Ubuntu's bootloader is a stark black and white screen, filled with confusing options. It gives newbies a moment of indecision, as they try to figure out if they are supposed to choose something, and wonder why there are three or four Ubuntus listed. Then the timer finishes counting down (starting from 10), and the newb begins to feel like he's getting in over his head as his PC boots into Ubuntu.

Too much information up front, stark text-only display, painfully long countdown timer. What would be the alternative? Well, when a Fedora PC is booted up, the first thing the user sees is a graphical splash screen, and "Booting into Fedora (kernel version) in 4 seconds ... " The user can press a key to interrupt and select from kernel versions or alternative operating systems, or just let it boot into Fedora.

Can't we create our own attractive bootloader? Or, failing that, copy-and-paste Fedora's?

Attention! GVFS: move out .gvfs dir from $HOME!
Written by giner the 26 Apr 08 at 21:15. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 Gnome using GVFS. This is wonderful feature, but some wrong!
See my steps:
1) I go to ftp://user@ftp.site.com by nautilus and gvfs automatic mount it as directory at $HOME/.gvfs/somedir
2) I remove my home dir: rm -rf $HOME
Whats wrong?! It will remove all files on my FTP Server! OMG!

For fix it move out .gvfs dir from $HOME (for example to /usermounts or /gvfsmounts or /mnt/gvfs or some else) and create link in $HOME for it if it's needed.

Remove Nvidia logo from startup when using restricted drivers
Written by Ape the 5 Apr 08 at 05:59. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
There is that annoying Nvidia ad every time I boot X. That comes with the restricted drivers. It would be better without the Nvidia logo.

EDIT:
It can be manually disabled with

Option "NoLogo" "True"

in xorg.conf, but the logo should be disabled by default.

EDIT2: This idea has been implemented on the newest drivers. Please mark this idea as done.

ODF printer, such as PDF printer.
Written by bbauto the 6 Apr 08 at 13:34. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I can't find an ODF printer!? I have used PDF printer for the last 10 years, and find it very handy.
If you want people to embrace ODF, i think this would be the first step to fix.
(OS independent of course!)

Enable "history-search" with Page-Up/Down in /etc/inputrc by default
Written by matteodefelice the 27 Mar 08 at 11:56. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The first thing I change in my Ubuntu installations is to uncomment the lines:
# alternate mappings for "page up" and "page down" to search the history
"\e[5~": history-search-backward
"\e[6~": history-search-forward

In /etc/inputrc. I found this option very useful.
Of course the second thing I change is to add rm/cp/mv aliases with "-i" flag, but this is another story (and idea!).

All the desktop relevent stuff that is installed on ubuntu per default is a dependency of ubuntu-desktop. It would be better if they are only recommended (and ubuntu-desktop is installed --with-recommends then).
That way one could remove one of those programs without ubuntu-desktop being removed

Accent "Category"
Written by giner the 26 Apr 08 at 22:30. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Need make accent on "Category" (Bold, Large font or some else) at mixed lists (lastes ideas, random ideas, etc).
