Consider Releasing Kubuntu Intrepid with late beta KOffice 2/Amarok 2/K3B 2
Written by derubermensch the 31 Jul 08 at 12:59. Category: System. Related to: Kubuntu. Already implemented
The current blueprint for Kubuntu Intrepid indicates that where analogous KDE 4 packages aren't stable, their KDE 3.5 equivalents will be used instead. I submit however that it should at least be considered that Kubuntu Intrepid be shipped with KOffice 2, Amarok 2, K3B 2, and KTorrent 2 if any package is near production release (i.e, a Release Candidate has been released, or the last Beta before Release Candidacy). I think that these packages offer a greater KDE4 experience than their KDE 3.5 counterparts and users would generally appreciate it moreso if they were included.

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 was released with Firefox 3 still in beta, and this was done with the confidence that the production release would soon follow. What was key here was the trust in the Mozilla developers to deliver, and I think it would go a ways to show that same trust to KDE developers if Kubuntu is to finally receive the first-class support Intrepid apparently is to be blessed with.

Moreover, Intrepid is not a LTS release; support for it ends six months after release. The possible repercussions for including the packages shouldn't be as alarming as the inclusion of beta software in a LTS release.

As far as I understand, when shutting down, Usplash still flickers a moment. In any case, for Xubuntu and Kubuntu (and perhaps other derivatives too), the Usplash still isn't displayed during the full shutdown. If this is possible without being a very hackish solution, it'd be awesome.

bug
Written by droetker the 24 Jun 08 at 13:47. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Kubuntu. Implemented
There is a very serious feature missing in KDE 4.1 which will come out next month:
You can't move items on the panel, once they are there.
There is a huge discussion ongoing, the developers say it will be possible in KDE 4.2
It is NO bug, and it will be included in KDE 4.2, but that is WAY too late.

It was possible in all KDE, GNOME, Windows, OSX versions by now - not making it possible would be a backstep.
SUSE (11.0) made it possible in their with KDE 4.0(!), so there IS already a patch.

Please vote here, vote for the "bug" at the KDE Bugtracker if you have an account there, urge at launchpad, help to make that possible.

(K)Ubuntify KDE 4.1
Written by Primož Papič the 11 Jun 08 at 14:30. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Priority: Low
Realisation: Medium
======================
I personally think that Ubuntu KDE (Kubuntu) is too generic.
It looks just like any other distro. Only thing thats setting us apart from others is a nice window decoration, and apt.
(Maybe something more but I don't see it)

So my idea is that Kubuntu should become more specific.
The KDE 4.1 and Kubuntu both use Kickoff menu which was first developed by SUSE, this just shows how much other distros, well mainly SuSE are investing in KDE.
And with KDE 4.1 specialization is very easy. Not only that there will be other menus like Lancelot and Raptor, but also the whole plasma is customizable.

So Kubuntu, could have an default two panels, with an easy and intuitive menu that would simulate Ubuntu (GNOME) simplicity and ease of use. Kubuntu should be KDE for human beings, but it lacks a bit more humanity.
I'm not saying make it look like GNOME, no make it look like KDE for humans would look, make it look like Ubuntu with KDE.

I know there is only one developer working on KDE full time, but this is something that could be developed by community. (Unfortunately I can't help with development, but I could help with ideas) Community could develop a Kubuntu menu or propose how the Kubuntu should look.

At least consider this idea for 9.04 version of Kubuntu.
It would be really good if community would be more involved in whole look of Kubuntu.

I could propose similar idea for GNOME Ubuntu, but I don't know how customizable is GNOME, and Ubuntu has it's "soul" it has something that differs it from other GNOME distros even if it is just the use of warm colours (brown).

Associate Python, Perl and bash scripts by extension
Written by Auzy the 20 Jun 08 at 12:19. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Running python/perl/bash programs in gnome by double clicking them usually opens them as as a document wrongly, instead of executing them. The only way fix currently is for users to mess around with permissions, edit the source code, or/and use terminal.

Scripts are MEANT to be easy and convenient, and should consistently require only 1 click to run (as they do on any other platform). They don't do that currently because Linux sees them as plain-text files, and ignores the file extensions. And, the permissions trick only works if the script/program was coded in linux!

