I think that if ubuntu would support windows more then it would have a lot more users.. (and i mean a lot)
for example: if exe file would be more supported and you wont need to install wine for example then it would be nice.. (people that came from windows like to use there own softwares...)
and if the synpatic would created packages by it self it could be nice..
and if for example: i just started for the first time ubuntu and i think it would be nice if i could choose the software i would like to install at the first time i boot ubuntu then it would be nice..
plus i think that ubuntu isnt so supportive in drivers for hardware.. for example i have the printer: Lexmark z705 and the driver ubuntu installed for me (the default driver was installed) isnt good for my printer.. it should support better old hardware..
for last: i think that ubuntu (and linux at all) have a lot more job to do.. (thats why windows st stiil have more users)
plus my screen is old and ubuntu doesnt support it so well..
I just started to use ubuntu tweak and i think it is needed to be pre-installed with ubuntu and not by the user after ubuntu is first installed..
i think that the archive manager sucks.. and should be more improved

There should be an easy way to create shortcuts in Nautilus using drag-and-drop.

Please allow local login for users without password. May people have their computer on a secure place and have no reason to protect the computer access too. These people only need authentication on login from the internet.

I think It could be a good idea to add Screenlets (Http://www.screenlets.org), Awn (Http://www.launchpad.net/awn) and Wammu (Http://www.wammu.eu) as some integrated parts of Ubuntu/Gnome...
Really...

Help to develop Gnome 3

Gnome needs a revoultion. Ubuntu uses Gnome.
Canonical could help the Gnome3-developers e.g. with money, tips, pc-resources or something else to speed up the development and to create a better Gnome3-release.
(KDE4 has much more features than Gnome, it is faster and looks better (my oppinion). Also it uses the powerful Qt4 as widgetset that is better than GTK+ at time. Gnome is going to leave behind KDE)
[edit] I dont't say that any DE is better, but Gnome needs help and Ubuntu primary uses Gnome. KDE4 is a great DE without help from the Ubuntu developers. [/edit]

Clicking a nick in xchat should allow to send personal message in common chat

Clicking an other user's nick in xchat should insert the nick into the input field to send personal message in common chat, and not open a separated private chat room.
Currently it is very difficult to hold conversation in the common room: if you address a certain user, you need to copy his nick and manually insert it into input field.

Progressively eliminate binary blobs

Binary blobs provide us with short-term convenience.
However, in the long run they are bad.
We should strive to progressively eliminate binary blobs. One blob at a time.
The inclusion of binary blobs are sending the wrong signals. It is not something we should encourage.
If the amount of binary blobs grow then I think that is very dangerous.
* Blobs cannot be supported by developers.
* Blobs cannot be fixed by developers.
* Blobs cannot be improved.
* Blobs cannot be audited
* Blobs are specific to an architecture, thus less portable.
* Blobs are quite often massively bloated.
Blobs can contain malicious code and backdoors and you may never know. You cant trust them.
Inclusion of blobs are sacrificing our values.
It is giving up essential freedom to purchase a little temporary convenience.
Pleasant in the short-term but bad in the long term.

If an idea has got a score less then 0 (or any other reasonable limit) after a week (can also be altered) then it should be deleted or moved to an archive or something... I find it hard to look through ideas as it is right now, lets only keep the relevant or atleast seperate them...

Automatic Driver Installation, Removal, Update

There should be one database of all of the stable drivers for Ubuntu. Any company or person that makes a driver and it is tested and deemed as stable should go into that database. Then, when Ubuntu is first started via live CD, it can scan the hardware with lspci, lsusb, and other commands automatically to detect all of the hardware it can. Then, it can take that data and match it up to hardware in the database and download and install the latest stable drivers available. Drivers for hardware that does not apply to your machine can then be deleted to free space. Make this the same for updates, too. Add this database to the software sources by default and updates ONLY for the drivers you have installed/need will be downloaded and installed.
This would free up space, efficiently obtain all necessary drivers, and not confuse the user.
While it would require a working internet connection, it should only happen when an internet connection is found an recognized. A notification could pop up asking if the user wanted to start the driver wizard (or some other creative name the community comes up with).
Please comment. I personally think this would help a lot, but I need your comments to make it better, fix problems, answer questions, and more.

KDE to OS X or Windows Interface Familiarity to Help New Adopters

Short Version:
During Kubuntu installation have an option to make your default interface like the default (2 options, Kubuntu or KDE4), OS X (2 options, Leopard or Tiger), or Windows (2 options, XP or Vista).
Long Version:
As it stands there are basic options like common menu bar, but that needs to be made more involved. With the new KWin graphics in KDE4 it should be simpler.
I'd love to check an option during install for "I am used to OS X, make me feel at home". Then when it boots up, I've got the common semi-transparent menu bar, a nice refective dock, smooth transitions and transparencies, and so on.
This would make it an easier sell for my Mom or tech-inept friends who don't like change. Also for people like me who like Linux/BSD but love the polish of OS X.
This would be a great thing to upstream to the KDE guys so BSD and any other *nix FOSS people could use it too!
With the great progress coming in apps, it won't be long before digiKam/Amarok/KOffice/Konqueror are joined by others that with this could have commercials with the pc and mac guy and say..."I'm just as good or better then Mac guy, but FREE!"

Remove Xubuntu as obsoleted

According to my tests Xubuntu is now slower than Ubuntu. In the newest version(gutsy and hardy) Gnome has reached the lightness of Xfce and it's now even faster. In the addition it's very hard to do things with Xubuntu.
No one should use Xubuntu anymore. It's old, it's not good. Xubuntu should be removed from the official Ubuntu variations as obsoleted.

Don't you think so?
Almost every ubuntu user already modified his xorg.conf file because he had a resolution problem
Don't you think it would be easier to simpely disiplay every known resolution instead of the ones who are registered in xorg.conf
Seriously, people who don't know anything about computers HATE these type of manipulations.
DO SOMETHING FOR THE SAKE OF GOD!

Anti Virus and Anti Spyware Software, for Ubuntu Users

I have successfully installed Ubuntu 7.10 in my second PC and I am very pleased with the operating system and the applications provided with it. I wish to promote it in our local community for those who cannot afford to have expensive products installed in their home PCs. However, my main concern is about Anti Virus and Anti Spyware software availability for Ubuntu users.
I will be delighted to hear of any Anti Virus software availability for Ubuntu.

In the Linux community we like to help each other, so why not take this to the next level.
For example in Edubuntu why not have a quick link to a little help applet or a spot on the Ubuntu website where we can sign up for certain topics we can help with and when someone needs help in these areas we are notified and can choose to help or not.

In the past I have had problems when installing or making changes to my vga settings that would cause gnome to crash ultimately sending me to the command line. I suggest that in this event that gnome should be defaulted to the layout that is on the initial install and allow the user to troubleshoot or get help via chat. It's a feature that was useful in windoze but is not yet available in my new found home in Ubuntu.
