Make Amorak the default cd player
Written by daretoeatapeach the 20 Apr 08 at 00:58. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
...or at least include it standard in the installation.
It's just such a better player, possibly the best out there, open source or otherwise. I think it would earn us serious brownie points from people who have been using Itunes/WinMediaPlayer/Winamp.

(Please don't vote this down if you haven't used Amorak and you simply like the standard player.)

Do not set the Ubuntu CD-ROM as a Default Repository for the Synaptic
Written by Iamreck the 6 Apr 08 at 04:45. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I found it very frustrating when I first got into Ubuntu, and was looking around at the Packages to install, that I had to have the installation CD in my computer. Especially since it was a laptop and I didn't have my CD Drive in.

I eventually found out how to remove it as a repository source.

It should not be set as default, or perhaps, if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't.

Ubuntu-style Google logo on Hardy release
Written by fhucho the 1 Apr 08 at 15:18. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Google could put Ubuntu-style logo on their homepage on Hardy release day :). By the way, they use Ubuntu on their desktop computers.

Make Wine 1.0 available in Hardy (through hardy-updates). This makes it easier for some companies who depend on XP software (which already works well in wine) to make the transition to Ubuntu.

IMHO it would be nice to release wine 1.0 through hardy-updates so everyone who hasn't disabled hardy-updates will get it. The wine 1.0 branch will probably continue to receive important updates making it easier for Ubuntu to maintain.

According to Eric S. Raymond's "World Domination 201" Wine is very important for Linux to become successful on the desktop.

Why wine is so important :
http://www.winehq.org/site/why
http://catb.org/~esr/writings/world-domination/world-domination-201.html

Wine 1.0 will release on june 6th. Hardy will release on june 5th. This makes it impossible to include wine 1.0 in Hardy except through hardy-backports or hardy-updates.

More information :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyReleaseSchedule
http://wiki.winehq.org/WineReleasePlan

Developer comments
Wine 1.0 is released for Gutsy and Hardy through backports.
It will be available via update too soon on Hardy.

Don't display "lost+found" folder in nautilus
Written by jonas_lindeloev the 3 Apr 08 at 08:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I propose to hide the folder in nautilus, when not in super-user mode.

On every partition ubuntu creates a "lost+found" folder for the purpose of recovering broken files during disk-checks, which happens very rarely. Nautilus won't let you browse the folder unless you are logged in as super-user. So all in all it's pretty useless (and actually quite confusing!) to the everyday user.

Update: thanks for comments. It seems that making "lost+found" a hidden folder by default would be a good solution to this problem. Continue voting :-)

top in System Monitor
Written by drieteenmeeuw the 2 Apr 08 at 13:29. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I frequently watch the system monitor on my top panel, e.g. is my cpu busy, what about my memory, that sort of stuff. Then to check which programs are running I use top or htop in a terminal.
Would it not be nice to combine the two? When you'd hover your mouse over the cpu part of the system monitor, a pop-up would tell how much cpu is used by the different processes (obviously with a threshold or a limit of say 5 listed programs). Same for memory/swap.

Human Murine And CLearlooks Theme were removed from Hardy Beta in latest update.

The new themes were considered a improvement over the old human engine based theme but in my point of view it is difficult to compare because the difference between them is more then just color palette they use different engine .

Human theme in my point of view was a good compromise but now we have better alternative.Even if these theme can not be made default due to some political or technical reason ( still waiting for the question to be answered ) .It can still be made optional it is far better then the other theme included which are the reminiscent of the old days of gnome without cario.

Currently Ubuntu uses the "Ubuntulooks" GTK engine to draw widgets, which was forked from Clearlooks some time ago, but this engine appears to be no longer maintained

For more detail about the theme go to
http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/03/02/two-new-themes-arrive-in-ubuntu-804/
It provides nice overview of the new themes in hardy but murrine image is outdated it does not use striped menu bar and has same clean interface as clearlooks based theme.

For changes in the clearlooks based engine go to
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/gnome-2-22-review.ars/3
it gives a nice summary of the changes in clearlooks engine which will help u to know small subtle improvements which are also present in human clearlooks theme

The Avant-Window-Manager is now on the repositories, but it's extras applets are not. AWN is not too much useful without them.

to use them we must download the sources and compile.

Sound to have VU meter or visual indication to show mic in is working.
Written by captainpugwash the 28 Mar 08 at 16:02. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It drives me insane trying to diagnose if my sound card Microphone input is working correctly.

it would be great if I could have some kind of visual feed back like the old "VU" meters we used to have on old fashioned tape decks.

Getting skype to work or dealing with any "sound in" / "mic in" issues on Ubuntu has been a nightmare to trouble shoot. this would make it a bit easier.

Main menu (GNOME) should open faster the first time it is clicked.
Written by NachoBlanco the 28 Mar 08 at 17:46. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It takes around 2-3 seconds in a modern PC to open (GNOME). I supouse it is because it is loaded the first time it is clicked, but it should be loaded before in order not to need to wait.

Ubuntu should ignore all negative votes to my ideas
Written by vexorian the 28 Mar 08 at 05:49. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The reason I am being downvoted is definitely related to people not deciding the vote correctly, because they focus on aspects of my suggestions that are not the priority. This is the reason Ubuntu ought to ignore all the negative votes I am getting since it is obvious that people are downvoting me for the wrong reason.

Please think of me while designing Ubuntu
Written by vexorian the 28 Mar 08 at 05:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I am definitely a perfect example of what every person out there wants in a desktop, this is the reason Ubuntu should specifically implement the theme I want for default, I don't like the current theme to be the default but one with more black for selection and white for the rest.

The theme I am talking about will obviously please everyone, a lot of users go away to other OSes after noticing I don't like the default theme.

BrainStorm - no negative points at all - much simpler is Vote or Not Vote
Written by SorinN the 28 Mar 08 at 07:59. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
why negative points and a lot of energy spent on the wrong system + frustrations for the undocumented, just .

Negative vote just add an unhappy degree of complications - also for a good idea someone can vote negative just without good arguments even without read this idea ...just see the title, so this is a bad criteria.

A correct system should put a single button > VOTE THIS IDEA.

Don't like, don't vote. Clean & clear.

So the total are made from pure Votes.
You don't like - you don't vote, no more time spent on the Universe, no more frustrations or flames.

Make file icons a little transparent while drag-n-dropping

(this idea was finally implemented in Hardy using compiz fusion, so if you are a mod, please mark the idea as "Done")

When user drags a file or folder, make it a little bit transparent to help visualize where it's being dropped at.

better boot splash/usplash background
Written by oliviacond the 25 Mar 08 at 08:37. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
ubuntu usplash background is very dull, just dark black.
Why not make it brown or any other suitable color?

Take a look on Fedora and OpenSUSE

I love PDFs due to their computability with other OSs. It would be great if selecting text in the document viewer worked more effectively. I am always reading research papers that have multiple columns and when I try to select text it goes all crazy and selects entire columns or does not realize there is a column at all and continues selecting text until the end of the row.

Also, sometimes when I select text to copy it to another location, 8s turn into boxes or Ns turn into Rs. Some weird stuff happens.

I love how there is the ability to select text, but to make it truly useful these things should be implemented.

Lastly, if the default "Print to file" was PDF instead of PS (PostScript), I think more people would find it useful.

Make Update Manager mention version of package
Written by Eldmannen the 26 Mar 08 at 15:42. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I use "Update Manager" to update the packages of my system, it mentions the name of the package and the size of the package.

But it does not mention the version of the package.

I want it to mention the version the package that is about to get installed.
