When I boot up, the gnome menu should load up by default. I have to wait 2-3 seconds after clicking the menu icon for it to load. This load should have already been done, as the first thing many people do once booting up is to run a program via the menu. It is the little polishes like this that make Ubuntu such a great operating system.
(Note: This affects the Gnome Menu applet. I'm not sure if it affects the Menu Bar applet.)

Hi all,
Power settings can turn off the screen for saving energy and turn it on when mouse is moved or a mouse/keyboard button is pressed.
Why don't disable screen saver when power settings turn off the screen? it would make ubuntu more "green" because it won't use the CPu or the GPU for processing drawing for the screensaver.
As always comments are accepted

Option to setup eBox during Ubuntu server installation

The Ubuntu server should offer to install and configure the eBox (Remote web administration interface which Canonical seems to be pushing over Webmin) during installation, as it ensures that people can have a remote admin tool from install, without needing to apt it (so they are more aware it exists). And, by making it an option, users who are setting up an internet server which is exposed over the net by default, as opposed to a lan server, still have a high level of security.
First impressions for users always count, and reducing the knowledge requirements of APT and linux by making the installation of a GUI configuration tool knowledge-less, we make it easier for users to have a quick play of the server edition.
eBox is a web management tool for linux. http://ebox-platform.com/

Don't Pause File Operations and Installations for User Input

When moving/copying/deleting a lot of files, or installing a lot of packages, you often have to say if you want to replace a few files, or have to agree to a license for certain packages. When you have to do that, the rest of the operation or installation waits. Instead, other files should continue to be copied, and other packages should be installed while it waits for the user input. That way if you are say, copying 20 GBs across a slow network, you can leave for several hours and have 80% of the copying done instead of it sitting at 30% asking if you want to merge a folder.

Clean up xsane gui

The xsane frontend is the most feature-complete gui scanning program, but the interface is complicated and difficult to use.
There are a ton of buttons for adjusting contrast and gamma and resolution etc. that most users don't need. And there's the histogram window, which is just plain confusing
Would it be possible for a simplified version of it to be made with the more complex options visible only under an advanced tab? Just do something to make it less scary-looking.

Ubuntu and GNU/Linux ads competition

I think that Linux is ready for the masses already and that one of the biggest things that are holding it back is that nobody knows about it. The other problem is that people aren't aware of foss(free and open source software). I think that firefox has been really successful in their promotion department. May be we should borrow from them and create something like this http://www.firefoxflicks.com/
and do a contest for the best fan created ad. I think that a lot of great quality ads for Ubuntu and Linux could come out of this.

Add 'Do not Update This' option to Update Manager
|

This issue is something I face regularly and thats why I'm posting it here.
I want a right click option on the updates in Update Manager which allows me to lock the version of a software and not update it. I know this functionality exists somewhere in Synaptic Package Manager, but still it would be convenient.
Example:
I have nvidia card on desktop and there was an intel video driver update recently, so it came up in Update Manager. I didn't want to install it obviously, so I unchecked it. But still every time I boot up, it shows new updates are available, and I see only that intel driver. If I get a 'do not update option' it would be handy.
Thanks

H.264 Decoder with SMP Support up to 4 Cores

In Windows, we have CoreAVC that has this support. But linux doesn't have this yet, which makes it impossible to watch 1080p h.264 content back without the video being jerky due to one core not being able to handle the decoding.
I know Ubuntu uses ffmpeg to do the decoding of h.264 video, but that needs SMP support to compete against Windows and its CoreAVC h.264 decoder. This is something I think MythTV can use too.

Support installing and upgrading on diskless workstations

I run Ubuntu on a diskless workstation with PXE boot and NFS from a server. I had to set up this manually along the description here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DisklessUbuntuHowto
It works fine except that I cannot do a normal distribution-upgrade. Attempting to do a distribution upgrade with update-manager results in a damaged system which fails to boot.
It would be nice if the Ubuntu installer had direct support for this, i.e. to install onto a NFS share on a server for PXE booting. And the update-manager should support doing distribution-upgrades.

Create a really good DVD Authoring Application

There is no good DVD Authoring software available for the GNOME Desktop. Something easy to use but still powerful. See Apple's iDVD as an good example.
http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/
The app should provide a good media integration of other GNOME applications like F-Spot for Photo selecting or Banshee/Rhythmbox for songs selections, etc.

Don't allow multiple instances of update manager, package manager etc

Sometimes when I click the little notification icon for the update manager it takes a while for the app to launch. Not sure whether I actually clicked the icon I click it again. This usually leads to that I have something like 2 - 3 instances of the update manager running.
From a user point of view It would be better if Ubuntu disallowed multiple instances of the update manager and other apps where there is absolutely no need to have more than one instance running. The same goes for add/remove and others.

Sometimes you have files in your trash that you cannot empty. (rights problem)
If a file ends in the user trash, this user must be able to empty it.
For example, If you copy files from a DVD, or a external HD, sometimes the file appear with a lock icon, you can delete it, but you can't empty the trash.

Better bluetooth support

Bluetooth support is still a mixed bag in ubuntu. Ubuntu needs to do a better job of making sure bluetooth devices work with the operating system. Headsets are still an arcane science and Nautilus still can't browse a BT device.

Right now, the most likely successful migrations to Ubuntu happen for *nix experts and total novices who have someone install Ubuntu for them, but the most likely people to try Ubuntu are Windows power users--those who like a lot of configuration options but who are also used to using the GUI for tweaking options and not manually editing a text configuration file.
The most popular requests for editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file involve changing the default boot option (to Windows instead of Ubuntu) and changing the timeout before a boot option is selected. The other less popular ones would be just bonus features, I guess.

Better UVC drivers

In the effort to get better webcam drivers overall focus should be made specifically on the UVC project.
This would be more effective because all new webcams that want a "wors with vist@" logo have to use the UVC driver.
This is actually a good thing though since UVC is a non proprietary standard way of communicating with things like USB web cams.
Their community though needs more support and who better than an OS directly benefiting from their work?

Display message informing user about going into and coming out of Hibernation

When booting up or shutting down, Ubuntu by default shows nothing but a progress bar. If the "quiet" option is removed from grub/menu.lst (which I always recommend doing), then you get a nice scrolled list of what it is doing.
In both cases, no message is shown to inform the user that the machine is going into or coming out of hibernation. The progress bar also does not move during this time.
This gives the impression that the machine has hanged, and more than once i've had non-technical people press reset because they thought the machine had hanged.
In non-quiet mode the, a message should be included that says "going into / resuming from hibernation". And the progress bar should also change incrementally during the process.

Auto-Hide Print Icon

The new Gnome print icon in the notification area is nice, but it remains there after you are done printing. You need to manually right-click it and tell it to hide.
There should be an option to have it hide automatically when printing is done. It doesn't need to be enabled by default, but the option should exist.
