Evolution should be able to hide into a tray icon.
Written by ilembitov the 3 Jul 08 at 11:47. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Evolution Mail and Calendar. New
Currently, Evolution can only be minimized to taskbar. But it would be sufficiently better if it could be minimized into a tray icon which could be used as a notifier and more.

Add tag search feature to Brainstorm
Written by ilembitov the 3 Jul 08 at 23:03. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be more convenient if a user could sort ideas accordingly to their tags and search ideas with a certain tag.

Manage duplicates in a more smart way
Written by ilembitov the 4 Jul 08 at 10:05. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
After an idea is considered to be a duplicate, feel free to remove it, but redistribute its votes to the first similar idea.
Example:
Many users have reported they want a backup system. Each idea got its votes - so people have displayed that they support this idea. So you should clean the duplicates but sum all the voices up.

unify kde, gnome HIG
Written by mangar the 28 May 08 at 06:49. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
HIG - Human interface Guidelines - how an application should behave, common location of buttons, etc.

Users needn't care about the underlying toolkits, but only about the application.
currently, gnome applications on kde, and vice versa, looks totally out of place, not only because of different themes/fonts, but also because their HIG is incompatible in many ways.

I suggest creating an OpenHIG.org, or similar site, that will publish guidelines for the free desktop HIG, and that all open desktop environments and applications will conform to it.

Easy Desktop Environment Uninstall
Written by retj the 26 Jun 08 at 17:54. Category: Others. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
=================================================
Priority: Medium
Realization: (Maybe) Easy
Improvements in terms of usability: Very High
=================================================
Let's say that Bob, an ubuntu user wants to try another ubuntu flavor, he goes to Synaptic Software and selects Install Kubuntu Desktop. Waits, Done, he's got a brand new Kubuntu DE. After one week he realizes that he doesn't want it anymore for many reasons, so he decides to uninstall it. Again, goes to Synaptic and chooses uninstall Kubuntu Desktop.
Whats his surprise? Only the meta package is removed so he has to uninstall MANUALLY EVERY SENGLE KDE APP.

Please make this work in both directions, I'd be nice to uninstall Kubuntu desktop and everything else. With just one click.

UBUNTUMIN
Written by uaneme the 2 Jul 08 at 09:25. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ok developers take a deep breath.

A DesktopGUI/WebGui/TerminalGUI (like Aptitude) for common configuration of UBUNTU machines with plugin modules for every software package outthere.

A choice to install each of the 3 seperate (for instance: a server doesn't need a DesktopGUI and perhaps also not a WebGUI)

AND make it also possible to connect a DesktopGUI over SSH to a remote system (desktop or server) as a remote assistance tool without using all the VNC bandwidth.

this would make a nice remote control possible eventually with backup and rollback of the settings and comparison tools and perhaps even more. This could even include hardware info of the remote system like disk usage, CPU, memory, the temperatures, number of connections, last boot, uptime, system log, etc.

*** But please do not forget the Aptitude style GUI ***

NAUTILUS IS FAT!!
Written by jorgevan007 the 3 Jul 08 at 18:58. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
NAUTILUS IS FAT!!
I think the appearance of the ubuntu windows are thick and all the buttons are bigger than they need to be. Customization is key here.
Nautilus needs to offer more options to make windows thinner.
The icons could be also be smaller to accommodate more content per screen. Have you noticed how one window takes way to much space because there is too much empty space in the nautilus toolbar and around the edges of the windows/icons??

Unique Ubuntu Package Managing tool
Written by retj the 2 Jul 08 at 15:31. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New

I post this idea because almost every ideas related to the installer were not voted.

I suggest mering all applications into one because they're all for the same tasks. It's pointless to have many apps to do the same thing.

====UPDATE====
I have made an abstract of this idea to say thing more clearly.

What is the Problem? we have five apps to do similar tasks when this could be integrated into ONE.

The overall point of this:

-Integrate Alien into a Graphic User Interface UUPM

-Merge Add/Romve Software into ONE Application with 2 levels advanced and simple.

-create an application that takes care of dependencies of a package that hasn't been compiled yet with just one click.

-And (MAYBE) an integration to Wine-Doors for windows Applications.

Consider this idea dont stop Voting.

