Move Firefox preferences to Tools menu

In Windows, the Firefox Preferences option is in the Tools menu. In Linux/Unix, it's in the Edit menu. It makes a lot more sense in Tools than it does in Edit, and moving it would help cross-platform familiarity.

Install time/post install advanced options

"Features should be easily discoverable, or they will go unused", from the Ubuntu Design Principles.
There are some kind of options that would make the Ubuntu installer more versatile (Versatility is something that I relate to Linux and GNU in general, and although simplicity and easy to use are generally good things, I think it is also important to provide users with options and somehow keep the versatility and the easy to use together). Remember there are many types of users, and it would be good to Ubuntu to catch all those types.
Here I give some hints of the type of advanced options I would like to see (These changes are possible to do already, I am just asking for a cleaner/easier way):
> There are some people that have configurations where it doesn't makes sense to use NM, for example, USB modem users, where NM doesn't recognizes the connection. So it would be good to provide an option (some kind of Advanced Settings) in the installation program, to disable it.
> Option to enable/disable IPv6.
> Choice of services enabled/disabled at boot.
> Some kind of adjust system for performance/eye-candy thing, providing defaults, and letting the user choose more specific changes (There is/was something like this, although for KDE performance settings only - KPersonalizer).
These are just some examples. The general idea is to add more advanced options to the installer for advanced users, but also to let new users to know that those options exist, keeping the system clean (less workarounds), easy and versatile (I love this word).

Hypothetical: Eye Tracking

Imagine being able navigate through Ubuntu, without hands or voice. Eye tracking can take laziness to a new level! Just look where you want the cursor to be, and raise your eyebrows to click (blinking doesn't work to well). It could also help people who are paralyzed and can't speak.
Unfortunately, eye tracking requires expensive equipment. It would be neat if would work with one or more cheap webcams. Then there could be four point calibration between eye gaze and the screen.

There has been many requests from users from windows background, mac users who want to use ubuntu, gnome in particular to change the Main menu(applications, places, system menu's) to look better and more usability.i wonder if ubuntu developers care much about it.Its already a big mess, windows and mac users find hard time getting acquainted to it.speaking of Guinness and originality to linux where is it(?),Every distro uses its core as Gnome but changes it to its own style look out Opensuse, pclinuxos,Linux mint, etc,yes ubuntu just kept there logo in main menu but nothing special there, they haven't changed the default core of Appearance to make it pleasing or usable,"just works(tag missing) in panel behaviour"
The point is i dont want to copy anything from windows or mac but improvements in organizing and bridging user learning curve easier when switching os,make it usable.user doesn't should not need to read manual to "know the default Linux Interface".

Gimme(make use of its intelligent organization system)

Noise Cancelation when using headphones

For those of you that are unaware of noise cancellation headphones, they are headphones that have a mic and listen to the noise around you and then alter the sound that comes out of the headphones. The result is great.
I would like to suggest that there be an option in Ubuntu to provide noise cancellation when there is a mic in the computer and someone is using headphones.
I propose a tab in System -> Preferences -> Sound The tab would have an input drop down menu and an output drop down menu. This is where you can specify your input/ output sources. To activate / deactivate noise cancellation it should be straight forward, maybe right click on the volume icon in the panel and click on noise cancellation.
Real world example... Jack is sitting on a plane and a baby is crying. Jack turns on noise cancellation and can no longer hear the crying.

F-Spot import/file organization should be configurable.
|
|
Written by lutimdale the 25 Jul 08 at 11:26. Category: Graphics.
Related to: F-Spot Photo Manager.
New
|
Currently, pictures are organized like this:
Pictures/2008/07/01
Pictures/2008/07/05
Everyone organizes their large photo collections by full date because
1) this is how the pictures are taken (in events that typicaly fall on one date)
2) this is how typically other photo management programs group them (see Vista Photo Gallery, Picasa, etc.)
3) you need to be able to get at the folders from outside of the application. This is critical for backup/recovery, passing to friends, etc.
4) Having the folder marked as day only makes it not practical to add a description to the folder name
What I'm talking about is that on import, f-spot should by default create folders such
Pictures/2008-07-01
Pictures/2008-07-05
This is the best starting point, since 90% of the time, each album is separated by day. The date should be pulled in from exif data. I actually organize my albums by year, then date + description. For example,
Pictures/2008/2008-07-01 Birthday Party
Pictures/2008/2008-07-05 Camping
This should be configurable as everyone has their own preferences. Yes, even this format should be supported
Pictures/2008/07/01
Pictures/2008/07/05
but it should not be the default.
You should be able to edit the folder name from within F-Spot as well as from the file manager. F-Spot should be able to recognize the change and not loose any categorization for the affected photos.

I think is god to implement a program where you chose Ubuntu performances:
-Ubuntu Fast Mode - minim graphical, best performances, recommended for old PC.
-Ubuntu Auto Performances Mode - Ubuntu chose best settings for your PC, depends on your video card, memory and CPU.
-Ubuntu Hight-Graphical Mode - This set Ubuntu to have best look, and activate more futures.
After the user chose the performance mod he can also edit the pre-settings and save as My Ubuntu Version.
Also when PC start-up verify if some hardware change and if, verify if some other version is better to chose.

Pidgin should show pro's and cons of protocols and mark bad ones

We should warn users who use proprietary protocols in pidgin and other messaging programs.
Many proprietary protocols are often changed, so even in their native OS, their clients often break (like MSN messenger). And the servers are centralised, with no real guarantees of privacy in place. This of course is bad for users also because the servers can be taken down without warning.
People should be aware of the benefits and flaws of the protocol. I'm not saying we force it on them, but give them the ability to find out if they want to (maybe have an "about this protocol" button).
Otherwise, people will always continue to use protocols like ICQ, without realising how bad it is for them. And people don't realise that their business would have better confidentiality if they run a jabber server rather then use ICQ's public servers for instance

Develop a competitor to Flash/Silverlight

For years Flash was the only way to embed multimedia in a website. Microsoft is now trying to enter the market with Silverlight. The Open Source Community should do the same. An open standard needs to be developed for embedding multimedia into websites, so both content providers and users aren't locked into one vendor.

Support novice programmers to optimise their progs for Ubuntu

I think you should put a lot of effort to come up with some documentation supporting novice programmers to use existing frameworks in an optimal way to support Ubuntu.
Questions that could arose in their minds when they want to do a program for Ubuntu:
-> How do I access stock icons from my prog?
-> How do I use Notifications?
-> How to include File dialogs?
-> How do I use the common permission-dialog?
-> How can I use dbus?
-> How do I come from code to actual program used by mass
-> How do I ensuer it can be used not only by gnome or kde or whatever...?
...
...
...
I guess this would lead to more fresh programms but also in a more consistent appearence over all of them. Of course a single point of entry should be used for most spread programming languages
Happy for your reactions...

During the installation of ubuntu can add a screen selection of software that you wanted to install (with a brief explanation of his role). This does not install programs that are not going to use, saving time of installation and hard disk space.
For example, I do not use evolution, then that will allow me to not install it
