For usability reasons I propose that we attach a Ubuntu logo icon to the disk icon for the system partition.

Check my mockup of before and after.

Include new GNOME 2.24 wallpapers
Written by kizza the 23 Nov 08 at 06:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The new version on GNOME in 8.10 has some nice desktop wallpaper images:
http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.24/#rnusers.backgrounds

In the alpha versions of 8.10 these were included, but have been removed for the final release.

My idea is simple - keep the nice Ubuntu style wallpapers coming, but don't delete these ones that come for free!

Include screenshots in Add/Remove programs via screenshots.debian.net
Written by Jay_Bee the 19 Nov 08 at 19:53. Category: Usability. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
There is a newly launched website that shows screenshots of programs packaged in Debian.
http://screenshots.debian.net

Note it says:
Michael Vogt has added support into synaptic.

I hope to see it included in Jaunty!

But since most newbies use Add/Remove programs it would be useful to include the screenshot support there as well.

Jaunty aims at merging the web and the desktop, it should include automatic downloads of screenshots from this site in the Add/Remove application, so that users can see what an application looks like before they decide whether to install it or not.

Don't show quick unmount button in Nautilus when the user doesn't have the rights to unmount the partition/disc.
Right know I don't know why the button is visible if I can't use it?

I just know that google put video voice capability to the gtalk. Please hurry to port it to the pidgin. It would be one more option (wide used) of video and voice chat for we use with our friends no linux users.

sorry for my English

Written by thuban the 6 Jun 08 at 16:07. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
every files .gp3 or gp5 (and many other) don't have any icon. I think if whe open these files with tuxguitar (as an example), these files should have a tuxguitar icon then, or one who make then different to config files.

(really sorry for my poor english...)

Improving QCad-Autocad compatibility
Written by Luca_Stornaiuolo the 20 Apr 08 at 20:27. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's not possible to open .dwg files in an opensource CAD software like QCaD; I know it is a non-free format, but .doc is not too and OO.org reads it.
This not allows the Public Administration offices which works in city planning and management to migrate to Linux.
Actually, in this sector we completely are dipendent by Autodesk and Microsoft. I think it may be a great project to develop.

Professional software
Written by Eldmannen the 31 May 08 at 17:05. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to see more high-quality professional software.
I think we need some real high-quality professional killer-apps, that has quality like Firefox, Blender, and OpenOffice.
Not someones buggy toy project which lacks features.

Ubuntu is great, but I think there might be a lack of some professional software.

I would like to see great professional software for;
* Electronic design automation (EDA)
* Computer-aided design (CAD)
* Computer-aided engineering (CAE)
* Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)
* Finite element analysis
* Audio/music production
* Video editing
* Mathematics
* Technical computing
* Floorplans

Things that can rival MATLAB, AutoCAD, Microsoft Visio, Sony Vegas Pro, etc.

We need more professional killer-apps!
Stuff for engineers, scientists, producers, artists, etc.

Create a CAD software - full OpenSource
Written by steco the 12 Mar 08 at 22:01. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are a lot of applications which try to bring a good mechanical CAD to Linux. Most oft them are not really useful:
- only a part of the software is OpenSource (Q-Cad)
- to simpel
- not ready to use
- ...

Create a full blown CAD software as OpenSource to Ubuntu 2D and 3D.
This should open the usage of Ubuntu in the industry, at universities and break the monopol of AutoCad.

Move bluetooth into network manager
Written by nelson.blaha the 28 Oct 08 at 15:47. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Network Manager. New
Networking is networking. I think this is a logical way for users to regard bluetooth, especially considering that it's so often used to communicate with a phone. Also, then there's no more fuss about whether or not the bluetooth icon is displayed.

Now the searchbar in Synaptic looks kinda messy and out-of-place.

Move the searchbar in Synaptic to the right, just like it is located in Mozilla Firefox and many other applications.

So that the user finds and expects it in the same location. This will increase usability and ease-of-use, and make things feel more consistent.
It will also look much prettier and well thought-out.

OpenOffice 3.0 by default in Intrepid 8.10
Written by vitorgatti the 15 Oct 08 at 19:04. Category: Office. Related to: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. Won't implement
I think this would be great for everybody, because OpenOffice 3.0 has A LOT of improvements that will help people that uses this kind of program constantly to migrate from MS Office to OpenOffice.
Support for MS Office 2007 documents and PDF editing are two good examples.

I know that Intrepid will be released in 15 days, but I think there aren't going to be a lot of crazy bugs to be fixed in "only" 15 days by developers if this program gets upgraded in Ubuntu repositories!

Think about that and let's do this now, instead of waiting more six months (Ubuntu 9.04) just to get this great program by default... you know, if more good programs comes by default, more the newbies and veterans will like!

Developer comments
Unfortunately, since the final release of OpenOffice 3 was delayed, there was not enough testing time to include it by default in Intrepid.
OpenOffice 3.0.1, to be released on Dec. 2, is a bugfix only release and should prove to be much more stable than the current release. This release will be available on the backport repository.

software updates in update manager must be organized in a tree
Written by slsolaris the 8 Oct 08 at 03:24. Category: System. Related to: Update manager. New
in a tree becouse we'll know what to update:

1. for example:

>compiz
---compiz-core
---compiz-plugin
---compiz-gnome
>evolution
---evolution-data-center
---evolution-webcal
---evolution-plugin
>firefox
---firefox-3.0
---firefox-3.0-gnome-support
>security updates
---kernel

2. update manager should ask to confirm changes that also affect other programs

3. confirm recommended packages as dependencies like in synaptic package manager.

Update manager should be more intelligent in general!

Compizconfig-settings-manager installed by default
Written by Fixman the 9 Oct 08 at 03:56. Category: Graphics. Related to: Compiz Advanced Settings (ccsm). New
Compiz Fusion is a great application, and most effects look awesome. However, it runs to 5% its capacity without compizconfig-settings-manager installed (unless you know how to configure it manually, thought that can be a pain in the ass). Thats why I think ccsm should be installed by default on Ubuntu for easier using of "other" plugins by new users.

EDIT: If you want simple-ccsm to be installed by default promote this idea, since they are pretty similar.
EDIT2: No, this will not make Ubuntu slower. Compiz Fusion is already installed by default since Gutsy, all I want is the configuration tool for Compiz (a very little app) to be installed. All what ccsm (or sccsm) does is to change configuration files.

Upgrade to Mono 2.0
Written by nvivo the 7 Oct 08 at 11:34. Category: System. Related to: MonoDevelop. Not an idea
Mono 2.0 is out, but Intrepid is about to be released with 1.9.1. There are many new and long awaited features on 2.0, including support for almost everything from .NET 2.0 and LINQ support. It would be good if we could base the new version on this release.

Developer comments
This will not happen for intrepid.

There is a possibility that it will make it into backports, though.

I propose to creation of a theme for Wine that emulates the Human GTK look of Ubuntu.

This would make running Windows applications under Wine feel more integrated as they would look, feel and behave more like other applications in Ubuntu.

I don't necessarily propose this to be by default, but to be an option available in "Wine configuration" -> "Desktop integration" -> "Theme".
