Unfortunately there are many people who get scammed into paying for DRM-crippled media which is heavily restricted.
I have heard about people who got scammed and wasted lots of money, then reformatted their computer and none of the media they had payed for would play, and others who were unable transfer the media to their portable media players, or use the media in their car stereo.

Therefor I recommend to warn users about the dangers of DRM.

I have made a a couple of conceptual mockups. The basic idea is to make the user aware that the media he have is DRM-crippled, and to inform him about the DRM and how it restricts him.

This is just a conceptual mockup. It could be better and more informative. Perhaps less intrusive.
* Browsing files with Nautilus (notice the icon/emblem)
* Checking file properties in Nautilus
* Warning in Rhythmbox (if playback failed)
* File properties in Rhythmbox
* Icon in Totem (non-obtrusive)
* Warning in Totem (if playback failed)
* Error in VLC (if playback failed)

Ubuntu by default supports deb although there is still debate whether its best versus RPM,PISI,rPath, conary, portage(gentoo) so many http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_management_system.
I think DEB is better and does job well.ubuntu should either build new packaging system or should improve the way packages and dependencies are handles.ubuntu can Make New Packaging system as newer os like Foresight linux has Done. There should be "Zero Dependency" when installing applications and programs like windows, when user wants an application to install in windows he has to just run application installer(exe like deb) nothing else no internet etc although software is downloaded from internet/other source. Its even hard when compiling a software from source,./configure,make install(user gets error).A package should contain all dependencies(necessary files) to install.uninstalling should also be made easier too.
Imagine a no-internet zone in office,no internet at home how a guy can install package with single package?.90% of windows users are not aware of dependencies in linux filesystem or newbie/novice too.i wanted to install gnomedo which is 127kb size and has dependency of 5k(not on system).
Make it experimental installer then evolve it as Full featured package management.

Today automatix was reborn, less than 6 month ubuntu sighed when they thought automatix died, the real problem is that there isnt a very nice way to install bunch of programs which are most popular and most used even in linux, ubuntu should make a meta package either through synaptic or add/remove to make it easier for installing those programs and especially "codecs Meta package" long told and requested by many linux users community and new users asking "dead-easy-for-installing codecs/oneclick installation of codecs".
there are reasons why people want to use automatix(ultamatix now on)
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ultamatix-The-New-Automatix-90801.shtml
make a survey or simple make those programs installation
very very easy like making a Package like
Multimedia codecs meta package(all audio/video codecs and libdvdcss2)
Games metapackage( check this list
• Return to the Castle of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
• America's Army
• Alien Arena 2007
• Amoebax
• AssaultCube
• ATanks
• Nexuiz
• Glest
• Tremulous
• The Battle for Wesnoth
• Open Arena
• Warsow
• Vdrift
• BzFlag
• Orbital Sniper
• Neverball
• Urban Terror
• Vegastrike
• Scorched 3D
• FooBillard
• Wormux
• World Of Padman
• Frozen Bubble
• Flightgear
• Globulation 2
• UFO: Alien Invasion
• Warzone 2100
make these games available in repository or improve compatiblity if they still exist.making meta game package also should allow selecting individual games to be selected for installation and can be installed any time even after os reinstall.
Audio and video players(ilife alternative call it ilinux? or something else)
similarly others too.simplicity should be there in installation of programs.bringing popular software into linux/ubuntu will improve people's POV(pointofview) for linux.

There are many misconceptions about Linux and the open source operating systems that are preventing many people from adopting this technologies. A way to solve this could be launching some kind of global Linux campaign in order to emphasize the benefits of the Linux operating systems. For instance:

- Free. Because we believe operating systems should be free. No licensing fees
- Free Upgrades. New features are free
- Friendly community
- Developers who listen. If you need something, it is more likely you will be able to get the feature added
- Large amount of high quality, free software
- Find the linux OS for you, each has different advantages, optimised towards different users.
- More customisable. Find the desktop for you
- Runs Openoffice & firefox
- Manages your software for you. You no longer need to worry about checking for updates yourself. Linux does it automatically for you, and lets u choose what to upgrade
- Developer friendly

More than specifying a lot of benefits, the idea would be concentrating in the most beneficial aspects, while fighting the most widespread wrong ideas about Linux.