==================================================================

I will bring up what Tree MendUs User said:
It is not so easy to compile a program from source, and install it, or make it available as a deb for everybody else. But it is far more available (and probably easier) than it is for programs in proprietary Operating System.
Also possible installations are ;

Improve automatic connection in Ubuntu
Written by orkerone the 3 Jul 08 at 09:43. Category: Security. Related to: Gnome. New
There's a common problem for Ubuntu users who have enabled the automatic connection. When you login manually, your password get stored somewhere and you don't need to retype it each time you start an application who needs it. But when you autologin, some applications require typing your password again. That's stupid, cause if I set up automatic connection, it was to avoid those repetitive password entries.

So, I don't know how is managed the password in Ubuntu, but please change it so that an automatic login does the same as a manual one.

Example : I installed Ubuntu on my mother's computer (and fought to do so). As she hates password and doesn't have a brilliant memory, I set up automatic login (by the way, Microsoft Windows® doesn't ask any password), and create two shortcuts on her desktop, Evolution and Firefox. She launches Evolution, and a silly keyring manager appears over her screen.

I've read forum to fix this, but the solution is removing the "login" entry in the Keyring manager, which, first, isn't very secure, but second, is too hard to change (as a newbie).

Notice there are other cases you get prompted for password in you set up automatic connection : Gnome-Do for me =/.

Installing Ubuntu in text mode......
Written by clakelly the 2 Jul 08 at 17:31. Category: Installation. Related to: Live CD installer. New
I really wanted to install Ubuntu, but the install kept going to a black screen. It also would not install on my home pc. The first pc is a dell sx270 and my home pc is one that I built with an Intel mobo, Pentium 2 DUO with 4 gig of RAM. I also have a low end nvidia card maybe 70 bucks in the home box. I tried everything I knew and finally got fed up and installed Fedora 9 which worked with all of my hardware. Fedora also has the ability to install it in text mode as part of the boot menu (great for video card problems during install). If only Utuntu developers would have added this small entry into the boot process instead of needing a seperate iso image.

INSTALLING WITHOUT ROOT
Written by elie the 3 Jul 08 at 06:49. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
There should be a standardized way to install applications to one user account only, without the need for administrator/root/superuser password authentication.

Many, many programs, from movie players to text editors to video games to business utilities, could easily be installed without exposing the whole system. So why pose a security threat for no reason?

In the spirit of Linux/UNIX, users should be able to do a lot of things without affecting the core system or other users. And users often want or need to run new programs for whatever reason.

So, there should a standard install folder for each user, such as:

/home/username/.installed-packages

The subdirectories in the folder would be like all the typical system directories, such as /usr/bin and others. These directories would also be added to the list of places that bash looks for commands.

There could also be a folder for third-party installs for all users:

/public-install

which would have chmod 777 so that any user can install and run software that other users can try too. And of course any user can mess up the folder, but that's okay because it wouldn't mess up the system, and no one would lose important documents (only downloaded programs).

Programs like apt-get or synaptic could be modified to install to these folders. The trickier part would be to set up a log of what packages are owned by who. User packaging should definately be kept separate from the classic root packaging.

And of course there are packages that should only be installed as root (such as system updates). But by making every program require root to install, it either restricts users or puts the whole system at risk. After all, it seems the only time a Linux system doesn't work is when someone did something stupid as root. So why not just avoid the problem altogether?

Fork Gnome
Written by spyyder the 14 Mar 08 at 16:26. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Gnome team is not in touch with the average user. They take the "tried and true" route on the development patch. KDE is far too bloated and unstable. Usability had not improved and easy of use remains stagnant on both end. Ubuntu seeks to make linux for human beings, but constantly relies on outside projects to provide that functionality. We need a middle ground interface that is powerful, element, and useful. I want to see new ideas and interfaces, not recycled ones. Gnome is Desktop 1.0 and its time to move the interface forward.

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.

Thank you for reading.

Brainstorm: Cascade idea status (Done, Being Worked On, etc.) to duplicate ideas
Written by HDave the 30 Jun 08 at 02:36. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently in Brainstorm if an idea is marked as "Done" or "Being Implemented" that status is not carried forth to the duplicate ideas.

This situation leaves dozens or hundreds of idea open for voting that should be closed. It's a waste of people's time and its confusing.
