applet?
You should probably write an applet instead of using the notification area if:
* clicking your notification area icon does anything other than opening a window directly associated with the icon (e.g. a mail folder window for a new mail icon, or a print queue window for printer notification icon), or
* there are icon-specific options on its context menu for doing anything other than that

Support different codepages in ZIPped filenames

when exchanging ZIP-files with windows users, there are often problems with german umlauts in the filenames of the zipped files. The umlauts are interpreted as some other hyroglyphs. ark in Kubuntu shows "?" and File-Roller in Ubuntu shows some kyrillic chars. There should be at least a possibility to choose the codepage for filenames in archives.

I'd like to save a little Internet bandwidth in this world, and the power consumption it uses, and be able to record streaming audio from Rhythmbox while I listen to something. Then, later on, I can load that Ogg file and play it.

Possibibilty of taking "snapshots" of sound, like we could do very easy with images (with gimp or gnome) and with video (istambul). Nothing exist for only sound. Good if we hear some content (for example for podcasts)

What's about an resources saving desktop for Ubuntu.
The RAM consumption should be less than 50 MByte, so that you can run it on 128 MByte systems.
So i can use very old hardware with Ubuntu.
What do you think about that?

Ubuntu should offer a version of its latest release which already has applications such as cairo-dock and screenlets installed to make an impression on first time users who dont
know how to make their orange (and ugly) default install look very sleek and functional.
Also, any improvements to the ease of use will attract more people. Look at the loyal following for Macintosh OSX. Simple and eloquent is the key.
Silver and blue colors with some custom icons and maybe a cool ubuntu logo background would seriously improve the first impression.

Center right-click context menu under mouse instead of two the right.

Users almost always move the mouse toward
the center of a menu before continuing. This is a strategy in menu browsing,
and eliminating the need for it could subconsciously make the interface feel
more usable. Why not center menus under the mouse rather than the traditional
method of drawing it right of the mouse? The one exception for this of
course, would be if centering a menu under a mouse would interfere with the
visibility of the menu.

For example in Peru only Lima is shown and we have many other important cities where ubuntu is used.

foobar lamip (not under wine) music player

Hi
The only reason I am still on Windows is that there is no native music player like foobar for linux especially Gnome UI. I know there is Amarok for KDE but I myself a huge fan of Gnome. Anyway I need this music player to be just like foobar without having to run it under wine. I know there is something called lamip which is basically foobar, however, it would be very nice if it could be in apt because it is very tedious right now to get it up and running.
If you know of any other plays which will let me navigate through a music cue file and that will play FLAC/AAC and support 24 bit depth of the output then please let me know about it. I want to hear about it. If something like this is allready in ubuntu I would love to hear your opinion.
Thank you
