Make Ubuntu more polished visually
Written by ilembitov the 3 Jul 08 at 08:43. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
An OS, no matter how technologically or ideologically advanced it is, should also be visually appealing.
And Ubuntu, being one of the most beatiful (I mean the default appearance here) distribution of Linux still can't compete with Vista (not to mention Mac OS X).
Here I imly the following:
-icons. All the icons should be converted into vector graphics, so that they were scalable (so that they could look the same everywhere).
-fonts. Even Liberation fonts look better than default GNOME's dejavu, but still they leave much to be desired.
-screensaver. Currently, it's just a black screen. Enough said, I guess. Ubuntu should offer aset of nice screensavers, basic, or OpenGL-driven.
-applets. GNOME applets should grow in numbers and functionality. At least I would suggest a wrapper that could display a Web widget as an applet, so that user could simply paste BB-codes from YouTube, Jaiku, Vimeo or else and see it on his desktop.
-3D effects. There shouldn't be a vast number of them, but all of them should be quality-driven. Just look how bad is Compiz rendering as you make anything that drives windows borders into curves - they are edgy and twisted.
-wallpapers. I know, Deviantart contest is on, but here is also another point: Ubuntu should provide numerous wallpapers out-of-box, and all of them should suit the default colour scheme. The same stays for login screen.
-themes. Ubuntu should provide themes that change the appearance more globally. Not only GNOME's appearance, but all the apps, bootloader, login screen, screensaver.
-customization. Changing Ubuntu's appearance isn't really easy these days, since you can't tune up all the aspects in one place. I mean, you can change the theme, but you should work really hard to make your style as sole as the defaut one - Qt, GTK and other (wxWindows, etc) applications share different configs. Just try to switch to a darker theme and you'll learn how many elements would require tuning. Ubuntu can offer great means of customization, but that doesn' mean that an average user is able to make a cool-looking style.
-bootloader. That was already mentioned, but still. Ubuntu should show text mode at all. Currently, it can occasionally fall back to console for a while, which is discomforting.
-hibernation/suspend screen. The same.

Ensure Canonical comes across as professional at all times
Written by belovedmonster the 10 Jul 08 at 15:32. Category: Marketing. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
I just read the blog post about the new boxed retail version of Ubuntu available and this image was used to show the box art.

http://blog.canonical.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/bestbuy.jpg

Sorry, but since when did a professional company with millions of users just dump a lame ass blurry picture like this into an official press release/blog post?

Shuttleworth talks about aspiring to be as good as OS X. Do you think Apple would have a blurry snap shot of Leopards box art in a press release? Man it bugs me so much that you guys don’t take this stuff seriously. IMAGE IS EVERYTHING when attracting new users.

I love what you guys do, but you need to pull the finger out and realise that you’ve got to look professional at all times. Canonical come across as a half arsed amateur operation far too often.

You need to make sure that every document, press release, blog post, and piece of information that comes out of Canonical looks professional at all times, otherwise you need someone to say "No way is that going out in its present state. Fix it!".

Desktop Double-Click should enable a launcher
Written by avguleas the 1 Jul 08 at 12:10. Category: Others. Related to: Gnome. New
Nothing is done now if a user double-clicks the desktop.

Why not give the user the ability to launch an application of his choice( f.i a file/web browser, mp3 player, terminal etc) or trigger an action(f.i. show desktop(Idea #7020), logout panel etc )???

Users should have the ability to enable/disable this feature, but this feature should be disabled by default.

Usability is inversely proportional to the number of USER clicks for the desired
Written by known the 1 Jul 08 at 21:11. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

How many mouse clicks you need to find out the CPU type of your laptop?
In XP it is 3
In Ubuntu it is 4

You will find a rational and coherent discussion on this topic at http://digg.com/microsoft/Why_I_Still_Use_Windows_Despite_the_Peer_Pressure?t=1 6396532#c16404645

I request Ubuntu team to prioritize the USER desired features and Profile the number of mouse clicks required for those features.

