Use original OpenOffice icons in Human icon theme
Written by fragro the 2 Apr 08 at 12:16. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The original Icons are better in my mind. The Human icons are good for OpenOffice related files but not as program icon!

Icons:

One of the serious problems in Ubuntu is that Gnome is a bit sluggish when it comes down to the graphics. Try to install AWN and you know that the icons literally look like shit (compared to OSX).
But the problem does not end there, the whole system should be vector graphics by now when it comes to rendering the windows, menus, icons and so on.

I know this is not a Ubuntu feature, but it should be pressed HARD upon so we also get the great crisp sharp user-interface OSX has. It does not make the system slower, just better. With vector graphics, CompizFusion could take a new leap forward since it is then not hold back by the limitations of bitmap images. Also new graphical applications would be easier to develop, see on the mac side where Quartz engine has helped make a sea out of new graphical applications. We need a Quarz engine for Gnome now!

Skype support to pidgin
Written by Mario92 the 11 Mar 08 at 18:41. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be easier to those who have MSN and Skype to have both in same app.
This point even only text chat would be nice.

Make the computer give me answers
Written by Eldmannen the 26 Mar 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make a new application or improve Beagle, Tracker or Deskbar.

It do acronym lookups, math calculation, fact lookup, data generation, unit conversion, etc.

So that when I ask it something, it answers me.
RAM? = Random access memory
91*74-26 = 6708
Capital of Sweden? = Stockholm
22 inch in centimeter = 55.88 centimeter
chemical formula for water? = H2O
#0000ff = shows the color blue
01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 = hello
68 65 6C 6C 6F = hello
Hello in Italian? = ciao
Time in Tokyo? = 19:46
Weather in Paris? = 7°C, sunny.
rot13 hello = uryyb

So right from the Deskbar (or something) on the desktop, I can ask something, and it will answer me.

Monkey audio support in downloadable codec pack for Totem
Written by steve196 the 25 Mar 08 at 01:27. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I know, that Monkey audio is an unnecessary format, because flac already does the same thing. But occasionally files happen to be monkey audio. Currently there is no way to play them without running Windows software through wine.
Afaik, there is some problem with the monkey audio license, so it will not be on the cd, but it would be nice to have it in the restricted codec packs.

Automatically start virtual keyboard or virtual mouse when one is not detected
Written by gQuigs the 20 Mar 08 at 19:11. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I start the Ubuntu LiveCD and my keyboard or mouse isn't detected that is very annoying. We cannot expect people to know shortcut keys to start a mouse, or how to turn the on-screen keyboard on.

No Keyboard, but mouse: start on-screen keyboard
No Mouse, but keyboard: enable numlock keys as mouse, alert user of how to turn on and off

If both are not detected we don't have any good options but we can still tell them that we haven't detected a keyboard or mouse.

Create a tortoisesvn-like program for Version Control Systems
Written by silwol the 21 Mar 08 at 06:57. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I use Bazaar, Subversion, CVS, Git, Mercurial etc. I have to use the command-line or some standalone gui program. This is a lot of overhead because I usually do have a nautilus window open which is showing the working directory.
I would like to have an application which integrates fine into nautilus and has similar capabilities like tortoisesvn has for windows - see http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/ExplorerIntegration.html for some screenshots.
Of course this new application should not be installed by default because it confuses new users. It would be nice if there could be one single application that supports many backends for different version control systems.

Do not install gcj/gij (obsolete GNU Java) by default
Written by jespdj the 14 Mar 08 at 13:08. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Currently, Ubuntu comes with GNU Java (gcj/gij) installed as the default Java. (I'm not sure but I think it is because OpenOffice needs Java).

Unfortunately, this is a very slow and incomplete version of Java 1.4, which does not run many Java programs very well. Because of this, many users get in trouble when they want to use some Java programs - they don't work well and run very slowly. The solution is to install a better Java, such as Sun Java 6. Sun Java 6 is not 100% free and open source software (yet), so it cannot be installed as the default Java with Ubuntu.

