Update-manager should be able to run on auto-pilot
Written by hspaans the 13 Jul 08 at 15:47. Related project: Update manager. Won't implement
Currently update-manager is only able to automatically install security updates, but for most users it may be handy to get everything updated for there stable release without interrupting them. It would save me some calls from people asking me what that icon is doing in there system tray.

Auto-generated Ubuntu Laptop compatibility DB
Written by zartocle the 15 Dec 09 at 10:41. Global category: Hardware support. Implemented
Laptop compatibility is increasingly becoming vital for every OS that aims to be competitive nowadays. I never had great troubles with Ubuntu but we don't live in a perfect world; there is still some uncertainty when somebody comes to decide to buy a new PC.
Yes, there are online databases like www.ubuntuhcl.org , but users have to manually and purposely register there and write down reviews; I think that process could be automated, at least partially.

Selected solution (#1): Tweak System Testing to request laptop model
Written by zartocle the 15 Dec 09 at 10:41.
I think it'd be very useful a tweak to System Testing prompting the user to insert his laptop name, after the test has been completed: that could be used to automatically compile a table listing the results of the test for every laptop which was tested. This could be made partnering with www.ubuntuhcl.org or by creating a "Laptop DB" into Launchpad: something simple, just a table showing model and test report for every hardware part. The maximum result with the minimum effort...

Thank you for reading. Have a nice day! :-)

Selected solution (#2): Engage big companies to help!
Written by Andaril the 16 Dec 09 at 00:51.
Ask help in testing laptops, hardware and creating drivers.

Even if driver for special keys will be proprietary it will be more comfortable wait for free one having working one already.

Selected solution (#3): Open Hardware
Written by Andaril the 16 Dec 09 at 00:59.
To make open hardware became true is need protect business that will manufacture it. If all world will make only one open hardware part I think it will be more then possible to make open PC in near future.

Selected solution (#4): Compatibility DB for single hardware components
Written by hlippek the 29 Dec 09 at 09:16.
I think, it would make sense having a compatibility-DB of the several HW components that are used in Laptop models (e.g. for network, wifi, sound, graphics, ...). Many Laptop-models use same HW components.

The DB should include information about the state of driver support for Linux, drivers in Ubuntu repository, propritary/open-source.
A Laptop-Model shoud be seen as a combination of many hardware components. With that DB you can create some kind of Rating or percentage of compatibility for each Laptop Model.

Selected solution (#5): Tweak System Testing to request desktop models as well

I like solution #1 but I think desktop model requests should be included as well.

Selected solution (#6): Integrate Into Web API
Written by armware the 12 Jan 10 at 07:43.
This way the ubuntu installer that runs in windows (wubi, i think) could, if not detect, ask what model the computer is and could lookup the compatibility and give an honest, up to date assessment, and hopefully expandable details.

Selected solution (#7): wine apps similar DB for ubuntu compatibility. computers and hardware components
Written by pererik87 the 14 Jan 10 at 00:42.
Many people are having problems with drivers etc. and the solutions are often different for each computer, and some computers's have multiple problems that NEEDS TO BE FIXED. Make it easier to check if the computer or hardware you are going to buy works with ubuntu.

I was looking at this http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&sTitle=Browse%20Ap plications&sOrderBy=appName&bAscending=true
site. then the thought, what if it was desktops on this site. And then what if it was hardware there as well.

This would make it easier for everyone. developers can use this as a database to check how people solved problems. new ubuntuers can find a solution to all their computer problems all in one and easily check for problems before buying. the sales devisions can check it fast if a costumer ask.

neither one of these is good enough or has a inviting look usability and feel over themselves.

http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/
http://www.ubuntuhcl.org/
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport

The forum is a help, but its not always as easy to find what you are looking for and is not presented quite as nicely.

they are working on something here.
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/better-hardware-database

so my suggestion is as following. a similar database to wine apps, customized to suit the needs and look of a hardware database, complying to all the needs developers, community, users, newbies, expert, computer vendors and others might have.

Nautilus should perform file operations in a separate tread
Written by Nxx the 9 Jul 08 at 09:18. Related project: Gnome. Not an idea
When triing to access bad-burned CD or an FTP site, connected by a weak link, Nautilus temporarily hangs. You cannot click icons and even the contents of the Nautilus' windows not refreshed, so they display garbage. It would be much nicier if such operations were performed in a separate tread than the user interface-related stuff. The contents of the window can display "Please wait, operation is being performed" or show a clock image instead of garbage that is displayed now.

The Windows Explorer show the same problematic behavior, but even worse in that it also incorporates the taskbar in the same tread, so when stuck with file operations, even the taskbar is not responsive.

Implement A Device Detection Tool & Install Check Tool Like Solaris Does
Written by erythrocyte the 9 Nov 08 at 14:38. Global category: Hardware support. Implemented
Solaris has two nifty multiplatform utilities called "Sun Device Detection Tool" ( http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp ) and "Install Check Tool" ( http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/install_check.jsp ) . A reincarnation of the former is also implemented in OpenSolaris and is called "Device Driver Utility" ( http://dlc.sun.com/osol/docs/content/IPS/devdriver.html ).

These utilities basically check to see if your hardware can run to its full potential on Sun's operating systems and the names of specific drivers for that hardware. This way users have full confidence about what to expect from their systems before they install the OS, with zero fuss. It would be great if these utilities could be ported to Ubuntu or if similar utilities could be implemented in the near future. Hardware manufacturers and buyers can see for themselves how compatible any given system is, with a couple of clicks of a mouse!

