There are lot of people having troubles syncing their devices (pda, smartphones, etc.) with ubuntu. At this poing there is only one solution available, multisync, and works for only a few devices, and it's very limited on their functions.

And I think, this is a very important point for lots of people.

**Suggestions from duplicate idea 397 work on that idea :

1) Clean up the Opensync and SyncML plugin packages to work properly with Evolution by default.

2) Set up an official Ubuntu SyncML server for Ubuntu users.

3) Possibly clean up open source SyncML clients for the different mobile platforms.

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

More support for more wireless chipsets out of the box and "Windows style" ease of set up.

I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!

Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

An OS, no matter how technologically or ideologically advanced it is, should also be visually appealing.
And Ubuntu, being one of the most beatiful (I mean the default appearance here) distribution of Linux still can't compete with Vista (not to mention Mac OS X).
Here I imly the following:
-icons. All the icons should be converted into vector graphics, so that they were scalable (so that they could look the same everywhere).
-fonts. Even Liberation fonts look better than default GNOME's dejavu, but still they leave much to be desired.
-screensaver. Currently, it's just a black screen. Enough said, I guess. Ubuntu should offer aset of nice screensavers, basic, or OpenGL-driven.
-applets. GNOME applets should grow in numbers and functionality. At least I would suggest a wrapper that could display a Web widget as an applet, so that user could simply paste BB-codes from YouTube, Jaiku, Vimeo or else and see it on his desktop.
-3D effects. There shouldn't be a vast number of them, but all of them should be quality-driven. Just look how bad is Compiz rendering as you make anything that drives windows borders into curves - they are edgy and twisted.
-wallpapers. I know, Deviantart contest is on, but here is also another point: Ubuntu should provide numerous wallpapers out-of-box, and all of them should suit the default colour scheme. The same stays for login screen.
-themes. Ubuntu should provide themes that change the appearance more globally. Not only GNOME's appearance, but all the apps, bootloader, login screen, screensaver.
-customization. Changing Ubuntu's appearance isn't really easy these days, since you can't tune up all the aspects in one place. I mean, you can change the theme, but you should work really hard to make your style as sole as the defaut one - Qt, GTK and other (wxWindows, etc) applications share different configs. Just try to switch to a darker theme and you'll learn how many elements would require tuning. Ubuntu can offer great means of customization, but that doesn' mean that an average user is able to make a cool-looking style.
-bootloader. That was already mentioned, but still. Ubuntu should show text mode at all. Currently, it can occasionally fall back to console for a while, which is discomforting.
-hibernation/suspend screen. The same.

One of the things included in Hardy was ufw (Uncomplicated firewall wall), but everything has to be done via CLI. There is a very nice GUI frontend being developed for it and it would be nice if it is bundled as a default package.

Actually that is the feature that I'm missing more in Ubuntu. To be able to preview the content of the documents is very usefull for those who use OpenOffice.org.

I maintain Thunar-thumbnailers (http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/thunar-plugins/thunar-thumbnailers) for the Thunar file manager. Thunar uses a very simple system to register new thumbnailers with the file manager, this is described: http://thunar.xfce.org/documentation/C/customizing-thunar.html#thumbnailers

A lot of brainstorm ideas mention the speed problems in Nautilus, particularly about thumbnail generation. There are some asking for more formats to be thumbnailed (such as OpenDocument). A lot of this has already been done in Thunar-thumbnailers: look for example at the supported formats on the link I posted.

Also, Nautilus is very very slow at generating thumbnails of JPEG images, because it reads the whole image and scales it down. Thunar just extracts the digital camera's thumbnail from the image and uses that.

An example of this speed difference is (benchmarked on an Intel core 2 duo), per thumbnail:
nautilus took about 2-3 seconds,
thunar did the whole directory faster than I could blink (it you want a number it's less than 1ms per thumbnail).

I think if everyone used and contributed to the same set of thumbnailers, a lot of effort would be saved and quality would improve.

It would be great to be able to use Thunar (without using a hack) under Gnome instead of Nautilus.

There are many different ways to open and save a file. Choice is great, but only if you can control it easily enough. I open four different programs (vlc, krusader, gedit, and thunderbird) and each of them acts differently to open a file.

What should be provided is a manager that is consistent across the system.

*It should be dynamic enough to work with all applications.
*It should allow mass customization
#Use a certain configuration for a certain app
#Use a certain application for a certain file for all programs
#Customized to current file opening schemes
#Default back to the current file opening scheme for those who don't want the changes

This will decrease the confusion of using many different managers.

This might also tie into a consolidated section for preferred applications.

Here are some current examples:

Opening an attachment with thunderbird gives you the option to:
1. Open with a specific application(s)
2. Choose an application to open with (which then pops up with the manager for gedit (thunar?).

Suppose I want to open a csv file. Opening defaults to oo spreadsheet. But if I want to open with gnumeric I have to open usr> bin and wait for bin to populate (takes 20 or so seconds, which is way too long) and then choose gnumeric.

Now I choose gnumeric to be my default app for opening csv files by checking a box, but that seems to get over-rided from time to time.

Nautilus is curently very slow especially when opening folders containing many files and sub-folders.

It takes 10 seconds for example to display /usr/bin directory with Athlon XP 2500+ CPU and 512 MB RAM machine. Thunar does the action with no lag on the same configuration.

Drag&Drop is such a intuitive and simple action - it must be promoted.
There are many things that already work in Ubuntu/GNOME/KDE with Drag&Drop, but there is much that can be improved:

- DnD an image from Firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not a textfile with the link to the homepage.
- DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the Firefox address bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
- DnD of devices onto the Pastebin should unmount them (like OSX)
- DnD of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
- fix the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesn't-accept-DnD-files issue: Launchpad bug #61237
- DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
- DnD a file into an edit box should insert a file:// link - KDE has this; Idea #3027

Make a template competition for OpenOffice.org

We should have a competition where our most skilled artists, the deviantART community and everybody can submit their templates for OpenOffice.org.

We could get some real professional-looking templates.

Then we have a voting or panel who picks out the best contributions for inclusion.

This will be fun, involve the community and get us some really great templates.

Warn users if they try to use a weak password. In the style of google account creation.

I originally thought that this would be good for the users login password. However, possibly this could be implemented for all passwords system wide.

Auto rotate images (lossless :-)), when importing photo's, based on the the EXIF information.

I want regular updates of the lastest versions of the applications should be in the Ubuntu backports repositories.

I know is for the security of the system, but i want for example: new drivers updates, VLC, VirtualBox-OSE, rtorrent, alien, and others applications which long time ago are with last stables versions and in the repositories always are the old versions of them; besides some applications launch its latest version for bugfixing security vulnerabilities and giving more stability of the system

We have dual-core, and quad-core processors now, how much are we taking advantage of this additional power. Also we could provide better development tools to take advantage of multi-core processors.

OSS should lead the way in parallel processing, not just playing catch-up. We still don't even take advantage of the fact that most modern processors are now 32/64 hybrid. OS X can run 32/64/PPC(Rosetta) architecture all on the same box. Yes it is difficult, but a discussion should be started on what kind of work could be done in this area.
