Icons in the Gnome Panel without getting shuffled
Written by nitrofurano the 6 Sep 08 at 15:15. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
I used to have Gnome Panel plenty of icons, but when i change the display resolution, everything there persists on getting shuffled.

The icons inside the Gnome Panel should follow a location sequence (and if it's edge aligned, or center aligned, or part of an icon group), whatever the screen resolution is...

I think Gnome Panel will keep on being great when stopping, after a week, on leaving the clock in the left edge, and the Gnome menu in the right edge...

Make Nautilus Copy/Cut Follow files to Trash
Written by dry_carton the 16 Aug 08 at 14:18. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you copy/cut a file or folder and you then remove it to trash before you get to paste it somewhere, Nautilus (or whatever handles the copy/cut mechanisms) does not follow that inode (if that is the correct term) to the trash folder. This must be fixed!

Evalute More Blueprints from Users
Written by dry_carton the 13 Jul 08 at 12:06. Category: Others. Related to: launchpad.net. New
Launchpad is a great platform for software development, and in the bug-reporting department, everything is fine. But it seems that the effort to read and evaluate user's blueprint is often left much undone. Take a look at this picture: http://i34.tinypic.com/1zhvh1.png

Those are all of the blueprints I have registered on Launchpad. But as you can see, not even one of them has been evaluated, and I wrote many of those several months ago! I hope you agree, so something will be done about this.

Use BitTorrent as primary protocol for apt-get
Ubuntu

This is an attempt at a unification of:

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/7081/
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/7390/
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/7649/
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/7725/

I can't think, nor have I heard, of any showstopper reason for why BitTorrent shouldn't be used as the primary download method of Ubuntu respository packages. Although the specifics of the implementation of this idea will be different for ISOs and repositories, I feel they should be unified in the brainstorm because the goal is to allow the rapid, efficient, reliable, and available download of Ubuntu software.

Implementation Benefits

1) Speed. All Ubuntu downloads (ISO downloads, dist upgrades, regular system updates, and new application installs) will as a whole be faster. Generally torrent download speeds benefit from higher numbers of downloaders that seed, which Ubuntu users have demonstrated they are prone to do. BitTorrent is better able to absorb (and eventually use as an asset) large numbers of users attempting to download data at the same time, such as with the recent mad rush of Hardy downloaders/upgraders.

2) Efficiency. The BitTorrent protocol has proven to be one of the most efficient methods of distributing data amongst a large number of clients. It will harness the collective upstream of tens of thousands of Ubuntu users, from DSL and cable connections to the fastest of corporate connections.

3) Reliability. Checksums guarantee the integrity of BitTorrent downloads, so data corruption is much less likely to occur. Only the pieces that fail checksum are redownloaded, contributing to points 1 and 2.

After install with synaptic sometimes the menu is not changed

When we install a new application (not a library), in the menu is added the launch point. This sometimes doesn´t work.

Denote original poster in comments
Written by belovedmonster the 10 Jul 08 at 21:53. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When the original poster of a brainstorm writes a comment on their idea it should be visually different or have an icon next to the name to denote that it is the original poster. Otherwise it isnt always obvious that it is a comment by the original poster and not just another user.

[Nautilus] show more details in the information side pane
Written by mprince the 10 Jul 08 at 21:02. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When a user has the Information side pane selected as a view-- Nautilus currently only shows how many items are in the folder and the date it was modified. That's not much info for something dubbed the Information pane.

It would be useful if it also showed the total size of the folder and maybe some indication of the folder permissions.

There's also a button to "Open with archive manager" but it never seems to open anything when I press it.

SSL secured repository
Written by Eldmannen the 10 Jul 08 at 23:50. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to be able to connect to the software repository using a secure connection that uses SSL.

This will prevent man-in-the-middle attacks (MITM).

It will also prevent example a totalitarian government to snoop on what I download or update. Example, maybe I download cryptography, anonymity or privacy software.

It will also insure that the repository is the real repository, and not a fake one that hosts a Trojan horse or a keystroke logger.

