Modify default shortcuts during installation based on the user's previous OS
Written by kaens the 23 Jul 08 at 19:04. Category: Installation. Related to: Live CD installer. New
I've seen quite a few ideas on here about changing / implementing different shortcuts that are more in line with different OS's paradigms (OSX, etc).

I'm not sure how hard this would be to implement (I'm not familiar with how Gnome's configuration is set - if everything is settable programmaticaly, it shouldn't be too hard), but it seems to me that a good solution would be to ask the user during installation whether they are a first-time linux user, and if so what OS they were using previously, and to modify keyboard and mouse shortcuts accordingly.

I'm assuming that this could be done for keyboard shortcuts for the desktop environment, and probably for mouse behaviour as well. Other OS-specific features (like drag a cd into the trash to unmount it) would probably be more of a hassle to implement.

Add some sort of notification on first run telling the user about this, and how to modify the settings - plus maybe alert them to some helpful features they might not have had before (for instance, if someone was coming from Windows, they probably wouldn't know about middle-mouse cut and paste).

Multiple installations at the same time
Written by nico9julio the 23 Jul 08 at 18:57. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
It would be nice if could make more than one installation (instances of apt) at same time.

Let expose a chase:
Let's suppose that we are updating the system and wanting to install an application as HTOP. We cannot do it, we will have to wait to that the update program stops downloading everything and then installing it, or to abort the update.

Since we are speaking about a packages system like APT, we know in advance the dependences for every package we are trying to install or update, because of it we would have to be able to install something if it does not interfere with the instalations in course.

Make the Documentation optional
Written by grigio the 23 Jul 08 at 21:18. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Documentation is often minimal, difficult to understead and outdated.
So nobody reads it and googling became the unique tool to find out how to fix a problem.
Please don't install it by default

Linux needs to be more like Windows/OS X
Written by spyyder the 24 Jul 08 at 03:07. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
***Please read before you vote down, I know that may be difficult for some of you Microsoft/Apple hating fanatics.

***I would like to thank those of you who bothered to provide reasonable feedback even if you down-voted. See, its not that hard!

That's right ladies and gentlemen, the first step at offering usability is to offer compatibility. Bring an end to this antiquated ideology that Linux is somehow "different", because its not. Shuttleworth challenges us that in two years Ubuntu will surpass Apple in usability. How exactly is that supposed to happen if every upcoming release brings nothing new to the table. Why aren't the developers willing to try something NEW, RADICAL, and SPONTANEOUS???

Tools like GTK are not good enough anymore. Why cling to the design fundamentals of projects not willing to change their interface approach. Linux in reality is either gnome or kde. No distro wants to evolve beyond that. I once suggested an idea to fork Gnome, but that was too radical for you. I suggested that Ubuntu publish human interface guidelines, but that wasn't good enough. One of the top ideas is to hold a contest at DeviantArt, and that was brushed to the side after 4 months. (Its in the 'work in progress' but still ignored, read the dev comments!) Seriously, the Gnome, Openoffice, and Ubuntu developers have the aesthetic sensibilities of a cinder blog.

Update: Not trying to troll, just a wake-up call. Based on the voting I see you guys aren't interested in making a good OS. What linux is today: Theme + Some Program's + Package System, all bundles into a downloadable.iso. WTF? Where is the innovation in that?? Every three months a new distro, for what purpose, all of them useless. You're right, linux is about choice, the choice to suck, be incompatible, be difficult to use, and just plain frustrating. But go ahead and keep submitting those ideas mates, because may be in 10-15 years, Ubuntu will have caught up to the rest of the world.

You want ideas? HERE!
Why no integration between openoffice and firefox/thunderbird?
Why such poor enterprise support?
Why no unified short-cuts?

Don't copy folders to Home/Pictures on inport in F-Spot

F-Spot should not copy images to the home directory when we import them. It should work directly on the original image

Open an Ubuntu - information centre in the Netherlands
Written by Udenbuntu the 24 Jul 08 at 15:03. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Why not open an Ubuntu information Centre in the Netherlands to demonstrate the power of Ubuntu to dutch computer users, to help them with the use of Ubuntu and how to make the switch from Windows to Ubuntu.

