I believe it's time to start brainstorming about gnome 3. Creating a new category in our brainstorm we will have a good pool of ideas and also a profile of the ubuntu's users concerning what they are waiting for gnome 3 before the coding really get started.

Ubuntu as main dist that adopts gnome as default will get involved in this project sooner or later. So let's start contributing.

Have you seen the new menus for Office 2007?? its not exactly a menu when you click on it the whole bar change containing the items in that menu...and for example when you highlight some text and want to change the color, just hovering the mouse over the color, changes the color of the text so you can have a preview...

it would be nice having it in futures versions of open office what do you think?

I recently changed all my fonts in system-> preferences-> appearance to size 8 from 10, and I'm very pleased with the way it relieves ubuntu's tendency to look "fat". Try it and see! I think this might be an acceptable default, or at least some kind of option during install ("which of these sample boxes is readable to you?"). I, for one, wish I would have thought to do this a long time ago, as it's like having a bigger monitor.

I think that users today have come to expect fairly trendy interfaces on apps like media players. Totem is a great app, and it's interface keeps with what seems to be a Gnome principle of consistency.

But I think it would be great if a couple of the more user oriented apps (like the default media players) had more bling and wow factor.

The default movie and music players for a start. I would for instance like to see something more like songbird (which is still in beta unfortunately) take the place of rhythmbox.

If we could give totem a shiny new skin with different button layouts, etc. We could make the whole new ubuntu experience seem cooler.

It were being interesting seeing more new window managers when so many people used to keep talking on Gnome-vs-KDE issues. (and who don't have curiousity to see what they are capable of?)

For example, LXDE appeared as GTK-based targeted on more limited machines.

Would be interesting seeing some LXDE-like window manager made on QT4 libraries, to show us how simple, fast and small can be it possible. This can be a very interesting challenge for QT4 and KDE4 developers.

About a name, what about LQTDE? =)

If you're voting -1, please explain why.

How about a better trash/recycle bin other then the current tiny trash/recycle bin that is on the bottom menu bar? At least in windows and OS X it's a full icon like a mounted drive that is on the desktop. The current way it is displayed doesn't tell you it's the recycle bin to remove your files/folders. It needs to be a regular icon on the desktop but one that is not removable since it is an essential function. Once it is on there, then to most consumers it makes sense what it does. Currently it is not intuitive.

Am no technical person. Wonder if it would be possible? Perhaps nobody has got around to integrate a windows abstraction layer with Linux. It might be a great service if someone would do that. I certainly would love to have an operating system that can run seamlessly software designed for windows or OS-X or linux. Or for that matter it would be great if software made for any major operating system or linux distro could be seamlessly installed and used on ubuntu without having to start up a seperate package such as wine.

Now this is probably subject to free formats etc, but the Print Screen screenshot application presently only allows saving in PNG format. This is great and all, but it would also be great to be able to save in other formats without needing to load up the GIMP every time.

Also, a checkbox option to create a thumbnail image file along with the screenshot (say, 160 x 128 or user-configurable) would be hugely beneficial and could be saved with a simple "_thumb" extension to the filename, eg:

Screenshot.png
Screenshot_thumb.png

Would save many minutes of work for those who do lots of illustrated documentation sites!

It would be great if Ubuntu (or other distributions as well) provide an easy to use remote desktop solution. While it's quite easy to connect to a remote X-Server (x over ssh or nx), it's rather hard to get also support for sound (from the remote desktop), printing (using your local printers on the remote desktop) and other things like "tray-icons" / "notification area" (have the Notification-Icons of remote applications in the local "notification area").

Update:
"x2go" looks pretty interesting: http://x2go.berlios.de/index-en.html
It uses the NX libs and they also provide a client for Windows. But I have not tested it (yet).

Gnome needs a revoultion. Ubuntu uses Gnome.
Canonical could help the Gnome3-developers e.g. with money, tips, pc-resources or something else to speed up the development and to create a better Gnome3-release.
(KDE4 has much more features than Gnome, it is faster and looks better (my oppinion). Also it uses the powerful Qt4 as widgetset that is better than GTK+ at time. Gnome is going to leave behind KDE)
[edit] I dont't say that any DE is better, but Gnome needs help and Ubuntu primary uses Gnome. KDE4 is a great DE without help from the Ubuntu developers.
