[125] (Try to) partner with the Dutch government

As you can read in this article: , the Dutch government wants to use open standards. If a part of the government wants to use closed standards, they have to justify that and have very good reasons.

The article is already from 2007, and meanwhile some things changed. The most important thing of all is that the European Commission approved the plans. Furthermore, they choice for opensource is now almost mandatory. At first the different bodies didn't have to justify the use of closed standards as much as they have to do now. It's strongly discouraged.

Links:
The announcement of the Dutch department of Economic Affairs(Dutch): http://www.ez.nl/Actueel/Pers_en_nieuwsberichten/Nieuwsberichten_2008/November_2008/Instructies_rond_gebruik_open_standaarden
The website with the lists of choices(English version):http://www.forumstandaardisatie.nl/english/

Why on Brainstorm? I think this is a great opportunity for Ubuntu/Canonical. A lot of Dutch government organizations(also the semi-government) now have to switch to open standards. If Canonical would advertise its own products and Ubuntu, they could benefit a lot from this change.

What can be done? First of all Ubuntu/Canonical should get well-known by the persons that make the decisions. This is also a task of Ubuntu NL, if they would contact the media when big Ubuntu things happen or when the media made a mistake, Ubuntu could get a lot of new attention.
Canonical should also do its share. According to European rules government organizations have to allow companies from all over the EU to execute their order, e.g. when they need a new ICT-system. Canonical should participate here.

[80] 'Complete' theme manager

How about being able to choose an OS X-theme and in one click you get the aqua-look, compiz-expo with spaces-look, the widget-layer, a suiting ikonset, a Safari-theme for Firefox and Cairo-Dock using an OS X-theme?

Or in one click be able to get a Vista-look complete with the desklets, an IE8-theme in Firefox, compiz set to mimic 'flip-3D' and the whole bloatness of it all?

Or how about a Borg-theme (the StarTrek species, not the tennisplayer) using StarTrek icons as well as changing the wallpapers and skydome to get that nasty Borg-cube when rotating the desktop cube - or a Borg-theme (the tennisplayer, not those weird folks I spoke of before) using the Compiz cube deformation plugin with the right desktop- and cubecap images to create a desktop-tennisball with 360-degree shot of Wimbledon arena as skydome...

So there's this guy who wants to check out GNU/Linux. During installation he get's the choice to choose which 'theme' he wants. He picks a Windows-like theme and this of coarse makes his transition to GNU/Linux easier. He uses the 'Ubuntu-art'-feature to download a wallpaper with a Corvette '58 as wallpaper.

His wife on the other hand, she uses a Mac in the office and always preferred that, she choose an OS X-like theme when creating her user account. Now, using fast user switching she goes from her husbands Windows-look and midlife-crisis-corvette-wallpaper to her OS X-like theme with that picture of her son in dipers as her background picture.

Their son, very irritated over his mothers choice of wallpaper, he on the other hand has that Borg-theme I mentioned above. Which? I'd guess the StarTrek-thingie - tennis is so 1980's...

To do this you'll need a theme-manager capable of making the GNOME-settings, capable installing a dock (like AWN or Cairo-Dock) or desklets. It must also be able to change the Firefox- as well as Compiz- and dock-themes - and all in one click...

Allow initial installs of ubuntu to come with a startup gui that would require entry of their laptops specific brand and model number. This information would generate a wiki entry on ubuntuforums.org where others with the same hardware could gather and share hints about compatability and troubleshooting. A good example of what I'd like is at www.thinkwiki.org. The wiki node per laptop could also be a good place to link relevant forum threads. This GUI could alternatively be integrated into the "System -> Hardware Testing" program as long as it would run automatically the first time a user logs in. It could even generate a bookmark in firefox for the wiki entry created /applicable to that model laptop/system.

[3] car pc and/or media package

I'm new at this so please bare with me:

Could we get a package similar to the way we get kubuntu, ubuntu studio, xubuntu, ..., that would give us a basic interface useful to pc's like a car pc or a media server? For instance, take Android from google and implement it specificaly for something useful in a car pc.

