Synaptic needs to be indexed

After adding new repositories and clicking reload,Synaptic downloads lists from servers. And after that When I search for an application in synaptic it takes to much time to find me the package.Actually its looking into the list that was downloaded.
I think indexing the package name and description after reloading the package list can improve synaptic performance.

Updated ISOs to download

Instead of suggesting a "Service Pack Like" idea, I'm suggesting to update the ISO files at Ubuntu website and mirrors, that way, we can download the ISO with the latest packages and the latest fixes already out of the box.

Support kubuntu and kde the way you support ubuntu and gnome

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.
Thank you for reading.

Quicker, more efficient updates

There should be a more efficient format for apt-get (or the update manager) to download updates. Firstly, it should only need to download the files that have changed in a package (not the whole package), and secondly, it should download a DIFF of those files.
My latest update contains a 34.2 WHOPPING MB update to the linux restricted modules. Here's the changelog:
* Fix broadcom Makefile to get correct objects from split-module.
I'm downloading 34.2Mb just to get a *Makefile update*??? I don't even use any broadcom stuff. Even if I did, I probably wouldn't care enough about a Makefile to make it worthwhile downloading 34.2Mb!

Have moderators who filter out brainstorms before people can vote on them

Right now there are too many brainstorms to be sifted through and made sense of, spreading the votes of any reasonable person too thin.
Brainstorm should select a group of moderators to filter out ideas that are not feasible, not ideas, bug reports, or poorly worded before they are able to be voted on by the general registered user populace.
It will make Brainstorm less cluttered and allow people to decide on a few well-crafted and feasible brainstorms instead of having to make sense of the mess of 10s of thousands of brainstorms that have no hope of ever coming to fruition ("Include all proprietary codecs by default," "Make Ubuntu better," "Fix this upstream Gnome problem").

"Administrator mode" for Dolphin/Nautilus

ATM it is very uneasy to edit system files as root with a GUI.
E.g. if you want to edit files in /etc, /boot/ etc... you have to go to the console, get root and edit the files either with nanno or with "sudo gedit" (GNOME) or "sudo kate" (KDE).
It would be a good idea to integrate a "Administrator mode" button or something like this with policykit backend into nautilus/dolphin.
I think for nautilus is something lika that underways, but for dolphin not.
To access root-only directories a question while entering the dir would be ok, but for editing files e.g this is not enough.
Other solution would be - every time I don't have the rights to do something (save /etc/samba/smb.conf e.g.) the systema asks me for the password.

A simple and elegant way to differenciate apps launched as root

I have a simple and elegant solution to easily differentiate an application launched as root (Adept Manager, Nautilus, Konqueror, etc.) and an other one : I use the same color scheme for both users but I slightly colorize the "standart background" (the textedit/lineedit... background color) of the root color theme (salmon color for me).
This way, all my applications looks the same but I can immediately see which application is in root mode (and be carefull of what I do with them !)
I use KDE but I think this idea can apply to Gnome too.

Advertise services with avahi (zeroconf) by default

What does this mean practically?
It means that if you connect two Ubuntu (other OSes may work too) computers they can e.g. share files via resources->network using sftp, ftp, samba... All with no configuration, just by plugging the cable.
How is it done?
When a new service is installed, also add the relative service file to avahi, so that it will appear on locally connected machines. Or alternatively have the service contact avahi via dbus when it starts.
Secondly add support in nautilus for _smb._tcp service type.
Avahi is already installed in Ubuntu.

Option to automatically login AND THEN LOCK

I'd like to have Ubuntu log me in automatically, but still require my password to begin use.
Rationale: I don't like waiting. Why can't my gnome desktop start up BEFORE I enter my password? In the unlikely event that someone else was to use my computer, they could be given the option to logout (without knowing my password) after the initial start up.
Considerations: If I did happen to have applications like Gaim start up automatically on login (which could require immediate attention), maybe these should be delayed until after I've entered my password.

Make Drag&Drop possible everywhere in GNOME

Drag&Drop is such a intuitive and simple action - it must be promoted.
There are many things that already work in Ubuntu/GNOME/KDE with Drag&Drop, but there is much that can be improved:
- DnD an image from Firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not a textfile with the link to the homepage.
- DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the Firefox address bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
- DnD of devices onto the Pastebin should unmount them (like OSX)
- DnD of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
- fix the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesn't-accept-DnD-files issue: Launchpad bug #61237
- DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
- DnD a file into an edit box should insert a file:// link - KDE has this; Idea #3027
from Idea #4105:
- DnD Attachement from Thunderbird to Nautilus
- DnD Files From File-Roller to Nautilus
- DnD Picture from Nautilus to OOo
...and many more, please submit your ideas, I'll put them into the description!

Allow Root Login

I started my computer life on single user systems where I was essentially always root. AppleDOS, DOS, Windows 3.x, OS/2 all allowed me to control my system without sudo or su.
I understand the risks, I understand why some users should not be root. I understand I cannot use ubuntu without this feature.

Typing in commands isn't really that scary, provided the typing is generally in english instead of bashisms. Plus, whether scary or not, many people have to do it some time anyways.
I propose the addition of some user friendly aliases to the system binary directories--
get -> wget
unmount _> umount
simonsays -> gksu
(I can't think of all the good ones, but those come to mind)
There's also this binary called 'install', but I never, ever use it that I'm aware of, and I don't know that I'd notice if it was replaced with an alias for apt-get install.. If it wouldn't cause problems, I'd like that.
gksu apt-get install pastebinit
could be something like:
simonsays install pastebinit
(which really should be installed by default..)
As for the simonsays thing, you wouldn't have to use it of course. Keep using your gksu. --but when I go to provide phone support for someone, it could be nice.
http://xkcd.com/149/
Although, it could also be that it would put users in the wrong mentality and should be avoided. Forcing an app to do something is /not/ the same thing as giving it more power over your system. Well, food for thought. Begin comments!

Make Rhythmbox recognized availabe album art

Rhythmbox never recognized available album art from newly added song. It always searched online like amason etc for album art whether album art is already available to the track.
The idea is if album art is availabe or associated with track it use it and not searched in online.
