Ubuntu Developer edition

I propose that Ubuntu ship Desktop, Server, --and Developer-- editions.
While the developers will undoubtedly know what they want better than I do, here's one form this dichotomy could take:
Ubuntu Developer edition should ship with gcc and build-essentials, automake, install, the entire development suite for the desktop environment it comes with, code managament tools such as bzr, and use bash or zsh or something as the default user shell. Other little things like gconf-manager should be displayed in the main menu by default, it should ship with no games. Source repositories should be enabled in apt by default. apt-get source should organize source files in a globally coherent way to minimize the time from checkout to testing. Man files should be present for every package installed on the system.
Maybe when it is installed, the user should be able to select which languages, content management systems, and IRC clients they use..
while
Ubuntu Desktop edition should ship with no development tools whatsoever, and use a shell with pre-execution command aliasing, typing suggestions (and autocorrect), and a set of nice default aliases (and other newbie friendly features), preinstalled java and moonlight right on the livecd and livedvd, and lots of nice art and games.
In conclusion, serious power users and developers have different expectations from their machines than Human Beings, just as server administrators do. I believe that recognizing this will allow Ubuntu to target both groups more effectively just as it has already enabled it to flourish in the realm of servers.

Make Nautilus Copy/Cut Follow files to Trash

When you copy/cut a file or folder and you then remove it to trash before you get to paste it somewhere, Nautilus (or whatever handles the copy/cut mechanisms) does not follow that inode (if that is the correct term) to the trash folder. This must be fixed!

Is there a possibility to include mouse trails on Ubuntu, without involving Compiz? I would love to see this feature avaiable.

make ubuntu secure!

Ubuntu is secure online but its very insecure due to physical access.
people can always hack your system by using the Live CD, and they can access files and re-install ubuntu.
When Live CD is inserted and a user wants to upgrade/re-install ubuntu should ask for a password (simillar to the sudo box that appears when you want to install software)
so what you think?

Optional Extras in Ubuntu Live Installer

From what I understand Unbuntu can't by default install several important packages because of licences or being closed source (If I'm wrong sorry).
But if you expand the LiveCD installer to include a section to ask you if you want these installed by default and ask you to read and agree to their alternative licence before it starts to download and install the basic system. If you decline these licences the installer would then install the free/GPL alternative.
The sort of packages I was thinking about would be: nVidia drivers, Adobe Flash & Sun Java etc.

Make Kubuntu and Ubuntu follow different release cycles

My opinion is, that it's not reasonable that Kubuntu follows the GNOME release cycle. With Kubuntu 8.10, the distro isn't likely to get the new versions of Amarok, Koffice, Digikam and many more. Why not let Ubuntu and Kubuntu have different schedules so that each distro could get the best?

Brainstorm: Avatars and "mod points"

On most forums, people don't read every username. They just glance at an avatar to see who's post it is. I think something like that would be good for the Brainstorm site too, so we can quickly identify commenters. Another, secondary, idea I thought would be good, is something like Red vs Blue's mod points. Essentially, along with voting an idea up or down, you could also do that to comments. Then people reading the comment threads would get a feel for the overall reputation of the people posting ideas and commenting, and an idea for how much support an individual comment has received.

Make GnuCash installed by default. Same important as Firefox, OpenOffice.

As Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols suggested:
http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS9088528047.html
"Linux has good home accounting programs such as GnuCash and KMyMoney. Either can be used to replace Quicken, and GnuCash is a decent substitute for QuickBooks as well. The Linux vendors need to start pushing these programs more in their distributions. Consumers want home finance programs, and when Linux companies don't make it as easy to find these programs as they do OpenOffice.org or Firefox, they're putting another small barrier between a potential Linux customer and a Linux customer who's willing to put down his or her credit card."
I personally tried GnuCash just recently and found it same important software as Firefox and OpenOffice. I totally enjoy multicurrency tracking of my finances. It works on windows as well. I import data from my banks electronically, have meaningful reports and graphs of my assets, expenses, etc.
It'd be direct marketing answer on "Does Quicken run on Linux?" question.

root password

Entire screen gets disabled whenever some application requires root password. This prevents from doing any other operation. It totally disables the desktop. You cannot do any other activity/task. It should allow to do other task while waiting for the root password. With Alt->Tab it should allow to use other open application or so. The screen should only "blacken" when Alt->Tab takes it back to the application asking for root password.

make Caps Lock another Return key

It would be nice to get an option in system configuration to replace the Caps Lock functionality (a relict from the old teletype printers) in favor of another Return key for the left hand.
Reason: Most people use the right hand to handle the mouse or trackball. Since both existing Return keys on a PC keyboard are on the right hand side only, you have to let go the mouse much too often to accept the defaults in on-screen menus, for example. Another return key on the left side would improve typing speed.
Of course Ubuntu cannot change the writing on the Caps Lock key.

I believe it would be a good idea to redesign the file system hierarchy in Ubuntu in a way similar to GoboLinux . Especially as a newbie migrating from Windows or Mac OS X is used to "/Applications" or "C:\Program Files" respectively, not to things like "/usr/bin" and "/usr/share". See the GoboLinux website for more reasons for this idea.

Autocompleting input in terminal

It would like to be good to realize autocompleting input in Gnome Terminal. I don't speak about Tab key, I want to see something like in OpenOffice.org when editor automatically show recently typed words and you can simply press Enter to complete input.
For example, you begin to type command. System looks at the command history, find there similary item and show it by other color. You can press Enter and select this item or you can press Up and Down for search another similary items or you can simply follow typing or press Esc if you don't want use this feature.
I think it is more usable then command history search with Ctrl+R

Typing in commands isn't really that scary, provided the typing is generally in english instead of bashisms. Plus, whether scary or not, many people have to do it some time anyways.
I propose the addition of some user friendly aliases to the system binary directories--
get -> wget
unmount _> umount
simonsays -> gksu
(I can't think of all the good ones, but those come to mind)
There's also this binary called 'install', but I never, ever use it that I'm aware of, and I don't know that I'd notice if it was replaced with an alias for apt-get install.. If it wouldn't cause problems, I'd like that.
gksu apt-get install pastebinit
could be something like:
simonsays install pastebinit
(which really should be installed by default..)
As for the simonsays thing, you wouldn't have to use it of course. Keep using your gksu. --but when I go to provide phone support for someone, it could be nice.
http://xkcd.com/149/
Although, it could also be that it would put users in the wrong mentality and should be avoided. Forcing an app to do something is /not/ the same thing as giving it more power over your system. Well, food for thought. Begin comments!
