No to "Dependency hell",zero dependency package management
Written by dragoninsane the 20 Jul 08 at 15:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu by default supports deb although there is still debate whether its best versus RPM,PISI,rPath, conary, portage(gentoo) so many http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_management_system.
I think DEB is better and does job well.ubuntu should either build new packaging system or should improve the way packages and dependencies are handles.ubuntu can Make New Packaging system as newer os like Foresight linux has Done. There should be "Zero Dependency" when installing applications and programs like windows, when user wants an application to install in windows he has to just run application installer(exe like deb) nothing else no internet etc although software is downloaded from internet/other source. Its even hard when compiling a software from source,./configure,make install(user gets error).A package should contain all dependencies(necessary files) to install.uninstalling should also be made easier too.
Imagine a no-internet zone in office,no internet at home how a guy can install package with single package?.90% of windows users are not aware of dependencies in linux filesystem or newbie/novice too.i wanted to install gnomedo which is 127kb size and has dependency of 5k(not on system).
Make it experimental installer then evolve it as Full featured package management.

I dont know how it came into brainstorm but seriously its hurting other user ideas,People getting Excited to vote on ideas with this bug,and its affecting good ideas that maybe actually better than that bug prone idea.By seeing the tremendous response to idea everyone is voting on it and commenting.
ideas like this
Idea #10556: Include GUFW as a GUI firewall frontend.
and i suppose this too.
Idea #11133: Make gnome-system-monitor more accessible via CTRL-ALT-DELETE,although i already expressed similar idea to support keyboard shortcut for system monitor it got less response.

DRM warning
Written by Eldmannen the 13 Jul 08 at 19:15. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Unfortunately there are many people who get scammed into paying for DRM-crippled media which is heavily restricted.
I have heard about people who got scammed and wasted lots of money, then reformatted their computer and none of the media they had payed for would play, and others who were unable transfer the media to their portable media players, or use the media in their car stereo.

Therefor I recommend to warn users about the dangers of DRM.

I have made a a couple of conceptual mockups. The basic idea is to make the user aware that the media he have is DRM-crippled, and to inform him about the DRM and how it restricts him.

This is just a conceptual mockup. It could be better and more informative. Perhaps less intrusive.
* Browsing files with Nautilus (notice the icon/emblem)
* Checking file properties in Nautilus
* Warning in Rhythmbox (if playback failed)
* File properties in Rhythmbox
* Icon in Totem (non-obtrusive)
* Warning in Totem (if playback failed)
* Error in VLC (if playback failed)

Use free artwork in Ubuntu
Written by Eldmannen the 14 Jul 08 at 20:44. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is a free software operating system.

Unfortunately some of the artwork is not free. :(
The 'human-icon-theme' and 'tangerine-icon-theme' packages are not free.

We should strive to have free artwork to go along with our free software. Artwork that is compatible with the four freedoms. Artwork that can be used in the creation of derivative art, mixing, improving, altering, modifying.

Written by dragoninsane the 22 Mar 08 at 14:36. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
it should be improved,i think avast should be supported
in repo, made aware to general public.Avast is most
popular av for linux, win.but Clamav is also good i dont
know which will be people's choice.clamav is good
but doesnt have best support also it doesnt have gui.
Include context menu for files/folders for virus scan.
scan with Clamav/avast wud be gr8.also clamav should be
available in repo.

Include GUFW as a GUI firewall frontend.
Written by rsingh the 1 Jul 08 at 11:06. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of the things included in Hardy was ufw (Uncomplicated firewall wall), but everything has to be done via CLI. There is a very nice GUI frontend being developed for it and it would be nice if it is bundled as a default package.

Links to the project:

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.

Thank you for reading.

I want Ubuntu
Written by Jota the 9 Jul 08 at 00:02. Category: Installation. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
I used Ubuntu for a few minutes in a friend's computer and researched it on the internet.

I really like the principles and the idea, but after doing a little probing, I still have a few doubts that wont let me go further.

With Ubuntu, can I use the same programs I am used to or will I have to use all new programs?

Can I play my usual PC games?

In short: What do I gain in terms of interface and usage and what do I loose? Do I loose anything? As far as I know, I want Ubuntu, but I'm scared... If I go trough with this transition, what do I have to get used to?

