Ability to see who voted up or down on a story
Written by johngunderman the 29 Feb 08 at 02:37. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This feature exists on sites like Dell's IdeaStorm and Digg, and it helps simulate conversation over why people voted different ways, or simply to find people that vote similarly to you.

Ubuntu TV Edition
Written by yman the 29 Feb 08 at 06:13. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Canonical should form a partnership with a big hardware vendor like Dell to create and market a media center. The media center should be sold as an appliance, and as such shouldn't be sold as "Ubuntu" or "Linux", but as a media center.

This media center should feature multimedia stores, games stores, and sell also as a gaming platform, with free "sample games", i.e. open source / free software games ready for easy & free download. These sample games should include all good and complete, or close to complete, FOSS games.

Dell would profit from selling the hardware, and Canonical would profit from the online stores paying commission per purchase or something similar. This would also probably mean a lot more multimedia released and available in open formats (without DRM), and more games for Linux.

MC is easier to use for novice users than vi or pico/nano if during the installation process the user is strands in textmode. MC is a powerful editor and filemanager that is still easy to use.

Universal installer standard
Written by dennistm the 3 Mar 08 at 11:49. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Please create a universal installer that will work on all distro's of Linux and that has a creation package.

I am thinking of the MSI files and software like Install Shield for creating the MSI's.

Currently using make of shell scripts just to be sure that an installer will work on all distro's is a little troublesome.

My opinion of this is that it will take Linux from hobby OS to a usable OS for all users.

Make GIMP work like Photoshop
Written by elias1884 the 4 Mar 08 at 01:16. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Photoshop is the industry standard for Pixel Manipulation Software. They worked our a pretty damn good interface over the years. It is not just that everybody in the business knows it, but that it is intuitive and therefore easy to learn.

We need GIMP to work just like that.

GIMP technically can do everything that Photoshop does and moreover, as it is OpenSource, one can even enhance it or script it. GIMP is cool in technical matters.

But the GIMP interface is just too much influenced by how thing work in the code underneath, things that are not important to the user however. So workflow is just plain horrible. You can not get quite productive with this tool.

We need to soften these rough edges so we attract even more people to join the community.

Me, I can do with it everything I need to and I use GIMP exclusively for Pixel Manipulation. I have not even installed Photoshop any more in Wine.

But I could not imagine recommending it to anybody who has to work on it 24/7! I know they could not be as productive as they are with Photoshop ever and I know that GIMP usability would drive them crazy.

One of the serious problems in Ubuntu is that Gnome is a bit sluggish when it comes down to the graphics. Try to install AWN and you know that the icons literally look like shit (compared to OSX).
But the problem does not end there, the whole system should be vector graphics by now when it comes to rendering the windows, menus, icons and so on.

I know this is not a Ubuntu feature, but it should be pressed HARD upon so we also get the great crisp sharp user-interface OSX has. It does not make the system slower, just better. With vector graphics, CompizFusion could take a new leap forward since it is then not hold back by the limitations of bitmap images. Also new graphical applications would be easier to develop, see on the mac side where Quartz engine has helped make a sea out of new graphical applications. We need a Quarz engine for Gnome now!

Ubuntu Media Center
Written by Pc_Madness the 29 Feb 08 at 00:56. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Pleeeeeease make an Ubuntu Media Center. I'd love to move my server over to Ubuntu but there are no good Media Center for it, so I'm stuck on Windows. :(

Audio/Video/Pictures support would be the bare minimum needed, but TV Tuner support/Web Browser/RSS Reader/whatever else you guys want would be excellent as well.

I know theres already an Ubuntu MC project (which is dead I think?), but it was going off in more of a FrontRow direction, where as I was kinda hoping Ubuntu could implement a proper MC like MCE or MediaPortal.

Restoring the bootloader by Ubuntu installation CD
Written by vinlos the 29 Feb 08 at 10:46. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If I install Windows after Ubuntu, it's impossible to boot Ubuntu until I install again GRUB following several instructions.
My idea is adding the option "Restore bootloader" in the list which appears when Ubuntu installation CD start. The aim is to offer a simple way to restore GRUB without loading a live distribution, opening a terminal and following a long series of instructions

[Edit 06/03/2008]
In my opinion, the user SHOULDN'T boot the Ubuntu Live Distro. It would be an unuseful waste of time.
Instead, it should be possible to select a new option among those ones of the startup menu of the CD.

GUI for smbpasswd   forum
Written by frandavid100 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:40. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently samba sharing is (in my opinion) broken, since you can't share your folders through the GUI. Instead, you have to resort to the CLI in order to create a samba user which pretty much defeats the whole purpose of a GUI.

My proposal is to modify the samba share dialogue so that it allows to create samba users:

export look and feel   forum
Written by snorpey the 28 Feb 08 at 17:42. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If i want to share the "look and feel" of my desktop with someone else, i have to send many different files: wallpapers, gtk-engines, gtk-themes, metacity themes, iconpacks, screenlets and so on.

I would like to press an "export look and feel"-button to get a file with all the look-and-feel-related stuff included, so that i can reproduce my complete look and feel on another machine.

I dislike a lot that the system makes a hidden folder "/trash" in the USB, floppy and others ... The erasure should be direct in these elements because it is very confusing to have this hidden folder storing it erases not even know it

Most business laptops and some of the end user ones too now include a fingerprint reader.
Those are perfectly possible to use on Linux either by using thinkfinger (IBM/Lenovo) or fprint (HP).

The various PAM modules for those should be installed by default or at least be easily installable and integrate correctly in the default desktop.
GDM, gksudo and the gnome screensaver would have to be modified in order to correctly support fingerprint readers.

That way the user would be able to login either by entering is password as usual or using his fingerprint.

Provide an official live 'gaming' repository

Many games feature the ability to play with other people. However, the first thing the game will check for is to see if it is currently up to date. When Ubuntu enters version freeze, the games fall out of date, and it can be harder to play them online without finding a 3rd party update or compiling it yourself (Freeciv, Scorched3D, and Battle for Wesnoth to name a few). This also creates issues when different distributions freeze at different times, so it can be hard to play with other Linux users.

Ubuntu should provide a repository for up to date games for games that will always need the latest version to play online.

Create and include a 'Speakers and sound' graphical configuration tool that would be able to configure the system soundcards and speaker settings (from simple stereo to surround 5.1, 7.1)

Digitally signed binaries
Written by Eldmannen the 29 Feb 08 at 15:18. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Preferably make all the binaries in the system be digitally signed.

Or at least digitally sign some of the most important system binaries.

Canonical Ltd. can sign the Ubuntu system binaries.

This gives enhanced security because it verifies the application identity and ensures its integrity.

Microsoft and Apple digitally sign their binaries.

Must Change the name
Written by kyubi the 29 Feb 08 at 15:19. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
They might add GNU/Linux to the name, example:

Ubuntu GNU/Linux.

Sometimes Cononical refers to Ubuntu as Ubuntu Linux, and other people more...

Linux is only the kernel of the OS, the complete OS is named GNU/Linux.

Ubuntu as son of Debian GNU/Linux, must use GNU/Linux in its name.

It's GNU/Linux, dammit....
