Synaptic/update manager pause button
Written by vexorian the 26 Aug 08 at 13:13. Category: Installation. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
Let's accept it, package downloads do allow resume, however, this resume involves cancelling the download, seeing a very scary error message (for some reason synaptic does not figure out you canceled the install and assumes there were errors in the installation/update process) and then trying again to install/update the packages, there you notice the parts you already downloaded are still in your harddrive and synaptic continues the download.

How about we help those users that are not psychic or experienced, those who would think cancelling the download would make them have to download everything again or even cause system corruption, how about we give them a pause button?.

What is keyring good for?
Written by Richard.Kolodziej the 26 Aug 08 at 22:26. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Gnome. New
Lets forget that I really don't know what a (or "the") keyring is good for and look at the other people who cannot set their computer up by them self.

I don't remember on which occasions I was asked, but the question was something like: "Would you like to add this password to your keyring?"
Or different: "Enter a new password to the keyring."

"No, I don't want to enter a new password, I already have a password! Why do I have to create another one?"

I am sure that there is a good reason for keyring to exist but it wasn't explained to me. I know, I am supposed to look it up on the internet but here comes the idea:

It would be great if there was a short explanatory sentence about keyring - what it is good for and why I have to write another password - when I'm being asked for a keyring password.

Idea Spotlight
Written by DanRabbit the 18 Aug 08 at 23:43. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Have a section on brainstorm where we can see the top 10 developer picks for the month. This will do many things:

1. Get developers to see and pay attention to this website. (I hope that they already do)

2. Let the community know that the developers actually do see and pay attention to this website.

3. Draw support or opposition to ideas that developers may be thinking about including in the next release.

4. Let the community know what sort of things that the developers are interested in seeing in Ubuntu :D

5. Give positive feedback to the contributors by letting them know that they made the top 10, even if their idea takes a long time or never actually gets implemented.

Offer to omit trash when no disk space left
Written by borsook the 18 Aug 08 at 12:41. Category: System. Related to: Xubuntu. New
I've run into this in Xubuntu, I can only assume (K)Ubuntu would behave the same as for obvious reasons I'm not going to test it there.

When you fill up your entire disk space and try to delete something you get an error message because since there is 0 bytes free the system cannot move files to trash. AFAIK there is no easy way around this in the GUI, so a beginner will be stuck. It would be great if in such a situation the system would offer to remove the files directly, forgoing the trash. Of course this should not be done automatically, rather a yes/no dialogue should be displayed.

PS. In case anyone wonders how can this happen - a small HDD plus the fact that Add/remove programs does not check whether the required disk space is available...

Nautilus : Drag&Drop of files on an archive should add them to it
Written by cudjoe the 1 Aug 08 at 12:24. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Nautilus file browser pane, I wish I could drag and drop files to archives **without** having to open file-roller.

(other ideas in brainstorm only mention D'n'D between a file-roller window and nautilus)

The "Get Ubuntu" page should have a link to purchase Ubuntu pre-installed on machines. It should list System76 and Dell as international providers, and then provide a localized list below that. This will encourage computer buyers to purchase computers with Ubuntu pre-installed and help those already looking for this.

At least link to the wiki page:

We switched to Daylight Savings time last night; when I started my computer this afternoon I noticed that the clock had switched to DST as well - but it would be nice if there was a small notification dropdown that reminded the user of the switch to/from DST and confirmed that the system time was still right.

That little distro from Redmond does this, and when I was still using Billware it was a useful reminder to switch the *rest* of the clocks in the house.

Shutdown
Written by vexorian the 24 Jul 08 at 14:14. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
A lot of polish needed during shutdown / log out.

Very likely event during ubuntu usage:
- You click the button in the top of the screen. Then you do restart/power off/log out. But one of your apps has a document open.

What should happen:
- The app creates a notify dialog, the app's taskbar button appears in the taskbar and begins to flash, you click the button, the application goes visible and you can click "No, I don't want to save the file that's the reason I pressed power off without handling this file first", shutdown continues.