If we set up:
*.pl to run with perl
*.sh to run with the sh interpreter
*.py to run with python
properly, perl, python and bash programs will consistently run with 1 click, instead of requiring 2 actions at least. And it will be consistent with other OS's, without breaking any programs.

And users will be happier because everything runs in 1 click, instead of screwing with permissions or editing source code.

Klipper with SQLite (permanent and searchable clipboard history)
Written by azag the 22 Jun 08 at 16:36. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Klipper is one of the greatest ideas in kde, I use it alot.
so why not push it to the next level?

I configure it to 200 history size but the "more" entry is annoying to search text

so search entry and set history size to 100000000 or 10 years old would be nice ;)

Create Oxygen icon theme for OpenOffice.org
Written by randall29 the 21 May 08 at 09:40. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Well, it's most likely that Kubuntu Intrepid will ship with KDE4.1.
Maybe it would be useful to start working on an openoffice.org integration with Qt4, and some icons to match Oxygen theme.

Currently, Crystal icons look very out of place in KDE4, and using a KDE3 theme on its office suite breaks totally the visual coherence of the desktop.

I think it would be a great thing to have OpenOffice visually integrating nicely in KDE 4.

Do not install Ekiga by default   forum
Written by olskar the 20 Jun 08 at 21:04. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I dont think Ekiga is used by many people, perhaps we should consider removing it from the cd in favour for other software or more drivers?

I made up a quickvote at the ubuntuforums to see if I was the only one not using Ekiga.

Check the thread posted here for information and discussion.

No, a combo-box/dropdown should not take up the entire height screen at all!
Written by deadowl the 20 May 08 at 02:50. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
What can I say, there are examples of this all over the place. One place of note is the open/save filetype combobox/dropdown in the GIMP. I feel extraordinarily bad for the person with a lower resolution on that menu. There's simply got to be a better way to show so many options!

What's even worse, it's difficult to scroll up and down as the list gets larger because the scroll buttons move further away from your mouse.

Remove Firefox extensions from repositories
Written by Adys the 12 May 08 at 18:56. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Firefox extensions are a pain to maintain in the repositories, and very often lag behind when updating them. They should be removed as they are EXTREMELY easy to install from Firefox itself.

Ubufox may be an exception due to its nature though.

Adept Notifier Plasmoid

I was thinking about the impending release of Adept 3 that will be included with Intrepid Ibex. (As far as I know)

The thought that came to me was "What if the Adept Notifier wasn't a systray app? What if it was a Plasmoid instead?" As I thought it out, the idea sounded better and better, and here's why.

Features:
-You have a regular, panel-living notifier with your icons for available updates, etc. (The beauty is that you could put it anywhere on the desktop you want )
-Clicking on the notifier will cause a smallish box to pop up. (Think Device Notifier) This box will list all of the packages that can be upgraded.
-The box will also have a prominent push button at the bottom that will say "Launch Updater" or something to that effect.

Here are some other nice things that could come from such a Plasmoid:
-One less object in the systray, which I personally don't like in general. Systrays tend to be hard to implement correctly, and currently KDE4's systray has it's share of bugs and limitations. (This is somewhat personal opinion, I don't want this to start arguments or nothin'.)
-Systray apps don't get the coolness of being able to do stuff that Plasmoids can. (See features)

Oh, and I can't do mockups worth crap, so I took the Device Notifier box and labeled the visual changes that would be made. Obviously, the Launch updater button wouldn't be inside the white area, etc. The mockup can be found in the ubuntuforums thread.

Synaptic: simultaneous download if downloading from several servers
Written by steve196 the 10 May 08 at 10:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
Although i am opposed to synaptic doing simultaneous downloads from one server, i think, if it downloads from several servers (for example standard, medibuntu and winehq repos), it should download one file from each simultaneously instead of waiting for downloads from comparatively slow sources to complete in order to start the others.

Of course, this needs an upper limit. In case there is a lot of different repos i think, the maximum number of simultaneous downloads should be something like three or four.

edit: Several comments to this idea have said, that this is already implemented. At the minute i cannot verify or falsify that, but i tend to believe, they are right.

Make the LiveCD boot menu more friendly.   forum
Written by cookieofdoom the 25 Apr 08 at 15:14. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Upon booting to the LiveCD some users can be overwhelmed. Many users are afraid that even trying Ubuntu from the CD may wipe out all their data. Some changes were made in Hardy that made it a little easier, but your average user could still be confused.