There is, however, a much better free alternative implementation of Java than gcj/gij, IcedTea: http://icedtea.classpath.org/

IcedTea is based on the source code of Sun's Java, with the non-free components replaced by open source alternatives.

Proposal: Instead of the obsolete gcj/gij, install IcedTea instead as the default Java. (Fedora 8 does this already).

OpenJDK is now the default Java for Intrepid

GUI for elderly people
Written by asathoor the 16 Mar 08 at 21:57. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For our parents and grandparents it would be nice with a very simple Gnome interface. Most of them just want a browser, an oowriter and perhaps skype or pidgin. That's it.

So with 2-5 icons they would be perfectly happy.

As administrators of such systems wee would like to be able to control the pc via ssh or something similar. And to backup their data remotely via rsync.

They also tend to inherit the PC's that we don't need anymore. Hence Xubuntu would be the obvious choice of such a distribution.

Attract New Developers to Ubuntu and Open Source
Written by aantn the 13 Mar 08 at 13:28. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is built on the philosophy that every user should be part of the community. Many users help out in various ways, however very few start programming because of the traditional difficulties.

1) Many people just don't know where to begin. Create a developer resource website and a "Beginner Developer Package" as mentioned in idea #4354.
The website should mostly contain articles aimed at new developers. It can link to external resources (e.g. the KDE and GNOME developer websites) for more advanced information.

Both the website and the developer package should be maintained by the general Linux community. Although the project will not be distro specific, The Ubuntu community will benefit greatly by sponsoring the project.

2) Bring back Canonical Code Bounties to motivate new developers.
Integrate them with community bounties as mentioned in idea 1295.

3) Create a Ubuntu Design Rewards website. (Idea 2961.)
Most developers coding for OS X and Windows have never even heard of Ubuntu. Mac OS X in particular has a costant stream of neat new apps. We need to capture their attention and bring them to Linux by way of contests and prizes.

In particular, Canonical should focus on attracting high school and university students. Google has been sucessful in bringing students to open source by using prizes and monetary incentives (GSoC and GHOP). We need to be more welcoming and do the same.

Make Linux Libertine the default (serif) Font in OpenOffice
Written by fragro the 19 Mar 08 at 13:49. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Linux Libertine is a very good readable and well designed serif Font. Lightyears better than any other Times* Font.

The most effort is the upper case "ß". (There are only the lower case defined yet)

http://linuxlibertine.sourceforge.net/

I've written my Diploma work with this Font and it looks great!

Latest VLC version in the repositories.
Written by anabelle the 24 Mar 08 at 02:22. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
VLC to me is the best player for Movies, Videos, DVD's, and DiVX! Well its time for everyone to upgrade vlc because there is Multiple vulnerabilities found ( http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/489283 ) allowing for the execution of arbitrary code and Denial of Service. But ya know? Im glade I had to upgrade lol, vlc added a whole new face a ton of bug fixes and a few new features :)

Seen in: http://www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/2008/03/new-face-to-vlc-media-player-090git.htm l

Remove Firefox extensions from repositories
Written by Adys the 12 May 08 at 18:56. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Firefox extensions are a pain to maintain in the repositories, and very often lag behind when updating them. They should be removed as they are EXTREMELY easy to install from Firefox itself.

Ubufox may be an exception due to its nature though.

The Avant-Window-Manager is now on the repositories, but it's extras applets are not. AWN is not too much useful without them.

to use them we must download the sources and compile.

OpenOffice with (real) native GTK
Written by fragro the 11 Mar 08 at 11:07. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Replace the awfull NWF by GTK. (like NeoOffice with Cocoa) NWF is often unstable and inconsitent. A clean GTK version will also run on multiple plattforms like OSX or Win32! In addition it might be more portable for mobile devices like OpenMoko based ones.