Since ubuntu supports mobile networks, we should easily be allowed to sync these pcs with our home servers similarly to the way we would sync an Ipod to our computers. Just log in, sync our music, pictures, videos, and any other folders we may need, so we are always connected to the media that we want.

I was thinking of a basic gui, with only about 6 icons to choose from on each page, similar to iphone, blackberry storm, G1. Then, have a media app that acts like a client to connect to the server end(possibly a database). Everytime I download a song or download pics from my camera to my home pc, my car pc should automaticly detect this and sync. Also, if I do the same on my car pc, all the files should automaticly sync up to the server(home pc).

I've already tried to start developing something like this, but I didnt' get to far. Don't know where to start :-D

If something like this already exists, then sorry, and please point me to it, or atleast let me know where to start :-D

Thanks

edit: I would like to be involved in the development of this idea

edit: Ok, I think I am able to redefine what i'm trying to say here. I would like Ubuntu MID edition to be available for regular pcs. Therefore, those of us that like building our own pcs, can go ahead and build something with a touchscreen. I would like to build my own pc, whether it be for my car, for my entertainment system, or for my desktop/office and have the ability to use a touch screen instead of the need for a mouse and a keyboard.

[18] PulseAudio - Bluetooth device proximity switching

This is related to this idea:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/15119/

My idea is to seemlessly have any music follow me from computer to computer.

Here's a usage case:
I'm listening to my music on my laptop in the garage. When I and my bluetooth-enabled phone leave the proximity of my laptop, my laptop "offers" its sound stream to the network. Then, when I and my phone show up at the desktop in the living room, the living room computer searches for audio streams with my username (or bluetooth device ID) "attached". When the desktop computer finds the laptop stream, it automatically starts to play the stream from the laptop on the desktop.

If somebody is already actively using the desktop (logged in, etc.) at the desktop computer, it wouldn't change anything at the desktop computer, as that would be rude.

There could also be the problem of multiple audio streams, in which case it would be nice to setup a priority of streams so the desktop computer doesn't try to play my girlfriend's audio stream when my audio stream is available.

If a Ubuntu Server Home edition came out, it would be cool if it could act as a director to connect audio streams as they become available and queried. Yes, I realize this could be a lot of work.

There is a slight security issue with this, as it could be possible to track the physical location of a user as they roam around. This idea should therefore be an option, turned off by default.

I am very open to suggestions, so please tell me your opinions if you vote it down.
My idea is to let me search .iso files with the "Load" button.

How other way you expect user knows this is possible?

Ubuntu is one of the best Operative Systems out, no doubt. One of the most laptop friendly in my opinion too. Though there are some things I believe should be really taken into account.

1) WiFi and Touchpad buttons:
The Ath9k Driver and The Touchpad Driver worked for me right out of the box, however, and I'm not the only one with his problem, the touchpad and wifi buttons to turn on/off these devices usually don't work on ubuntu unless you do some compiling, and even then it's not guaranteed to work, Again, the devices do work, but the buttons to turn on/off don't. This is something that is stopping many laptop owners from making the full switch.

2)Loading problems:
On battery power, many times ubuntu gets stuck and takes up to 15 minutes to go on graphic mode

3) When shutting down:
Same as # 2, many times it takes up to 15 minutes to shut down.

EDIT: #2 and #3 were edited and generalized, because they were in fact (at least in my case) bugs

I recently switched my Macbook Pro from Hardy (fresh install) to Intrepid (fresh install).

And I'm really disappointed but performances issues: DVD playback is not as smooth as it was in Hardy, and my Internet wireless connection speed is been divided by 2 at a minimum.

If I take the simple example of my wireless: was it really useful to people to switch from a well know performing driver like madwifi, even if not more supported, to a pretty new, instable and buggy driver like ath9k (in my case)?

Ok for the features, but whatever the domain or application we talk about, a switch should always be without any performances loss.

I think the recent Phoronix test perfectly illustrate this point:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_bench_2008&num=1

What about adopting a different Ubuntu schedule? for instance, we should think about keeping the 6 months release schedule but differenltly:
X.04 for features
X.10 for performances

Or something similar.