Add more information to the menu, describe for the user what each option does. People are afraid of what they don't know. Adding some information in a side panel would not be hard, would not hinder advanced users, but would help new users understand what they're doing. An image of what this menu might look like is attached in the thread on ubuntuforums.

Make KDE4 (4.1) default DE for Ibex
Written by jtsop the 22 Apr 08 at 10:34. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's a slippery road for Gnome to go after Mono. The reason for which Gnome was created does not exist (qt loophole). Novel and leader of gnome are not so clear about their intentions. KDE4 is really ahead of time. Maybe Ibex should go for KDE 4.1 as the default Desktop
Environment?

Release Kubuntu 8.041 CD's which fix bugs.
Written by Auzy the 25 Apr 08 at 08:11. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In kubuntu's case, it really does need a 8.041 updated CD. I hate to say it, but both the KDE4 and KDE3 live CD's are incredibly buggy.

- If you try to configure samba for instance in KDE3, it says you need to install Samba.. Well, samba comes preinstalled..
- The kde3/4 VNC server seems to ignore when you click that it should allow uninvited connections, and not confirm them. It still asks for confirmation sometimes.
- In KDE4, I dare people to try to configure their IP manually using the knetworkmanager (tried in sudo too). Its missing a .so. So people who cant use DHCP for instance, cant use it.
- A KDEsudo error popped up for me after reboot in KDE3 and KDE4.

I've found MANY bugs within the first hour of using them. Apple releases updated OSX discs without an uproar. We have to accept that kubuntu 8.04 isn't quite final yet, and do the same. And yes, tried Ubuntu too, and that was flawless. But both Kubuntu CD's have some pretty serious bugs.

And no, I'm not a Apple/Microsoft spy who is trying to cause a massive flamewar. Kubuntu has the potential to be a very stable OS, but we have to quickly patch these bugs, and re-release, or our first impression to users will be "buggy".

Strongly market QT4's advantages vs Cocoa to Apple developers
Written by Auzy the 21 Apr 08 at 15:00. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I am a paid Apple Developer member. I used to program in Cocoa. However, a week ago I gave QT a try, and as an Apple developer, I was amazed (I actually preferred it over Cocoa in most places, and over time, I believe it may be over nearly all places). QT is cross platform, and what we need to do is actively compare QT4.4 against Cocoa towards developers, and you will win them over.

I propose that we push QT support as a major feature in Kubuntu 8.04 on the website, and flaunt its features vs Apple's Cocoa language. They are very similar concept wise, and everyone knows C++, so they will be willing to listen. And in fact, for developers, QT has a lot more opportunities :) Everyone likes a cross platform language (with QTJambi, its java, so you don't even need to recompile).

I've shown a few people interested in Apple development the latest QT, and they were also amazed. But now's the time to start pushing this, at launch, instead of mentioning QT vs Cocoa 3 weeks after a Apple Development conference which hypes everyone up so they don't want to listen. Or when Apple developers still think of Linux as lame coding libraries.

We need to get the word out to developers we have an awesome development library, which has fantastic development tools which can easily compete against Cocoa. Because if we succeed, it means a whole new generation of programmers on the linux platform, and a whole lot of new applications

Our problem is, we aren't marketing Linux at all towards developers of other operating systems with any ammunition other then "its free". Lets change that..

Transfer new ideas for already solved problems into "Implemented" category
Written by salec the 12 Mar 08 at 13:08. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There is a number of ideas which are readily commented with description of how given problem has already been solved - of which, obviously, submitters were unaware.

This ideas potentially burden the Brainstorm system and slow down review of "fresh" new ideas. They also get low vote count (if voters read comments and realize there is nothing new to be done about it), or are voted down.

Grouping them also makes a foundation for a good FAQ or a Help because they show there is a function some users need and would use, which is not readily documented or accessible - clearly a legitimate job for maintainers.

Commentators which know how to invoke, already implemented, asked for, function should have an option to suggest this kind of transfer (flag the idea for "FAQ-isation"), after they make the clarifying comment.

Each idea contributor should check that ("have been done") category first, then other, new, potentially similar ideas.