What happens now:

- After the app creates the dialog,

Problem A:
The app's button flashes. You try to click the button, but it doesn't respond. gnome-panel has gotten unresponsive after you started the shutdown procedure. You need to guess that ALT+TAB is your only way to exit. If you do nothing, it will never shut down and gnome-panel will remain unresponsive, which will probably make your life harder.

Problem B.
The app is in another desktop. So, this time the button does not even appear in the taskbar. Good luck finding out you got an app in another desktop blocking the shutdown process . If you find out, you cannot switch to the other desktop, because... gnome-panel doesn't respond anymore. My solution to this is CTROL+ALT+BACKSPACE, I wish a new user good luck finding that out.

Conclusions:
- gnome-panel should be the last app to die during a shutdown sequence, it should wait for all other apps to be closedm then quit. It should also stay responsive. I think the gnome panel currently waits for all applications to be closed, but it doesn't allow another thread to take care of clicks passed to the panel, this is bad.

Encourage the use of more meaningful progress bars
Written by Warbo the 6 Aug 08 at 01:41. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Progress bars are a nice idea, but they become pretty meaningless when they fill up, empty, fill up again, and so on since different tasks are running. Similarly, it is difficult to use a single progress bar to cover many tasks.

A nice progress bar implementation was used on the Amiga (and probably elsewhere) where there are two progress bars, one at the top for the current task and one underneath for the total task.

It would be nice to see a GTK/QT widget made which implements thi behaviour with a simple API and GNOME and KDE encouraging its use in applications where long-running, complex things are being done (like installing, for example).

Get rid of second trash can under ~/local/share   forum
Written by JorgeBurgos the 5 Jul 08 at 14:58. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I was quite surprised to find that Thunar uses a different trash folder to Nautilus.
I found this fake trash can (or is it the real one?) to be a kind of scary and annoying. Why not just have one trash can?

This thread describes the confusion: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=516912

I also don't like how whenever I delete something on my usb drive it creates a new trash directory on the usb drive itself. I have to hop into the terminal to delete it permanently. This is annoying given that space is at a premium on a usb drive.

Running Gutsy, so sorry if these have been fixed in Hardy.

Add Desktop to Application Switcher
Written by carickw the 4 Aug 08 at 19:48. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Compiz. New
Sure, it is called "Application Switcher" in compiz, but why not add the desktop to the "list of applications." The application switcher changes the focus of the windows, so what is wrong with changing the focus to no windows at all. Because this is not an option everyone will embrace, my philosophy is make it an option. Linux has a lot of popularity because of it's level of customization, and this can just further that.

I hate to say it, but i do like how Vista's Flip3D and Alt-Tab both contain the desktop.

keyboard arrows should work on logout screen
Written by underdog512 the 1 Aug 08 at 04:25. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Gnome. New
In the Gnome environment, when loging out it seems like you have to use the mouse to select one of the log out options ie. log out, shut down, and suspend.

Users should be able to use the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate to the desired option and press enter to select the option.

This would give it a more professional feel and may be quicker and more preferable to some users.

Blacklist for malicious 3rd party repositories
Written by Thorsten Sick the 15 Jul 08 at 11:52. Category: Security. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
To solve the potential problem of malicious repositories
(repositories advertised online contain malicious packages. Users add these repositories to their source-list and get infected with the malware in these repositories/out of date repositories like the "attacks on package managers" by the university of arizona):

Add a blacklist to apt where known malicious repositories can be blocked.
The list is kept up-to-date by regular updates.
This is a fix. Not a solution.
Important: The ubuntu repositories must not be blocked (or it would lead to a update-dos)

Google Linux search plugin for firefox
Written by DRebellion the 17 Jun 08 at 19:45. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Not many people know about Google's Linux search:

http://google.com/linux

It would be very helpful if it could be packaged as a default search plugin for Firefox, much the same way as "Ubuntu Package Search".