Wine, make a list of compatible programs, report through wine compatilbilty issues
Written by dragoninsane the 9 Jul 08 at 21:30. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Games is the main issue why people want to run wine, but
only few hit or miss logic works.
There isnt a database or list of programs that run fine in ubuntu or linux for that matter(100% sure works?).lets
1)create a database of programs that wine developers can guarantee, well atleast assure it will "just work" kind of stuff.
2)Report about incompatibilty about programs that dont work Right-out-of-box in wine, yes we sometime need an application that works same as in win and ubuntu without any fuss with virtualization.
3)we can Report also errors with graphics card/games that dont work with wine or general bugs in wine Right from ubuntu desktop through some method, just as we report through apport or integrate apport into wine.
apport should get wine details such as version, etc
This way i hope so programs get fixed that natively run in win.shrunk the title sorry.

10 Go required for "/" at the installation with the partition editor
Written by fraiddo the 18 Apr 08 at 21:31. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hello,

I don't understand why 20 Go is required for the "/" when we want to use the partition editor at the installation of Hardy Heron...

I propose to fix the limit at 10 Go.

ubuntu should work on cheap hardware also
Written by dragoninsane the 30 Mar 08 at 14:46. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
i have cheap hardware(not cheap) but not popular brands
for my tv tuner(analog) and network (techcom supertv and
hanzou silan Ethernet card).these type of hardware is widely
available in India and Asia.people in Us and Europe use
most popular brands like net gear,dlink,3dom,broad com etc.
although motherboard people well known brands like Intel
and amd are known to everyone but new users dont know
much about unpopular brands and fall trap to buy them like
me.i thought most of the hardware will work.every user is
frustrated with linux and its hardware support.just saw
old review of ubuntu on dell pcs review in BBC.COM
"average user/they say linux doesn't work on most hardware "
"make it a myth not fact".

choose the new theme of Ubuntu by Brainstorm.
Written by nq6 the 2 Jul 08 at 16:35. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

The Ubutnu is a popular distribution, and the choice of their standard theme should be made by all by voting. And not by a small group. The community can elect the theme through the Ubuntu Brainstorm.

For the choice of a new theme that is the satisfaction of the majority that idea is essential.

---------------------
Edited:
Initially thank you all. This idea may help it to developers in the choice, and can have an extra theme.

Can serve as a basis for changes in the theme chosen by the team of Ubuntu, even if the popular themes are not adopted.

This idea will help.

Put Computer, Network, Home and Trash on the desktop by default
Written by Nxx the 1 Jul 08 at 16:55. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Some people would be more comfortable with this stuff. It also may help migration of new users from other operating systems.

For those who wants to hide these icons, it would be a good solution to add a special tab into gnome-display-propertis where users could check and uncheck icons they want on the desktop.

what happened !
Written by yurek the 8 Jul 08 at 20:56. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
Recently I had problem with my touchpad, it become unstable, some dark probleme !! I don't know, but I must restart my computer to make it work again.
I think this probleme can be detected by some program who ensure some application work properly. For exemple if mouse/keyboard not work, execute somethink ( restart mouse detection or keyboard detection, screen detection ) .
Some Daemon can be work and detect this problemes.

I have this idea because some programs are very basic and not be designed if there are problems ( mouse manager ).

Thanks.

make the most of the OpenGL
Written by dragoninsane the 5 Jul 08 at 14:10. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opengl
Make use openGL to the fullest
*OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) is a standard specification defining a cross-language cross-platform API for writing applications that produce 2D and 3D computer graphics.

*-OpenGL can beat directx, although i dont know technicality
of both but still.Mac uses most of OpenGL in boot, graphics etc.Directx is used by microsoft to render graphics but here is comparision
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_OpenGL_and_Direct3D
and opengl can perform to the level of directx
There was recent talk of uses OpenGL face browser, although i don't know its fate.give a full support, develop opengl based applications.

Shipit shouldn't require a Launchpad account
Written by Jadd the 5 Jul 08 at 15:24. Category: Marketing. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
If you want a free CD of Ubuntu Desktop or Server Edition, you need to have a Launchpad.net account:
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/login

Launchpad.net is a site for those who contribute to open source projects. Why should it be polluted with accounts that are never going to be used? Why should people who have potentially never used Linux before be forced to register on Launchpad.net?
The ability to "view or change existing requests" should not be tied to Launchpad, the canonical shop would be a better place for that in my opinion.

Do not install Ekiga by default   forum
Written by olskar the 20 Jun 08 at 21:04. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I dont think Ekiga is used by many people, perhaps we should consider removing it from the cd in favour for other software or more drivers?

I made up a quickvote at the ubuntuforums to see if I was the only one not using Ekiga.

Check the thread posted here for information and discussion.