Detailed descriptions follow:-

--
Sun's Device Detection Tool:

Sun Device Detection Tool helps you to detect whether the Solaris Operating System (OS) can be installed on your x86 or x64 system. This tool indicates in a couple of minutes whether the Solaris OS supports the devices that are detected in your x86 or x64 system. It generates a table that shows whether a Solaris driver exists for each device that the tool detects. The table also indicates whether the driver is built-in with the Solaris OS or available in OpenSolaris community web site or whether a third-party driver is available.

To Improve the mouse setup via the GUI

Solution #1: Have the system auto detect the mouse and allow more customisation via the GUI
Written by domsmith the 8 Feb 09 at 13:24.
More advanced controls for setup of most common mice.

The ability to remove mouse acceleration to give a true 1:1 pixel movement within xwindows/gnome.

Ability to set binds for mice with more than 3 buttons via the GUI.

Auto detection of mouse dpi 400/800/1600/2000 etc.

Number values instead of the current slider.

Promote the usage of free formats
Written by Primož Papič the 8 May 08 at 20:55. Global category: Others. Won't implement
I know it's not really the issue of CANNONICAL or ubuntu, but still.
I'm using kubuntu, but i save all of my files in doc, because
odt isn't supported everywhere, i listen music in wma format
(don't really know why not rather in mp3) because no mp3 palyer or anything like that supports ogg format. I have to write my seminar work in times new roman, because my faculty demands that all the documents to be written in this font.
The idea of free software is lost when the society demands that you use non-free formats...

Solution #1: Lobby for implementation of free formats
Written by Primož Papič the 8 May 08 at 20:55.
Well as you see I contemplated for a long time and this is what I came up:
As said in the comments sign on going or start a new on-line petition.
Lobby (with whole open source community) at your government to switch from proprietary software to open / free software.
I remember that I once read that Linux is national OS in China and some other countries.
Demand that your university adds TNR similar open font as their "demanded font".
And all of us that are citizens of European Union should lobby that EU demands from "mp3" producers to produce mp3 players with free formats support. Also we could even demand that computers shouldn't be sold with preinstalled OS
(usually Windows), so that user can choose to buy or self install OS that they prefer.
(I think the EU could do all of this, because it already made Microsoft to exclude media player from windows and also the whole office suite...)
Hope this gives some idea what you can do to promote free formats

Totem Bling thing
Written by dragoninsane the 9 Sep 08 at 07:35. Global category: Multimedia. Not an idea
Totem should have better looking icons, better buttons and appearance and less clutter, I mean smaller size buttons are good, I see huge width of navigation panel when viewing a movie and it doesn’t auto hide when left alone, there should be a way to auto hiding controls and bring back when a cursor I over it or a key is pressed. Allow resizing movie with keyboard plus and minus keys. Arrow keys to move volume and skip forward and back. Make it possible (option) for video to fit in whole window And equalizer and context menu support to add to play list, enqueue in totem play list. I really want to see more than one color for totem and more plug ins and skins if possible.“ turn off and turn on” subtitles in video’s. Integrate into brasero for burning videos and
Sync functionality to portable devices and lastly better management of library like exaile although mp3/video tag editing is worst in exaile. Change the way volume is controlled rather put volume control as a old telephone dialer. Better integration into nautilus and show me better navigation inside totem to open file,
or atleast refresh the theme or icons for totem like kde.

Solution #2: Add Xine players bar
Written by s2skhixjii the 20 Jun 11 at 15:19.
Remember the bar in windvd and powerdvd.
Well Totem should develop a smaller bar with nice GUI.
It doesnt have to be detached, just lessen the screen space that totems ugly little bar takes up unecessarily (the play buttons could be in line with the time bar, saves somuch space)

Xine player is a linux player that is already like this, all that is required is ubuntu to take the XIne bar sourcecode and merge it into the bar of Totem.
Sample look:

XIne comes with many themes to choose from, something which TOtem completely lacks

Solution #5: Make Totem look like this
Written by s2skhixjii the 20 Jun 11 at 17:17.
THe functions of Totem have nothing wrong with it, it just needs a new look, let me propose this as a new possible look
it cuts the rubbish and makes the bottom bar smaller and more appealing

Solution #6: CoolIris
Written by s2skhixjii the 20 Jun 11 at 17:32.
The sidebar has many functions such as youtube etc, but the ugly look hides it all. What would be great is a coolIris add in.
CoolIris is a software that gives a nice feel to viewing pictures and videos from a computer and from youtube. The GUI is amazing, it just needs to be incoorpareted into the main screen leaving the playlist to the sidebar.

CoolIris main site: http://www.cooliris.com/desktop/

PowerDVD has already done something like this, and its pretty amazing

(even windows has it, but we don't)

Allow Guest to Log In from Login Screen
Written by rouge568 the 12 Jan 09 at 04:28. Global category: Security. Implemented
Allowing the guest to only log in from another user's account is, for lack of a better term, stupid. It means that if the owner is not going to be around when the guest uses the computer, he has to give the guest his username and password just so they can log and then switch to another account. This is an incredibly large security hole, that could be easily fixed. Please, if someone types 'guest' when logging in, take them straight to the guest account.

Selected solution (#4): Use a "Login as Guest" button
Written by Bender2k14 the 24 Jan 09 at 22:50.
If someone does not have an account on the computer, then they probably do not know that logging in as "guest" is an option, so make it obvious with a button that says "Login as Guest". AOL has this "feature" and I have always liked it.
