Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time   forum
Written by Arioch the 28 Feb 08 at 15:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

Consider Releasing Kubuntu Intrepid with late beta KOffice 2/Amarok 2/K3B 2
Written by derubermensch the 31 Jul 08 at 12:59. Category: System. Related to: Kubuntu. Already implemented
The current blueprint for Kubuntu Intrepid indicates that where analogous KDE 4 packages aren't stable, their KDE 3.5 equivalents will be used instead. I submit however that it should at least be considered that Kubuntu Intrepid be shipped with KOffice 2, Amarok 2, K3B 2, and KTorrent 2 if any package is near production release (i.e, a Release Candidate has been released, or the last Beta before Release Candidacy). I think that these packages offer a greater KDE4 experience than their KDE 3.5 counterparts and users would generally appreciate it moreso if they were included.

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 was released with Firefox 3 still in beta, and this was done with the confidence that the production release would soon follow. What was key here was the trust in the Mozilla developers to deliver, and I think it would go a ways to show that same trust to KDE developers if Kubuntu is to finally receive the first-class support Intrepid apparently is to be blessed with.

Moreover, Intrepid is not a LTS release; support for it ends six months after release. The possible repercussions for including the packages shouldn't be as alarming as the inclusion of beta software in a LTS release.

A Program that is similar to google earth.
Written by poflaco the 22 Jun 08 at 18:58. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Their is a program that shows the earth and you add different layers over it but it seems to be too inadequate. A new one should be made. Although we may not be able to get satellite images we can create a program that shows a digital earth and we can change that map settings from topographical or political. Since we have Linux in many languages we can get lots of help in creating a digital earth.

Use Oxygen theme for Firefox in KDE4
Written by nivus the 22 Jun 08 at 09:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When installed in kubuntu, Firefox must use Oxygene style by default. It may be, for example, Kde4 + Firefox3 0.10 ( http://ramonantonio.net/kde-firefox/ ), or https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/7962

Help to develop Gnome 3
Written by Matthias the 11 May 08 at 15:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome needs a revoultion. Ubuntu uses Gnome.
Canonical could help the Gnome3-developers e.g. with money, tips, pc-resources or something else to speed up the development and to create a better Gnome3-release.
(KDE4 has much more features than Gnome, it is faster and looks better (my oppinion). Also it uses the powerful Qt4 as widgetset that is better than GTK+ at time. Gnome is going to leave behind KDE)
[edit] I dont't say that any DE is better, but Gnome needs help and Ubuntu primary uses Gnome. KDE4 is a great DE without help from the Ubuntu developers. [/edit]
[Sorry for my English]

I was thinking about the impending release of Adept 3 that will be included with Intrepid Ibex. (As far as I know)

The thought that came to me was "What if the Adept Notifier wasn't a systray app? What if it was a Plasmoid instead?" As I thought it out, the idea sounded better and better, and here's why.

Features:
-You have a regular, panel-living notifier with your icons for available updates, etc. (The beauty is that you could put it anywhere on the desktop you want )
-Clicking on the notifier will cause a smallish box to pop up. (Think Device Notifier) This box will list all of the packages that can be upgraded.
-The box will also have a prominent push button at the bottom that will say "Launch Updater" or something to that effect.

Here are some other nice things that could come from such a Plasmoid:
-One less object in the systray, which I personally don't like in general. Systrays tend to be hard to implement correctly, and currently KDE4's systray has it's share of bugs and limitations. (This is somewhat personal opinion, I don't want this to start arguments or nothin'.)
-Systray apps don't get the coolness of being able to do stuff that Plasmoids can. (See features)

Oh, and I can't do mockups worth crap, so I took the Device Notifier box and labeled the visual changes that would be made. Obviously, the Launch updater button wouldn't be inside the white area, etc. The mockup can be found in the ubuntuforums thread.

Automatic Driver Installation, Removal, Update
Written by Redrazor39 the 27 Apr 08 at 23:16. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There should be one database of all of the stable drivers for Ubuntu. Any company or person that makes a driver and it is tested and deemed as stable should go into that database. Then, when Ubuntu is first started via live CD, it can scan the hardware with lspci, lsusb, and other commands automatically to detect all of the hardware it can. Then, it can take that data and match it up to hardware in the database and download and install the latest stable drivers available. Drivers for hardware that does not apply to your machine can then be deleted to free space. Make this the same for updates, too. Add this database to the software sources by default and updates ONLY for the drivers you have installed/need will be downloaded and installed.

This would free up space, efficiently obtain all necessary drivers, and not confuse the user.

While it would require a working internet connection, it should only happen when an internet connection is found an recognized. A notification could pop up asking if the user wanted to start the driver wizard (or some other creative name the community comes up with).

Please comment. I personally think this would help a lot, but I need your comments to make it better, fix problems, answer questions, and more.

Gnome safe mode
Written by toucher5 the 20 Apr 08 at 20:18. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In the past I have had problems when installing or making changes to my vga settings that would cause gnome to crash ultimately sending me to the command line. I suggest that in this event that gnome should be defaulted to the layout that is on the initial install and allow the user to troubleshoot or get help via chat. It's a feature that was useful in windoze but is not yet available in my new found home in Ubuntu.
