Provide a way for offline Package installation
Written by davidd the 17 Jul 08 at 09:28. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Package applications with their dependencies and make them available for offline installation.

I would like to see a website where you download apps (like getdeb) _with_ their dependecies. But for me installing files offline means downloading them with the dependencies via apt. Then get them out of the apt dir and over to an usb stick. On the other machine get them into the apt dir and install the app. There may be ways of avoiding some steps but no simple way to get them without ubuntu. I would like to see a web interface which gets my files together (e.g for deluge) and puts it into a big deb.
I like apt-get and its wonderful for online installation but for offline installation you are left in the cold. Many users are still offline and linux (on cd) is purely for users with internet access. With dvds you have little chance to get what you need offline. Handling apps over on usb sticks or even shipping them with magazines is a pain.
I'm thinking about a website because it would be possible even without ubuntu on the downloading machine.
Linux is still the only os which lacks proper (easy and stupid) offline installation because of the dependecies. Linux is different i know. But this wouldn't be a problem. And again apt-get is good. I'm not flaming apt. No offense :) Just looking for a dummy way

Idea to "fix the .desktop problem "
Written by Tree MendUs the 23 Jun 08 at 04:24. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Needs clarification
Idea on how the "fix the .desktop problem" might be solved.
The ".desktop problem" is when a PROGRAM DOES NOT PROVIDE a MENU LINK when it installs (some might also include the failure to provide a desktop icon as this problem).

Idea for Solution;
Two options -

1) Work around

2) Fix

Both the work around and the fix start in similar way;

Method (in common for fix and workaround)
=====

A User could report programs with this problem to some control center (say launchpad - better name is Bug Report, or Ubuntu), fill in a checkbox or drop down select which has option "this is a desktop or menu bug".

State the program name.

The name gets put on a list.

The bug repair team may, or may not choose to make a repair to the program. But it gets listed.

Anybody can access the list, make a fix or work around, let Ubuntu and/or the program manufacture know the fix.
And provide the fix on the list (when/as it becomes available).

Make Kubuntu as sexy as Ubuntu
Written by ilembitov the 10 Jul 08 at 00:23. Category: Marketing. Related to: Kubuntu. New
At the moment Kubuntu looks more like a bastard son of Ubuntu community in comparison to Ubuntu - just look at the site. And the same stands for the distro: no cool branded artwork, no impressive highlights - just things that could get ported from Ubuntu.

But by the time 8.10 is released, many great KDE apps should be released. Not to mention KDE 4.1 (which is supposed to be mature and more feature-rich than 4.0). Others are: Amarok 2, Koffice 2(which is also really promising, especially in terms of ODF getting real-life usage), KDE4-adapted versions of K3B, Ktorrent, etc.
So the point is, that KDE-oriented distros like OpenSuSE or Mandriva can seriously break through, since they are really working hard to deliver the best user experience for KDE-lovers. And Kubuntu should also engage in this competition.

So, the point is, that not only Kubuntu itself should get more attention, but it should also be promoted as actively as Ubuntu - so the site should be refreshed, etc. Kubuntu should become equal to original Ubuntu - not just a derivative, but a key product. Please, vote, if you want Ubuntu community to work on enhancing KDE support in the distro you all love!

Change icon of USB drives when ready to eject (automatically empty buffer)
Written by svergeylen the 1 Jul 08 at 08:15. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
When you use quite often USB key, you always have to unmount them correctly to keep your data safe. When you're copying a file on a USB key, you must wait to empty the copy buffer.

I would propose to link the USB key icon to the state of the transfer :
- If there's a transfer, we can see clearly that we can not take the USB key away.
- When transfer is finished and the buffer emptied, the icon can show that the USB key can be safely removed

and thus it's not yet useful to click on "unmount", because the unmount management is totally transparent, and treated by the system. We can simply pick the USB key away because transfer is already finish and correctly closed. This will be a great innovation to simplify unmount such usual disks.

edit : Maybe the icon can stay like the same, but w can add some little sub-icon to inform of the state.

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.

Thank you for reading.

Guerrilla Marketing Campaigns
Written by Kathaer the 9 Jul 08 at 08:54. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu community should apply to "guerrilla marketing" campaigns... i mean, give free big shop bags with ubuntu logos... sponsorize short movies showing an Ubuntu screen when a computer appairs (example apple, e-bay, google and skype in the last big movies).

Give gadgets in schools, t-shirts, stickers, cds, localized ones.. in order to shake up the mind of those who have never know nothing else but mac or win... Those are confused... and don't believe that Linux is a nice system because used only by "geeks" ... but... i found it very easyier (i mean talking about installation, easy of use.. etc..) than other systems.

Tell the people in your country to spread the word "Ubuntu" and its meaning.

Currently the Eclipse packages in Ubuntu lack heavily behind other distributions like lets say Fedora.
The packages in ubuntu are outdated and so are the eclipse language plugins like CDT or Pydev.

Properly supporting this top notch IDE should give new linux developers an easier start.

Improve automatic connection in Ubuntu
Written by orkerone the 3 Jul 08 at 09:43. Category: Security. Related to: Gnome. New
There's a common problem for Ubuntu users who have enabled the automatic connection. When you login manually, your password get stored somewhere and you don't need to retype it each time you start an application who needs it. But when you autologin, some applications require typing your password again. That's stupid, cause if I set up automatic connection, it was to avoid those repetitive password entries.

So, I don't know how is managed the password in Ubuntu, but please change it so that an automatic login does the same as a manual one.

Example : I installed Ubuntu on my mother's computer (and fought to do so). As she hates password and doesn't have a brilliant memory, I set up automatic login (by the way, Microsoft Windows® doesn't ask any password), and create two shortcuts on her desktop, Evolution and Firefox. She launches Evolution, and a silly keyring manager appears over her screen.

I've read forum to fix this, but the solution is removing the "login" entry in the Keyring manager, which, first, isn't very secure, but second, is too hard to change (as a newbie).

Notice there are other cases you get prompted for password in you set up automatic connection : Gnome-Do for me =/.

Brainstorm: add "Mark this idea as 'not an idea'" - button
Written by droetker the 29 Jun 08 at 13:28. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
There are so many "ideas" that are none.

You (brainstorm team) would have less work if there were a *button* at each idea page which easily let *us* mark the idea as 'not an idea', to be reviewed by you, and you can decide if it really is one or not and set the flag

Let us help a bit.

Request to mark as 'implemented'
Written by brettalton the 11 Jun 08 at 21:22. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since there are not enough moderators to go around and constantly update all 10,000 ideas, I suggest having a 'implemented' queue, just as there is a 'duplicate' queue, where a user can mark the idea as "implemented" and a moderator has the choice to approve or decline.

Why am I suggesting this?

Because my idea "Fix "Places > Connect to Server..."" has already been implemented between GNOME 2.20 and 2.22 (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/1549/) and this gentleman's "Fix Major Bug in ShipIt Website " has been fixed as well (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6539/).

Both have stayed flagged as 'new' for over 1 month and 2 months respectively.
