URGENT: Vote for wallpaper

With 24 days left to launch there is an urgent need for a great wallpaper for Intrepid Ibex.
My suggestion is that Canonical asks the community for nice artwork in great, african, brown "Ubuntu-style" - and then let ppl vote on them on Brainstorm.

easier way to completelly empty the Trash

When the Trash are plenty of documents which chmod or chown doesn't fit with the user permitions, it seems to be very difficult to this user emptying the Trash.
When it happens, would be interesting the root password (like from 'gksudo') appearing asking permitions for these files being deleted.

Make doing backup fun

Ok, this is a challenge for all Ubuntu-developers.
I hate two things:
1. Printers
2. Backup
My dislike for printers and configuration is already targeted in Intrepid Ibex in the joint venture Ubuntu/Linux Foundation with OpenPrinting.
I would LOVE to see increased efforts around my second point: Backup.
I want a backup routine that is as seamless as anything else in Ubuntu. Perhaps something like Apples time machine.
Is it possible to make doing backup easy and fun?

Shut off Compiz-fusion before Gameplay Automatically

I don't know if all graphics cards that do this or just mine, but when I start up a full screen OpenGL game that goes full screen, the game flickers wherever a window is on the screen and at the network manager. Shutting off Compiz-Fusion and turning it back on can become a hassle. Whenever an OpenGL game starts fullscreen, Compiz-Fusion should be automatically shut down and when the game ends it should be turned back on.

Hardy should have set a wallpaper standard

(don't mark this as duplicate, the other idea combines wallpaper and sounds and is specifically against those sounds and wallpaper, this one is specifically about wallpaper and for continuing hardy's trend.)
Let me say this, every hardy review was complimenting ubuntu for the beautiful wallpaper. I personally loved it, and it was the first time the default ubuntu wallpaper actually made people interested in what OS I was running, I even kept variations of it for four months until just recently. Instead the beta ibex wallpaper is just ... well, I think plenty of criticism was told about it already, but I'll focus on my wish to see more wallpapers like hardy's one.
It would be very nice to let ubuntu always have an abstract wallpaper with a surrealistic painting of the version number's animal.
Ubuntu needs a personality, the idea to keep a brown-orange theme is a good one for this reason (as long as the theme looks good) cause we are not copying the competition. I really think that hardy's wallpaper was a step in a good direction and changing the direction now would be a bad idea.
Besides of the animal, I think the color choice for hardy's wallpaper was nice, with more live colors.

Enable preload as default in systems with huge amount of ram
|
|

Ubuntu has a software in universe called preload which monitors which apps you use most and fetches the binaries and their dependecies to ram before use so they start quickly when the user requests it.
In systems with low ram memory running this would probably be worse than not running, but there are several computers in the market coming with 2gb or more of ram memory now (specially because of Vista, which is very memory hungry).
So, my proposal is that:
(a) preload gets moved into main
(b) preload gets installed by default
(c) some shellscript tests how much ram does a machine have and start preload or not according to it
Maybe we can also find a way to not test it everytime it boots, avoiding a unnecessary boot slowdown since the amount of memory *can* change over time but *usually* don't.
We could try something running thru crontab every N days to check if it had changed and ajust a flag in preload shellscript accordingly.
For more information, try this in a terminal:
apt-cache show preload

Smarter management of apps in 'Add/Remove Applicaions'

Better distinction between installed softwares and new softwares marked for installation in 'Add/Remove Applications', like in Synaptic Package Manager.
Right now, the installed apps and those marked for installation look the same and causes confusion when user wants to unmark something but instead may accidentally cause an uninstall of an old program.

Nautilus should inform you, in the Trash folder, in the stripe with button "Empty Trash", also display disk usage of files in it, it would be very useful information on the right place.

For the non Geek user, for the people who find hard to use a computer, ubuntu could include an Option in the system configuration (like a lock option or something) to make difficult changing the interface.
Some users dislike ubuntu because they get Lost all the time.
They erase the panels, change the icons size, erase the side panel in nautilus, etc. and they don't even notice that!
Some users just want a computer that looks the same so they don't get lost.
There are always family members who think its catastrophic to erase a panel. :)
THIS IS FOR THEM.
I will lost points for them.
Please support.

Brainstorm: warrant Ubuntu reply when an idea gets enough votes

There are many great ideas here on brainstorm that have gotten a lot of votes, but no official Ubuntu feedback. I think whenever an idea reaches a certain amount of votes - lets say 500 - it should warrant feedback from the Ubuntu team. Something short like
'yep this is a good idea, we'll seriously consider it'
or
'that is an awful idea, forget it!'
would suffice, so one can better tell if popular ideas have a realistic chance of getting picked up or not.
Some ideas already have this kind of feedback (or even more detailed) but I think a high number of positive votes should always warrant official feedback.

Truecrypt is a good disk crypt tool, the language packs can only work on Windows.
Add truecrypt to the official repository of ubuntu will help ordinary users.
And make it support i18n on linux is helpful for non English users.

when you plug in an unformatted drive, nothing happens. it would be helpful (for new users) to:
a) acknowledge the event, so they know the drive is not broken or anything, and
b) offer to format the drive

system -> reboot menu

(First, a quick note: When any reboot action other than 'apply kernel update' is performed, I want to hibernate if my machine supports it, not shut down the OS.)
I've tried out 8.10a6, so I know this would fit in somewhat well: GRUB should be able to have one-time boot options that can be selected from an OS that's currently running. We should take advantage of these possibilities.
Use case 1: I want to switch to XP to play games for a bit.
What I want to do: hibernate ubuntu, boot into XP
What reboot does: shuts down ubuntu, power cycles my machine, and, if I'm not sitting there waiting for that three second window in which to hit a key, boots right back into Ubuntu. This wastes my time and frustrates me.
Don't tell me to put XP as my default boot, because when I power my machine up, I usually want Ubuntu to load. I shouldn't have to watch ubuntu shut down and then lie in wait for grub and select an OS, I should be able to click
System -> Restart -> [Boot into XP]
..then go get a drink, come back, and be at my XP desktop. or Leopard, Fedora, or what have you, naturally. Whatever's in GRUB.
Remember, I care more about your logic feedback than your vote, so put 'er here.
..Other options in the system -> restart menu should include [boot from CD or DVD] and [apply kernel update].

When right clicking on a song in playlist/library, there should be an option to "Locate file on disk". Clicking on which would open the containing folder with the music file selected.