Yours faithfully,

Udenbuntu

Offer 2 Desktops Layouts on first boot.
Written by retj the 24 Jul 08 at 15:48. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is a subject well discussed on forums if ubuntu should use 1 or 2 panels as a default desktop layout.

So, what happens if on first boot the user is given an option to select which one is about to use.

1.- Standard Top-Bottom panel with Applications/Places/System menu.
Screenshot:

2.- Single-Bottom Panel with gnome main menu and gnome control center.

This is a concept that would help user to learn Ubuntu easily, using what user is familiar with.

Remove Evolution from regular installation
Written by jakeg the 6 Mar 08 at 20:41. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I don't use Evolution and like the majority of people (especially 'normal' users) have no use for it at all. Yet it comes installed by default and even has one of only a few icons on the taskbar. I tried to uninstall it with 'aptitude uninstall evolutin' or something similar and it would have uninstalled loads of other stuff as well (if I remember right).

Either remove it completely from a default install (i.e. allow people who want it to add it on add/remove software) or make it easier to remove.

Give Ubuntu it's own calendar
Written by amosharper the 28 Feb 08 at 17:11. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's great that clicking on the clock brings up a calendar - but why Evolution's calendar?

The majority of people use a webmail service, so having a calendar that can sync with major web calendars (eg Google Calendar, Windows Live Calendar), that is easy to add and remove events to, to add alarms and notifications and to be able to do all of this without opening an email application would be fantastic, I think.

Thanks for the oppurtunity to be heard.

Faster Firefox
Written by dark the 29 Feb 08 at 00:13. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The default Firefox ships with defaults that aren't exactly ideal for speed. If Ubuntu would default to slightly improved defaults (Pipelining enabled for example) it would speed it up and make it more ideal.

Allow users to attach "bounties" to Ubuntu Brainstorm ideas
Written by Auzy the 29 Feb 08 at 11:41. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great if users could attach money to Brainstorm ideas. Its all good and well to post hundreds of ideas, but as things go, ideas which are posted first may not be the best ideas, but will climb to the top fastest (and will stay there, because people will vote for them on most popular).

Lets make it possible for people to donate $5 or so to their own ideas. Sure nobody may implement it, or the patch may not be accepted but it opens things up a lot more. Nobody loses either.

For those who think that this will turn linux coders into people who only code for money are wrong. There have been many bounties in the past, and they have not wiped out the many developers (me inclusive) who code as a hobby. Even with the gnome bounties in place, I still continued coding my application at the time for instance.

Anyway, at the end of the day, its not hard to implement, and it will do nothing but speed up development for highly wanted features (and maybe even organisations like gnome could use the money on spreading word about linux, or improving their hardware support).

ElisaBuntu
Written by jokerejoker the 9 May 08 at 09:32. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In the last days, I have be experienced the Elisa Media Center, and find it much prettier and easy to use then the mythTV media center...

My Idea is to make "ElisaBuntu", an ubuntu media center based on the elisa media center, like the mythbuntu is based on the mythTV...

To things I find is important, is that I think the elisa is much more pretty to use, and the installation of the ElisaBuntu will be just working with all kind of media out of the box and all media server and such, is just found out of the box...

Further more to come is that the elisa media center is module based and therefor I think that the potential of elisa is so much better then with the mythTV (MythBuntu)

***

Sorry for my english :)

Delay Hardy if necessary; shouldn't LTS focus on Bug Fixing?
Written by Redrazor39 the 19 Apr 08 at 00:34. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
I have read a lot of posts stating so many bugs in hardy and it will still be released. It is also slower to boot. THIS ISN'T HOW IT SHOULD BE!!!

Shouldn't LTS releases focus on bug fixing and stability and reliability, then speed, then other stuff?

We might have to delay hardy a couple of months if it is really this bad. I don't want a messed up computing system!
