When not using Compiz, Ubuntu is using the Metacity window manager from GNOME.

The minimize animation in Metacity is ugly. It is very trivial and not up to par with other the animations from other operating systems which are over 10 years old.

Please improve the window animation for the Metacity window manager which is what Ubuntu uses by default.

Make so that you can perform simple math straight from Deskbar.

Such as 917-437, or 652+313 or 94/7, or 124*71.

Browsing a document in OpenOffice is not changing it
Written by azimout the 22 May 08 at 15:00. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I open a document with OpenOffice (e.g. a .ppt presentation), I browse through it and decide it's not the one I was looking for. When I close it, OpenOffice will ask me if I want to save or dismiss the changes. If you open 5-6 documents like this, it can be quite annoying...

OpenOffice should ignore the fact that I'm closing the document at a different page than the one it opened to...

Please push this idea upstream to the OOo developers...

Firefox - offer to kill firefox instead of restart the system
Written by wladston the 22 May 08 at 17:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes, when I try to open firefox, I get this error

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

I propose to change that, including a button - "Close firefox now" :

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process. [Close firefox now]

Always show "safe to remove"
Written by pi314 the 22 May 08 at 15:51. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you unmount an usb flash memory or a memory card, sometimes you can read "Device safe to remove", but sometimes nothing happens (I think that the message is only shown when it was copying).
I think it would be nice to always show "Safe to remove".

Thanks

Cheese should have a preferences dialog, and should not just assume a particular audio/video device. For instance currently i cannot record my audio with my web cam because the audio source is wrong. I can however go into "Sound Recorder" and select the proper input to record audio.

Preload next photo in F-SPOT
Written by svergeylen the 18 May 08 at 13:24. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi,

I would like to precharge the next and previous photo in F-SPOT to avoid the blurred image.

At this moment, when you browse your photos woth the "next" button, it takes nearly one second to load completely the image.

It will be a really improve if F-SPOT could pre-load 1 (or more) images to avoid this delay.

Thanks

Give user a user-picture by default and show that picture on the login window
Written by pepperpupper the 17 May 08 at 00:58. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Using the "about me" tool, it is possible to set a user-pictue for the user that is logged in. I think Ubuntu should set a random picture from one of the pre-created ones by default. This picture should then be displayed on the login-window by default. This is an easy thing to do and creates a more professional feeling of the login window.

Written by jgarrido the 9 May 08 at 21:04. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
the idea for add iso files into the synaptics is for the updates iso files created with, for example, aptoncd, it's more comfortable carriage a pendrive or SD card with iso files and more ecologic.

actually synaptics only accept CDs or DVDs but don't accept iso.

Get Java Web Start out of my Applications menu
Written by nilstycho the 4 May 08 at 01:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
After installing Java, I now have these entries in my Internet Applications menu:
-OpenJDK Java Web Start
-Sun Java 6 Web Start

I am a geek and I have no idea what these are for. I suspect very few people ever actually run these programs from the Applications menu.

Please ensure that these useless, confusing shortcuts are not installed with Java.

Automatically Unmount a USB Flash Drive when Disconnected
Written by jdennis_99 the 2 May 08 at 23:07. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
When you plug a USB Flash Drive in, Ubuntu cleverly detects and mounts it for you. Lovely. However, when you disconnect it, Ubuntu can't unmount it. It stays displayed on your desktop as a mounted drive, but can't be accessed. If you reinsert the same drive, Ubuntu mounts it under a different name.

The prevention is simple - manually unmount the drive before you physically disconnect it.

The cure is also simple - use Terminal to do a 'sudo umount' to force an unmount of the 'rogue' drive.

However, this doesn't seem particularly intuitive to me. It would be vastly preferable for Ubuntu to recognise when the drive has been disconnected, and to force the unmount itself.

Provide a simple interface for labeling partitions   forum
Written by descentspb the 3 May 08 at 13:18. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This becomes especially useful with Hardy, which gives unrecognizable names to the unnamed partitions like "100 GB media" etc. For example right-click on the partition and bring up it's options, where you can change the label.

Origami CD case
Written by davosmith the 2 May 08 at 19:42. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Just a simple idea - how about creating an origami-style CD wallet, similar to the one bundled with the OpenDisc ( http://www.theopendisc.com/latest-version/cover-art/ ), so that when burning an Ubuntu CD to give to your friends you've got something nice to put it in (even if you don't have a colour printer or a spare plastic case).

autohide should hide panel entirely
Written by rakudave the 2 May 08 at 14:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
when autohiding a panel, you still get a few pixels where the panel once was. also gconf-editing the autohidesize to zero doesn't hide the panel entirely, there is still a border visible.

I think autohidesize = 0 should not produce this pixel-border, but make the panel 'vanish' completly

Wine Windows program on Windows partition
Written by tbrminsanity the 1 May 08 at 21:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be cool if I have an existing Windows partition that Wine uses that as its "Windows Environment". That means any programs already installed in the Windows partition will be available through Wine. I could also install programs on my Windows partition with Wine (reducing the need to reboot my machine).

Make Ubuntu more efficient with screen real-estate
Written by helloothere the 1 May 08 at 23:53. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One thing that I noticed when I tried Ubuntu for the first time, coming from Windows, is that you have less space on your screen because of some certain settings. For example, window buttons are very large, menus (file, edit, view, etc) in windows are also bigger, possibly because Ubuntu uses a bigger font... I notice this the most in Firefox, where the toolbars at the top of the window take up about 1.5 times more space than the equivalent in Windows.
I would really like the Ubuntu developers to work on making toolbars, etc. take up less space and thus allow more space for the real important parts of the window, which is the content, whether that is a website you are viewing, the "sheet of paper" in a word processor, or anything else.
The reason for the larger menus in Ubuntu may be because of accessibility needs, but for the ordinary, non-disabled user, it doesn't make sense to give them less working space on their desktop.