Change default hotkeys to use Win (super)
Written by satana the 11 Jul 08 at 12:18. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In today all keyboards has "win"-key. I propose to use this key by default for all WM/DE hotkey combinations (win+d, win+r, etc...)
This will uniform and preclude all conflicts with other desktop software.

Warn the user if he is connected to an unencrypted WLAN
Written by Thorsten Sick the 10 Jul 08 at 16:35. Category: Security. Related to: Network Manager. New
If the user is connected to an unencrypted wireless network or the encryption is weak (WEP), display either a warning symbol on the network icon or display a warning message (popup/slidein).
Make this information available using dbus for other applications(online banking).Using this information they can stop the user from doing anything dangerous like banking over an unencrypted and open connection.

network manager internet indicator
Written by nelson.blaha the 10 Jul 08 at 16:42. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Network Manager. New
Currently network manager can assure you that you're connected to a network, but if you want to be sure that that network is supplying you with the internet, you have to go check it for yourself. I propose some kind of indicator in the notification area that indicates access to, say, the ubuntu website.

In addition to simple broken connections, this would be useful when using public wifi that requires a logon.

Quicker, more efficient updates
Written by bryhoyt the 10 Jul 08 at 20:27. Category: System. Related to: Update manager. New
There should be a more efficient format for apt-get (or the update manager) to download updates. Firstly, it should only need to download the files that have changed in a package (not the whole package), and secondly, it should download a DIFF of those files.

My latest update contains a 34.2 WHOPPING MB update to the linux restricted modules. Here's the changelog:

* Fix broadcom Makefile to get correct objects from split-module.

I'm downloading 34.2Mb just to get a *Makefile update*??? I don't even use any broadcom stuff. Even if I did, I probably wouldn't care enough about a Makefile to make it worthwhile downloading 34.2Mb!

Improve Recycle bin & Delete files
Written by catalania the 11 Jul 08 at 14:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi! I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, and I dislike the "recycle bin", and the way to delete files with delete/supr button.

Like said dr88dr88 in:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/60/

"We need the possibility to restore deleted files with a right mouse click in the trash bin in Gnome."

But too, a restore option in menu "file".

And one more thing, very important, a menu "tools" to configure the recycle bin. With:

* When select delete o push delete/supr button:
- Ask to send file/s & folder/s to the recycle bin.
- No ask nothing, and send directly file/s & folder/s to the recycle bin.

And the same with shift+delete/supr.

why? because is possible that persons like me, push accidentally delete/supr button, and you know, that in Ubuntu when you have got selected files or folders, if you push it, are deleted immediately without asking nothing.

New adds 13/7/8:

Included: Files with more of 15* days in recycle bin, will be deleted.
*You can change 5-10-15-20-30 days.

In Ubuntu, you don't know the time that the files can be in the recycle bin, ok, if you search in Internet YES, but we want to aproximate Ubuntu to every people, and is good, that the people have near the information.

Do NOT translate name of 'Desktop' folder; make a link instead.
Written by jpka the 11 Jul 08 at 09:41. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In international Ubuntu installations, the 'Desktop' folder changes name to translated one, and in some cases, even contain space! (like 'Рабочий стол' for Russian).
While it is "normal" for Windows users which turn to Ubuntu, it has disadvantages:
- Navigation via terminal and keyboard to such folders is very hard and confusing.
- Navigation via ASCII terminal to such folders is impossible.
- Some programs, after installing, tries to create links in 'Desktop' folder, which not exist.
- When folder name contains space, it is hard or impossible to write scripts correctly.
- it looks like pulled from Windows.
To resolve it, I suggest never change 'Desktop' name, but create localized link to it.

Search "Totem" and "totem" tags and you get different results.

Or clicking "Tags" vs. "tags" gives different results (see below).

Please make tag searches case-insensitive. They are far less effective if there are two sets of results for each tag.

