Remote Hosted Custom Ideatorrent (brainstorm)

The source code of Brainstorm is GPL'd as Ideatorrent. That's great! To expand the audience of Ideatorrent even further, It would be great if Ideatorrent can be remotely hosted as well.
For example Ning.com is create your own social network. An administrator would log onto ning.com to create his or her own social network, and then other users with similar interests would join that socialnetwork on a subdomian. ex: mynetwork.ning.com
pligg.com is to digg.com what Ning.com is to myspace.
This model would be excellent for Ideatorrent. Basically administrators would log into the Ideatorrent site, create their own customized brainstorm, and point users to their sub domain. i.e Mysite.ideatorrent.org
This will attract more, non-techie administrators, who don't want the hassle of setting up their own server.

When you take a screenshot of an application/window and save it as a PNG file, it should include any eventual transparency used in the window decoration, drop shadow or widgets, etc.
The PNG have an alpha channel for transparency support.
Check this screenshot for a demonstration, and notice how the transparency of the window decorations are captured in the screenshot. The checkboard pattern indicates transparency, click on the image and see how it disappears (also from the window decorations).
This is a great feature which takes advantage of the alpha channel capabilities of the PNG file format, and we should have this feature too!

Remove Rhythmbox as the default music player

Rhythmbox should be removed as the default media player in favor of something better.
Rhythmbox locks up for many people, has a large memory presence, lags when the machine is loaded, is relatively featureless, and is ugly. This idea does not suggest an alternative (another idea will have to do that), but some possible replacements are Songbird, Exaile, or Listen.

Ubuntu speed ups

There are many things that can speed up Ubuntu . Such as Gnome menu speedup , sawppiness and others that I probably havn't heard of . It would be nice to have an entry in synaptic or somewhere that would optimize Ubuntu for speed . That way it would just be a couple of clicks to get the speed that a lot of people want , but they are not experienced enough to use a terminal to get it .

A Growl equivilant for Ubuntu

For those that haven't used it, Growl is a BSD licensed notification system for OS X. It's supported by many OS X applications such as Firefox, Transmission, Adium, and much more. It provides a very customizable appearance for your notifications, and though applications must actively make use of it to do anything good.
I know there's the D-Bus messaging daemon, but few things make much use of it and it's certainly not customizable.
If it were possible to assign a preference to it much the way you can with other things in the Appearance application and it was better promoted, notifications can end up saving people a lot of alt-tabbing or jostling the mouse around.
For TL;DR, Customizable notifications and more applications taking advantage of them.

I am definitely a perfect example of what every person out there wants in a desktop, this is the reason Ubuntu should specifically implement the theme I want for default, I don't like the current theme to be the default but one with more black for selection and white for the rest.
The theme I am talking about will obviously please everyone, a lot of users go away to other OSes after noticing I don't like the default theme.

* Make Ubuntu have blue GUI, do you really think apple would have succeeded using a brown desktop?
* Make ubuntu have a glossy blue wallpaper, do you really think apple would have succeeded with animals on the wallpaper?
* Make a default dock and the top panel should have the app menus, do you really think apple would have succeeded if they made OS/X look like gnome?
* Make ubuntu work only on dell computers, do you really think apple would have succeeded if OS/X was usable on non-apple machines?
* Make ubuntu less flexible, do you really think apple would have succeeded if they made their software flexible?
* Make ubuntu closed source, do you really think apple would have succeeded if OS/X was open source?
* Make ubuntu use another kernel, do you really think apple would have succeeded if OS/X used Linux?
* Remove brainstorm, do you really think apple would have succeeded if they listened to user ideas?
In fact, the only thing you are doing correctly is cups.

Optimize ubuntu for benchmarks

It is 2008, and things like polish, power management and responsiveness are simply not as important when deciding what OS is best than one thing that has been neglected too much by ubuntu: benchmarks.
Ubuntu should always excel at benchmarks, cause everybody knows benchmarks prove the superiority of an OS. There are plenty of things that ubuntu could do to do better in benchmarks:
* Fix the scheduler: When a program is executed it is most likely going to be a benchmark batch, all other programs must be frozen until the current program ends execution, to prevent contest switches, etc, all that drawing and listening to events is really not good for benchmarks.
* Disable all sorts of power management, when somebody is not using a computer, it is most likely because he is running a benchmark, reducing the power used by devices when inactive, is likely just going to make ubuntu down perform during the benchmarks.
* Make a poll among benchmark people to select the most likely setup that would be used for a benchmark, and compile/tweak ubuntu to maximize its performance on that setup.
* Overclock the CPU and GPU by default.
* There is a very neat trick we could do, benchmarks rely on a program to measure the time stuff takes, what if the kernel would have a module that detects this program and it would modify its memory so that the program shows half the time used?
* Another smart method: For math and format encoding benchmarks, try having a lot of preprocessed files and results, no benchmark is really going to measure accuracy, so whenever a program is trying to do complicated stuff, instead of doing the whole calculation, just pick a random number which will then pick a result from the result pool, this will make ubuntu perform 8000% faster at benchmarks.

