Include search engines that support free software and privacy
Written by gQuigs the 9 Jun 11 at 04:17. Related project: Firefox. Won't implement
Currently Ubuntu provides the default Firefox search engines. It makes sense to be more strategic about who we give search engine real estate to. We are promoting them, by providing them by default.

At the very least we could get ride of Bing, a direct competitor and the key company behind bug #1. Others might be good to remove in the future as well.

Solution #1: Provide Duck Duck Go instead of Bing
Written by gQuigs the 9 Jun 11 at 04:17.
Duck Duck Go is a great search engine that is very powerful. It also respects your privacy (http://donttrack.us/).

From the FAQ - Is DDG open source?
Some of it. It's also largely built with "FOSS". We also give 10% of our income to FOSS. Check out this years donations.

Solution #2: Instead of promoting any one, and given option of selecting during first startup
Written by benoyanthony the 8 Oct 11 at 12:26.
Instead of promoting anyone , we can give user an option to select from some 10 or more search engine, during his first starup of the browser

Vlc as default for video instead of totem
Written by zannabianca the 15 Mar 08 at 19:08. Global category: Multimedia. Won't implement
Totem is a good player, but vlc is much better. Please put the best software as default in ubuntu, because the problems of new users , coming from windows, will decrease a lot with vlc, that recognise more codecs than totem.

Solution #2: Improve totem
Written by hemanth.hm the 20 Mar 09 at 13:17.
Totem is the official movie player of the GNOME desktop environment based on xine-lib or GStreamer.
VLC media player - the cross-platform media player and streaming server

So it's always better to make some thing official more better, normally we end up doing this to support most of the formats

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-plugins
sudo apt-get install w32codecs
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

So , making totem to support most of the formats , without breaking the non-free issues is the challenge , I strongly feel.

Solution #3: Ship both or allow Totem to be easily removed after VLC install
Written by guitarMan666 the 29 Aug 09 at 07:21.
VLC is pretty small, it's probably good to ship both. There are some files out there Totem and GStreamer don't support, shipping VLC to fill the gaps is a good mid-way solution. The other option is to allow Totem to be uninstalled easily wihout taking half of GNOME with it!

Solution #4: Ship VLC as the default application for multimedia (audio, video, music)
Written by sergio_br the 11 Oct 09 at 19:31.
VLC not only replaces Totem but also replaces Rhytmbox, which playlist and repeat mechanism I think is terrible and limited. VLC Playlist is more friendly and has improved options like "repeat all" or "repeat one". VLC has built in equalizer and sound effects. Totem can play in a very simple way a DVD, but has no options for configurating languages, subtitles, etc. Comparing Totem and VLC is the same as to compare an old typing machine and a modern computer and printer. When you start a DVD in VLC - when the disc has these options - it pops a separeted window for you to configure subtitles, languages and so on. Much more complete and powerful than Totem. VLC is open source, so... please adopt VLC and retire Totem for future Ubuntu releases. Also make available the "Open with VLC" option by default for all mime-types related with multimedia, because VLC has just the best codecs, allowing to view and listen to most common formats (wav, au, mp3, mpeg, avi, wmv, etc) , including others not so common as FLV (flash video *.flv).

Solution #5: Ask the user which player they want to use
Written by Lasereyes the 21 Jun 10 at 07:51.
The first time the user opens a video file, they should be asked if they want to use the official video player or be offered a choice of other players such as vlc. Vlc is at least twice as fast in loading videos, supports more codecs, and has a neat streaming feature.

Written by gQuigs the 25 Mar 08 at 23:33. Global category: Hardware support. New
My computer has a single bad memory address in it.
I should be able to use my computer.

Currently we let people test that they have badram, let's give them the best solution we have.

Add pidgin-encryption to the default install
Written by hurricanefloyd the 20 Apr 08 at 19:00. Global category: Internet & Networking. New
For privacy and security reasons, pidgin-encryption should be enabled on all Ubuntu machines. Considering it is already available in the repositories, it would not be difficult to enable this plugin by default.

Ubuntu Centralized Image Installation/Recovery/Backup
Written by roaksoax the 17 Sep 08 at 00:11. Global category: Others. New
The idea here is to have an application, which will run on a server in a LAN, and will help us manage multiple clients (Server or Desktops) in the LAN.

By this I mean having an application that helps us manage the Server/Desktop client through a centralized server and that will allow us to create images of the installed OS (Ubuntu) in the client machine, and restore it when needed, doing all this from the Centralized Server.

This idea emerged from the need of having such tool on Computer Labs (In Schools or Universities), where they regularly need to reinstall programs or an OS on their machines if something goes wrong with one of it. So, by having such application, we would be able to restore images remotly from the centralized server to the client machine, and this will aid the administration of a computer lab.

Similar to what RIS (Remote Installation Services) is, but just for Ubuntu.

Automatically start virtual keyboard or virtual mouse when one is not detected

When I start the Ubuntu LiveCD and my keyboard or mouse isn't detected that is very annoying. We cannot expect people to know shortcut keys to start a mouse, or how to turn the on-screen keyboard on.

Solution #1: "No input" Recovery
Written by gQuigs the 20 Mar 08 at 19:11.
No Keyboard, but mouse: ask if user wants to start on-screen keyboard

No Mouse, but keyboard: ask if user wants to enable mousekeys (numlock keys as mouse), alert user of how to turn on and off

Fully Utilize AppArmor/SELinux on default desktop for all applications
Written by gQuigs the 12 Mar 08 at 04:42. Global category: Security. New
I believe we need to be proactive about the security of our systems. Also, I think Fedora fully uses SELinux for all of there default desktop applications.

Security should not be an add-on after the fact. We also should endeavor to make sure people's first reaction is not to turn it off. Fedora has failed at that with SELinux, many guides have that as their first step after installing.

This would also require a GUI for notifying a user of a security breach (and allowing them to allow it?)

Remove GCC or install build-essential
Written by Eldmannen the 20 May 08 at 20:42. Global category: Others. New
Ubuntu 8.04 comes with the GCC compiler but without the 'build-essentials' metapackage.
This makes GCC useless; its not even possible to compile a simple "Hello world" program.

Either have GCC not installed by default or have the 'build-essential' metapackage installed by default so that GCC works.

Replace Usplash with RedHat Graphical Boot (RHGB)
Written by moomex the 25 Mar 08 at 08:34. Global category: System. Won't implement
Red Hat Graphical Boot provides a clean and simple interface to the boot process

It's more than just a splash screen. It's real.
It shows a real progress bar.
It also allows you to maximize a window that displays the boot log.
It actually opens it automatically if there is a failure.
The reason why it's pretty is because it is running XOrg.
It's a special Xorg just for it which is turned off after a successful boot.

Take a look at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/g/images/430615/1_rhgb.png

Developer comments
As others have commented, RHGB is going to be deprecated in favor of Plymouth, so is not something we would transition to from usplash in any case.

Add the Nouveau (OSS nvidia X drivers) to repos
Written by centx the 1 Mar 08 at 03:10. Global category: Graphics. Not an idea
For those who not have heard about Nouveau, it's a project working on reverse-engineering and coding what is supposed to be working OSS (3d)drivers for X.

In its current state it probably is not stable enough to become a part of the default install, replacing the NV driver, but I think it would be great to have the Nouveau drivers available for testing in some standard repos (universe or multiverse or something).

The drivers should probably be updated quite often to keep up with the development, as it is, as mentioned, not "production-ready" yet.

Either way, if someone want to be able to use them at a daily basis, maybe a -experimental/git and one -stable could be produced for the different use cases.