Don't assume users are either Total Newbs or Advanced Pros.
Written by brnetonboy the 10 Jul 08 at 20:42. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
People seem to think that there are only two types of uses: 1) Grandma, who uses email and pictures, and doesn't know the difference between a program and a hard drive.
2) Jimmy the hacker, who knows all the ins and outs of how to do stuff in Linux.

Dividing all Ubuntu users into these two categories is a huge mistake. Ubuntu is already great for these two groups of people.

This leads to the attitude that "beginners can't do that anyway, so there is no need to make it user friendly." Which is simply not true.

The first thing a computer-literate person wants to do when they install a new OS is see what it can do--yes, email and internet, but then they want to customize compiz, install a web server... do advanced stuff--like they do in windows. But it's not user friendly, and they are told that beginners shouldn't be trying to do that anyway... so they get frustrated and go back to Windows.

Administrative mode for gedit
Written by jouva the 29 Feb 08 at 07:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've found myself several times needing to manually edit a file in /etc for a package that has no front end, or otherwise needing to edit a root-owned file. It would be very nice to allow for gedit to prompt for administrative password, or have the ability to see that a file is not owned by you and allow one to choose to edit as an admin, thus gksudo'ing it.

Offer to create a separate /home partition and use existing ones
offer to create a separate /home partition (#156177)

Written by frandavid100 the 22 Mar 08 at 10:55. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A separate partition for /home has been proposed for a long time in the forums. It implies some risks, though, so based on disk size Ubiquity should estimate the amount of space that should be left for / or whether a separate partition should be made at all. Then...

-The first time an user installs Ubuntu, he is given the option to set a separate /home. This option is selected by default, with a size for each partition based on a sane guess:

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7958/firstinstallaro2.png

-Of course, he can just choose not to set a separate /home. This option will be selected by default if the results of the system test suggest that's the best thing to do.

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/6498/firstinstallbfs6.png

-Manual install is also possible. Selecting it greys out everything related to separate /home, since it's implied that the user doesn't want to be guided.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7976/firstinstallcvc2.png

-If the user set a separate /home, the next time he installs Ubuntu a new option appears and is selected by default, prompting to use the existing /home partition. All other options are still available, though.

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9034/secondinstalliq1.png

[....]

Developer comments
I have always used a separate /home as well. Keeping /home after reinstallations is one major reason which has been mitigated by ubiquity preserving /home now (I didn't test that yet, though).

Either way ubiquity (the Live CD installer) should point this out clearly.

The other reason is that I want to use it from multiple Linux installations, but that's mostly a geek use case.

I have no idea what size / and /home should have by default,
I always use 6 GB for / and the rest for /home, but if someone wants to use huge databases, that'll break.

Thus I think we should stick to our current partitioning and rather improve the UI for keeping /home. There is always manual partitioning for people who actually care.

Proper database-support for Rhythmbox/Banshee
Written by johan the 16 Mar 08 at 00:02. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Amarok has had support for mysql and postgresql for some time now, and it's only fair that we get that for some gtk-jukeboxes too. I would like this to be implemented for Rhythmbox or Banshee, or, if there already is a competent gtk-app that does this, implement it by default with easy setuptool.

Developer comments
For sure Banshee will not implement this.

More flexible Preferred Applications and behaviors configuration
Written by jmb0007 the 29 Feb 08 at 19:23. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
rhythmbox, totem, pigdin are some of the some default applications for Ubuntu.
We should find a way to allow every body to use it's own preferred applications

The "Preferred applications" and "Removable Drives and media selector" should be merged in a "Preferred Applications and behaviors".
Some new categories should be add like :
-Instant messaging
-burn cd (preferred app for Places-> CD/DVD Creator)
-Search files (preferred app for Places-> shearch for files)

There are a lot of idea on default application :
- idea #1675: Better Preferred Applications dialog
- idea #1276: Create a global preference for media formats
- idea #1150: Gnome applet with favorite applications
- idea #1686: Make VLC & Banshee default Media Players
- idea #374: Quod Libet as the default Music organizer

A centralize configurations for "Preferred Applications and behaviors" will be a good solutions for all this ideas
