make F-Spot photo manager a Picasa/iPhoto contender
Written by gabtrat the 5 Aug 08 at 21:25. Category: Graphics. Related to: F-Spot Photo Manager. New
I don't think I'm alone in that one of the first things I do on a fresh install of Ubuntu is remove F-spot & install Picasa. I don't what too, but I find that there is so much more that I can do with Picasa. I would love for F-spot to become the photo collection application of choice.

Here's a few things I would like to see:

*configure folders to watch for new pictures
*Organize pics in folders & tags
*easy UI integration to send to photo sharing websites, order prints, or email pictures
*automatic cleanup & sorting of photo collection
*tons of easy to use picture tweaks & photo effects
*easy editing of pics in the Gimp
*support for video

Slider bar for zoom in nautilus
Written by gabtrat the 4 Mar 08 at 07:17. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One awesome feature of nautilus is that you may zoom in or out to change the size of the icons. Currently there are 3 buttons to control the zoom: zoom out, a percentage of your zoom level (resets when clicked), and a zoom in.

Adding a slider bar that adjusts the zoom level would add some polish and make it easier to adjust. This could be similar to the zoom in Microsoft office 2007 as show in this pic:

add cd ripping to Rhythmbox Music Player
Written by gabtrat the 1 May 08 at 11:18. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sound Juicer is fine, but there's no reason to have 2 apps when one will do. Rhythmbox should be an all encompassing application for your music collection, which includes CD ripping. Most every other music manager application has this integrated and the main music application for Ubuntu should too.

add more "Click effects"
Written by gabtrat the 1 May 08 at 10:45. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In hardy there is a cool effect when clicking on a launcher in the panel. These should be added for clicking items on the desktop & nautilus to be consistent.

Also, options could be added to select what effect happens when a folder/launcher is clicked. For example, Ubericon (http://ubericon.com/) is a great little utility that adds this to Windows and has several different plugins for what effect is used. Since one of the goals for intrepid ipex is a "Complete desktop redesign" this would be a good thing to add.

I think such "eye candy" such as the click effects is something that should always be kept in check. Such effects are good additions when they add something useful, don't eat up a lot of RAM, and are not primarily there just to look cool (compiz fusion has had a lot of debate about this). The click effect is useful to know for certain that the computer has recognized your click/double-click to open something. Otherwise I've had moments where I've opened several of the same application when my computer was just being slow opening it.

It provides a little visual stimulation AND it does something useful...and I can't imagine it would use much extra memory.

include a way to rotate background at a timed interval
Written by gabtrat the 1 May 08 at 10:25. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Include an option to rotate the desktop background at a timed interval in the Appearance Preferences. There's a number of ways to do this but it would be cool to have it integrated.

Use Flash to improve polish and diversity of default games
Written by gabtrat the 12 Jul 08 at 10:11. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are many different brainstorm ideas on improving games in Ubuntu. The default games included with Ubuntu are great but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

I suggest using Flash to create games -or use already created Flash games- to improve the look and diversity of the games included with Ubuntu.

Flash easily can create excellent looking games with beautiful animations and it would not require a custom gaming environment, nor games to be dependent upon each other. There are hundreds of flash game sites on the internet because of how versatile and simple Flash is to use. It would merely require including an open source flash player.