Craigslist App
----------
1 need something to have craigslist viewable in a managable window.
2 need something that will allow me to view the photos of everything.
3 auto posting would be nice, but not totally important.
4 try to make the window of the app lightweight as possible and not bloated.
5 overall handyness, use your imagination when you create this and add small features :) zip code tab / cities tab would be great!
thanks!

Add "Unlock" button to all administration tools

Several tools in the System --> Administration menu require the user to type the administrator password to start (like "Synaptic Package Manager") while others (like "Users and Groups") will launch directly and provide an "Unlock" button instead.
As far as I know, most of these "gksu tools" do not need to be started with administrator privileges to perform all their tasks. For instance, "Synaptic Package Manager" shouldn't need gksu to list the installed packages, right? (Ok, maybe they do, but that is because they are coded that way - they could be reprogrammed to use an "Unlock" button instead.)
(I am using Ubuntu 8.04.)

Better Laptop Compatibility

Not an idea
|
|
Ubuntu is one of the best Operative Systems out, no doubt. One of the most laptop friendly in my opinion too. Though there are some things I believe should be really taken into account.
1) WiFi and Touchpad buttons:
The Ath9k Driver and The Touchpad Driver worked for me right out of the box, however, and I'm not the only one with his problem, the touchpad and wifi buttons to turn on/off these devices usually don't work on ubuntu unless you do some compiling, and even then it's not guaranteed to work, Again, the devices do work, but the buttons to turn on/off don't. This is something that is stopping many laptop owners from making the full switch.
2)Loading problems:
On battery power, many times ubuntu gets stuck and takes up to 15 minutes to go on graphic mode
3) When shutting down:
Same as # 2, many times it takes up to 15 minutes to shut down.
EDIT: #2 and #3 were edited and generalized, because they were in fact (at least in my case) bugs

Ability to set up mouse buttons actions.
IMPORTANT: It's only a mockup. Probably a picture of a mouse and more human friendly dialog would be better if it will ever get implemented. So vote on functionality of the mockup not the look and feel. ;)

We're hopefully going to discuss input device configuration at UDS.

I believe it's time to start brainstorming about gnome 3. Creating a new category in our brainstorm we will have a good pool of ideas and also a profile of the ubuntu's users concerning what they are waiting for gnome 3 before the coding really get started.
Ubuntu as main dist that adopts gnome as default will get involved in this project sooner or later. So let's start contributing.

This benchmark of the Ubuntu releases says it all:

Make Ubuntu pretty and fast. In other words, perfect before you present and press on. Distinguish Ubuntu from other software by being as bug-free as possible, stable as possible, and still retain a friendly UI, like Ibex's.
PS: The Preferences Menu is getting long and ugly. Use Gnome Control Panel, but with a more SysInfo -like UI.
Great job on the new Installer (ubiquity) in Ibex. Revolutionary, as usual!

I love the new sphere feature that turns the desktop cube into a sphere in ubuntu 8.10. It amazes me how they are able to write code for something so cool yet complex. While playing with the sphere today, i thought of a wicked idea, that is to make the sphere be able to bounce while moving it. I know it may not be of much use, but i'm sure it will be able to impress many windows users and bring even more users to this excellent os. Just something fun like the fire painting.

Canonical to sell "port to Ubuntu" consulting
|
|
Written by snadrus the 31 Oct 08 at 22:39. Category: Marketing.

Ubuntu's parent company isn't "cash positive" and may leave the desktop market to build an enterprise server so it can get paid support contracts.
Instead, sell consulting
(to businesses, software vendors & governments who want to)
move their Windows desktop program (or game) to Linux/Ubuntu.
Many misunderstand the
* "Microsoft tax" they're imposing
* tools,
* paradigms,
* legalities (they don't need to open-source it),
* porting options,
* benefits of open-sourcing as an option
and buy MSDN licenses per developer.
It may also be long-term as new versions (from each side) cause changes.
Those locked in to proprietary software (Quicken & AutoCad come to mind) could then switch to Ubuntu if their software is ported.
