Option to disable Nautilus   forum
Written by menollo the 1 Mar 08 at 18:43. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd like to disable Nautilus as startup item
I'm using PC man file manager (http://pcmanfm.sourceforge.net/). I also use it as desktop manager, I've disabled nautilus as startup session, but when i start nautilus (for ssh support or some program starts it) Nautilus adds itself as startup item (and overwrites my desktop), I like an option to choose de desktop/file manager..

These: http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/nonautilusplease scripts can replace nautilus but not for all desktop managers..

Create Distro-Unique applications to manage the system   forum
Written by retj the 13 Apr 08 at 23:24. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Would be really useful to create applications like theese to manage your system:

- Ubuntu Configuration Tool: A control Center that allows you to configure every aspect of your system with GUI linked to gconf-editor.
- Ubuntu Package Manager: How about a SINGLE app to installl your software? This app should merge Synaptic, Add/Remove and Update Notifier.

Theese concepts worked for many distros including the cute daughter of Ubuntu: LinuxMint (This distro has its own ''MintSoftware'' like MintMenu, MintInstall, MintDesktop... etc...

Simple Installer
Written by TheChosenOne the 10 Jul 08 at 08:20. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
instead of this complex mess just like windows double click install its in the menu and ready to go. (the thing i hate most about this is it is so complicated to install something)

i have always found it hard to understand how to install something that comes in .tz.gz and things like that that tell me to type this and that and then in the end it doesn't work theres no automated installer for a lot of programs. A lot of programs are not always in those lists such as freshly made ones you get off small sites.

To include the "apply" button option in menues
Written by catalania the 9 Jul 08 at 18:55. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
To include the "apply" button option in menues

English
When I started to use Ubutu, I was surprised and disappointed to watch that all option that I select, they applied at the moment, without my permission, without preview. In themes, icons, etc.

I think is necessary to put this button, like in Windows, when you are selecting things, you have the option to “apply”, because, if I make a mistake, I can’t CANCEL in Ubuntu, because the options apply at the same time that I click on they.

Don't require password for installation through add/remove programs
Written by Ubuwu the 25 May 08 at 20:24. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On a regular Ubuntu installation, there is no reason you should type your password before installing applications through add/remove programs. It only contains applications that are in the Ubuntu repositories and are safe to install. It is not possible to remove essential parts of the system through it.

If a user has rights to install programs, they can do it anyway, asking them to type their password has no added value. Requiring a password here only trains users to type their password whenever a dialog pops up that asks for it. It should be reserved for situations where it is really necessary, like situations where you could harm your system by making changes.

Policykit allows to selectively set permissions for things like this. A password should not be needed for installing programs, to be cautious it could be kept required for removing applications.

When Window is too big to fit on Screen - Provide a scroolbar
Written by LostOverThere the 24 May 08 at 12:22. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
Currently, if you run at a low resolution (particularly anything under 800x600) Windows will not fit completely on screen, and you will not be able to see the bottom half of the window.

It should be noted that when the user changes the resolution to a smaller size (under 600px high) the resolution dialog is too big to fit on screen, and the user cannot click or see the "Accept", "Close" or any other buttons/information.

Providing a scrollbar would fix this.

When you login, if you type wrong username/password, there will be a slight delay before it lets you try again. This is a security feature.

I propose that we decrease (or remove) the delay on the first failed login attempt. It would be a convenience.

The other failed attempts (after the first failed attempt) would still have a delay though.

This would make the system more forgiving if you type wrong, yet still maintain security.

Disable image zoom by default in firefox 3 for hardy
Written by peetie the 22 Apr 08 at 17:21. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Please leave CTRL+ and CTRL- as zoom text only; and add a new key binding for zooming image + text.

Zoom is great for making web sites more readable in Firefox, and the new site specific zoom tracking is particularly cool. However, the image zoom is not alway required (or desired). Sure the idea is cool, but the image scaling algorithm in Firefox is lousy, and the common problem (in my experience) is text which doesn't show up the proper size.

A nice to have would be to improve the image scaling algorithm (high quality), and caching the scaled images per site.

Include the possible filesystem check on boot in the graphical bar progression
Written by samovian the 19 Apr 08 at 07:50. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It is quite unprofessional to see a text style boot every file system check. Include this step in the graphical ubuntu bar progression and add an one line information to notice the user why the boot is longer.

Do not use Black Screen screensaver during installation
Written by webhamster the 18 Apr 08 at 20:05. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it is very confusing that during installation, the screen suddenly becomes black. It would be much better if there would be at least a simple image, so that the screen does not look like the computer just crashed.

Rename Tabs for Open Pages
Written by damienhunter the 13 Apr 08 at 19:41. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Have the ability to rename tabs of open programs at will by right-clicking the tab on the open programs panel, and selecting "Rename" from a drop down menu.

This would be useful for me right now, where I have two programs I need to switch between open (a questions manual and a solutions guide) but both have generic names so I have to spend time determining which is which.

If the renamed tabs saved this would increase efficiency the next time. Also maybe have a button to reset title to the default title provided by the panel.

Instead of having two seperate installs have it support both without choosing different ISO downloads or allow us to choose during set-up.

Create and Ubuntu Service Pack (SP) like Microsoft Windows
Written by felixcorrales the 11 Mar 08 at 17:18. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Please create and Ubuntu Service Pack (SP1, SP2, etc) like MS Windows.

If the user have to install Ubuntu, and there are a lot of updates, it will be easier to download an Ubuntu Service Pack (SP) with all the new updates, fixed bugs, etc.

Also it is very helpful for an IT team when they have to install or reinstall Ubuntu into several machines.

Regards

Felix

Give the bird in Hardy wallpaper a slightly calmer tone of color   forum
Written by alvevind the 27 Mar 08 at 20:26. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The bird in the Hardy wallpaper (Fela Kuti) has very strong colors of red, orange and yellow.

This is great from a marketing perspective, but from a usability perspective the use of signal colors in the background is not a perfect choice. Our eyes and brain will inevitably give some attention to the strong colored figure, which is not optimal during daily use.

The color strength on the bird figure should be tuned down just a *little* bit, to improve the long term user comfort. Not much, perhaps a 5% lean towards the background swirl tone.

Give Ubuntu a Personality (Make popups have a life)
Written by Truefire the 6 Apr 08 at 00:47. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be sweet if Ubuntu talked. E.g.: Instead of,"Your computer needs to restart, etc" we would have,"I need to restart because I just got updates! For those updates to work properly, click Restart below." This will not add to the frequency of popups, just give a more personal feel.
.
It will make many people more comfortable with their computers. It feels less 'geeky'. Maybe put a face in the Ubuntu Logo, like Finder in a Mac for these popups.
Overall, this will be a revolutionary yet simple step in the direction of the truly 'user-friendly' computer.

Keep up the good work guys and gals, we appreciate it around the globe.

Don't ship apps with mixed localizations
Written by HOMBRESINIESTRO the 5 Apr 08 at 16:50. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Apps that have some visible strings missing in the localization in one language should be shipped completely in English to avoid a mix of translated or untranslated strings.

Missing localizations look very unprofessional. Most end users don't know or care about the localization process but should have a convenient experience. That's why Ubuntu should take care of missing localizations and remove localizations that are not finished (or in a reasonable state) from the respective apps.