As this campaign would benefit all the parties using in Linux operating systems, it could be funded by a group of them. This would help reduce the economic cost of this campaign to Canonical/Ubuntu. Moreover, as one of the most common misconceptions about Linux is that there is an excessive fragmentation, this would help giving a unified and strong view of Linux.

Many thanks to Auzy for the reformulation of the benefits!

I think that Ubuntu definitely should have a more seamless integration between the graphic environment and the core system. I don’t know much about these things, but there appears to be some issues between GUI and system permissions.

For instance, if I want to install an application that came with a .sh installation script, I have to start .sh file from a console. Why not implement a way to start it by double click of a mouse, like novice users would expect?
Or another example, when I want to for instance change ownership of a file by using a right-click menu in graphic interface (instead of console and chown) it gives me an error message that I don’t have sufficient privileges for that. So I have to use sudo Nautilus to start Nautilus in root mode to be able to change ownership over files. Wouldn’t it be so much easier and clearer if Ubuntu would simply ask for my root pass and make changes without having to run the whole Nautilus in sudo?

[-56] Linux needs to be more like Windows/OS X

***Please read before you vote down, I know that may be difficult for some of you Microsoft/Apple hating fanatics.

***I would like to thank those of you who bothered to provide reasonable feedback even if you down-voted. See, its not that hard!

That's right ladies and gentlemen, the first step at offering usability is to offer compatibility. Bring an end to this antiquated ideology that Linux is somehow "different", because its not. Shuttleworth challenges us that in two years Ubuntu will surpass Apple in usability. How exactly is that supposed to happen if every upcoming release brings nothing new to the table. Why aren't the developers willing to try something NEW, RADICAL, and SPONTANEOUS???

Tools like GTK are not good enough anymore. Why cling to the design fundamentals of projects not willing to change their interface approach. Linux in reality is either gnome or kde. No distro wants to evolve beyond that. I once suggested an idea to fork Gnome, but that was too radical for you. I suggested that Ubuntu publish human interface guidelines, but that wasn't good enough. One of the top ideas is to hold a contest at DeviantArt, and that was brushed to the side after 4 months. (Its in the 'work in progress' but still ignored, read the dev comments!) Seriously, the Gnome, Openoffice, and Ubuntu developers have the aesthetic sensibilities of a cinder blog.

Update: Not trying to troll, just a wake-up call. Based on the voting I see you guys aren't interested in making a good OS. What linux is today: Theme + Some Program's + Package System, all bundles into a downloadable.iso. WTF? Where is the innovation in that?? Every three months a new distro, for what purpose, all of them useless. You're right, linux is about choice, the choice to suck, be incompatible, be difficult to use, and just plain frustrating. But go ahead and keep submitting those ideas mates, because may be in 10-15 years, Ubuntu will have caught up to the rest of the world.

You want ideas? HERE!
Why no integration between openoffice and firefox/thunderbird?
Why such poor enterprise support?
Why no unified short-cuts?
Why no simplified way to install/remove programs (not synaptic!)?
Why no common GUI design elements between applications?
Why should the end-user care about what a dependency is?
The end-user should NEVER have to open terminal and know what 'sudo' or 'apt-get' means.
Why is networking so difficult?
What purpose did pulse audio serve if its not functional?
Why not use compiz fusion to enhance the user experience?
What purpose does it serve to include application that don't "talk" to each other, or integrate?
Why do you use the default Gnome design?
Why do you keep using default gnome programs instead of creating a unique 'Ubuntu' experience?
Why are the fonts ugly as sin?
How come Ubuntu won't use simpler terminology to describe system actions?
Why doesn't the system use more visual/audio cues?

....Guess what? These aren't ideas, they are fundamental design flaws in the entire linux community because developers have no idea what the end-user needs.

When we move data(files) there should be neat feature :
when you move files with the same name, you should be prompted to either overwrite the files, rename the new files or cancel the operation.
Skip file(s) can also be great, also prompt when duplicate file is seen with same file name also show information like Size and date of creation/modification of both files,if possible.

As said in other posts to support driver installation from internet,a jockey framework is being developed.I like the concept very much and i think it will be the first of its kind in linux, but there should be three more improvements to it will be added advantage
1)Make jockey to handle other type of hardware also like network,audio/video device drivers, more and more with each release.
2)Make it possible to install drivers from local media/drive not just internet if i have the drivers CD media with INF file.
3)Ability to request for driver for new device drivers(through form?).maintain central device/hw database that will be compatible with other linux distributions also if possible.