Indicate an additional metric for quality of the brainstorm idea.
Written by braaivleis the 1 Jul 08 at 11:59. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since some ideas don't always fit most people's interests, vote counts could be low on certain "good" ideas, even if there were no negative votes.

I suggest that an additional metric in the form of (Effective Vote Metric)/(Total Votes) should be shown.

(Where, "Effective Vote Metric" = the number that is currently shown and
"Total Votes" = the addition of the positive vote count AND the absolute value of the negative vote count.

This type of metric will be useful to show the ideas where most votes where positive and very few where negative (which could lead to it being considered as a "good" idea).

Written by everlasting.puneet the 29 Jun 08 at 19:19. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
though gnome menu editor is really good .. but if there were some more featurs it would be more benificial ..
more features like ..
1) Remove item.(this can remove selected item from the list permanently )
2) Add a new bar .. (this will add a new bar like Application, places, system)
3) change menu icon (it can be changed explicitly)

gnome panel icones should support png too for their custom application launcher
Written by everlasting.puneet the 27 Jun 08 at 20:22. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome panel has this problem its not a bug though but panel custom application launcher only supports svg files. and svg files can not be made with gimp or any other tool so i think Gnome panel should also support png files for their custom application launcher. and it should be noted that nautilus custom application launcher which is made on desktop can use png files as well so i think this can be done easily.with the gnome panel

GUI for every thing
Written by everlasting.puneet the 25 Jun 08 at 14:51. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
we have gui of almost every thing you click on configure-blahblah and it starts but still when you have to go to terminal and type there : sudo reconfigure-blahblah
or editing /etc/fstab
or even changing grub's menu.list or even installing fress grub on a broken one ... all needs that damn terminal ..
and remember this every one is not a geek who learns every command ..
things should be made easy .. more and more easy
gui for configuring /etc/fstab menu.list
and there should be some application which can make things correct I am talking about GUI for general errors and configuration
we have one called "tune up utilities" for windows we can have one like this here too which can perform small but tedious tasks easily .
a tool like this can be handy where you can clean up waste in cache.
by which you can reconfigure gdm
you can mount drives and can reconfigure fstab all files like this without much knowledge ..
i would love to have an application like this

brainstrom should check relevancy on showing duplicate while submitting new idea
Written by everlasting.puneet the 20 Jun 08 at 13:01. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
SEE this before reading further

http://bp2.blogger.com/_RGgXhkqej5c/SFupVg3X7GI/AAAAAAAABDA/4sOMr5w-btE/s1600-h /Screenshot-1.png

do you see any relevancy in this picture you can not judge the idea you have posted is a duplicate or not ...
this feature should be improved and should give more relevant results.

with a beta version ubuntu should also include a stable version of firefox
Written by everlasting.puneet the 20 Jun 08 at 21:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
with hardy we were the first one to taste firefox 3-beta-5
but i think with this experimental firefox version there should be a stable version of firefox from now on , i mean with next releases with any of the beta product shipped it should also have a stable release with it which will be more benificial for users in case of crash of beta version .

fully installable package ..
Written by everlasting.puneet the 16 Jun 08 at 20:09. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
today on some forum i got a question that a person don't have broadband and he is a novice and wants to install some softwares and codecs now the problem is on packages.ubuntu.com he gets each package with all dependencies but still it becomes very uneasy task for him to take all dependencies home from near by cyber cafe so ... if there may be some additional reposatory for fully installable packages which don't need any further dependencies to satisfy.
or may be the current status of one's computers installed packages can be uploaded and then depending upon it site automatically tells me what are the packages i need to satisfy dependencies and all the dependencies can be downloaded as a single zip file that would be more easier for people not having internet at their home..

take a look at this
http://nonetdebs.unixpod.com/
Ubuntu should also include this type of feature

instead of gdebi
Written by everlasting.puneet the 14 Jun 08 at 20:06. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
instead of gdebi pakage installer ..
.deb files should use some glade files inside or and file to have an interface, and as soon as the deb file is clicked the backend of gdebi should run and and the interface in the front and the interface should be given only minimal information about the installation and stress should be given on features.. this not only will make installation appealing and user friendly but also gives user more clear picture of the software while looking through its features.
