Hi guys!
packagekit gets more and more attraction, i don't think that i have to explain it here, someone who knows this page knows also packagekit and its possibilities i.e. share package discribtions & news, openoffice.org can use it for the installation from additional packages/art; automatic printer driver download from lsb-site and so on...

more here:

and a really hot presentation from fosdem08:

Developer comments
Unfortunately the needed pieces didn't come together for PackageKit in Intrepid. Hopefully they may be ready for Jaunty.

Install a better scanning program by default
Written by picpak the 29 Feb 08 at 00:24. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Seriously, xsane terrifies me. I'm completely lost each time I use it. It reeks of that poorly designed early-90's hacker-app feel. There's Scanner Utility in Add/Remove, but it doesn't let me scan all of my scanner. Can we please have something similar to the scanning programs of Windows?

Batch image processing.

It often comes up that someone wants to do the same thing to many images. For example, someone got some pictures off her digital camera and wishes to convert them all into a good size to email. Or perhaps someone wants to convert dozens of images to thumbnails for his website.

My idea is to allow someone to select many images in Nautilus and allow a context menu (right click) option like "Resize All Images". A utility window (a small window like that provided by "Send to...") would appear allowing some basic options—some factor controlling dimensions, file format, compression level if applicable. The images would be converted. I'm not sure if the converted images should have new names and/or be in a new subfolder; the old files should not be replaced.

This idea obviously applies to dealing with a single image, as well.

I think this sort of utility could be convenient for common tasks. Currently I would just use imagemagick on the command line, but I think that this operation could be GUIised nicely.

This might seem like a somewhat esoteric feature, but it seems like it could be indeed useful. It is always a joy when a piece of software does something extremely simply, and this seems like it might be a case where Ubuntu can be that way. (Think import soul.)

Prevent applications from stealing focus   forum
Written by smenjas the 29 Feb 08 at 01:34. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm constantly frustrated by applications stealing my focus. There should be some way for me to ensure that when I begin typing somewhere, an overzealous application will never pop up in front of what I'm working on.

If an application needs my attention, it's task bar button should simply pulse so I can turn my attention to it when I'm ready. Pidgin does this; why not everything else?

On Mac OS X, Growl provides a system-wide way to notify the user that something has happened without getting in the way. I'd very much like to see Ubuntu adopt something like that.

first ask all questions - then install - don`t ask in the middle
Written by Theodore the 3 Apr 08 at 20:19. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is concerning the graphical and the text based installer.

It`s a bad habit introduces by microsoft. Do not ask questions in the middle of the installation after you did already started to copy things.

(1) The user starts the installation.
(2) He is asked if he wants to install.
(3) Make as many hardware tests as you need.
(4) Now ask all needed questions.
(5) Install Ubuntu in one run. Tell the user he can no go away for perhaps X minutes.

Otherwise it`s annoying. Input answer, wait a bit, input answer, wait again over and over again. You can improve this!

Smooth Window Resizing
Written by nami the 8 Apr 08 at 11:28. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Even on my Athlon 64, when I resize windows, it is not particularly smooth.

Can this be smoothened?
