When clicking on the "computer" place in nautilus (Poste de travail in french)
We actually see a mess of icons, not at all ordered.
It would be GREAT to have subdivisions like "Hard Drives", "CD/DVD Drives" "Removable Devices" (or "external storage devices" or so) and "Network Places" or even more, and this with useful details
-For the hard drives and external storage devices: the filesystem of the different partitions that are displayed and a disk usage bar showing used and free space below the icon, possibility of setting the label of the partition by renaming the icon, etc.
-For cd/dvd drives, it could show if the tray is empty or not, if the disk is blank or used, with or without multisession, etc.
-For network places, maybe it could show samba shares on other computers or workgroups, and provide a tool for easily mounting shared folders with smbfs or so

[24] Subtitles for Top Level Directory Names

This is a new method of approaching this idea: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6243/

#6243 suggests that the top level folders (bin, boot, dev, etc...) should be renamed to be more self-explanatory. However, the ensuing discussion made it quite clear that this is very difficult to implement.

My suggestion is not to change the names of these folders directly, but add the capability for them to be subtitled. This will therefore make them more self-explanatory, without breaking basic functionality.

Such subtitles do not have to be long:
- bin = "programs"
- boot = "boot files"
- dev = "devices"
- etc = "configuration files"
- lib = "library files"
- home = "user files"
- media = "drives and storage"
- mnt = "mounted drives"
- proc = "processes"
- root = "administrator files"
- sbin = "program administration"
- tmp = "temporary files"
- usr = "program files"

This could be done simply in the GUI, without major changes needed to the underlying OS.

[810] Support kubuntu and kde the way you support ubuntu and gnome

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.

Thank you for reading.

I think that Ubuntu definitely should have a more seamless integration between the graphic environment and the core system. I don’t know much about these things, but there appears to be some issues between GUI and system permissions.

For instance, if I want to install an application that came with a .sh installation script, I have to start .sh file from a console. Why not implement a way to start it by double click of a mouse, like novice users would expect?
Or another example, when I want to for instance change ownership of a file by using a right-click menu in graphic interface (instead of console and chown) it gives me an error message that I don’t have sufficient privileges for that. So I have to use sudo Nautilus to start Nautilus in root mode to be able to change ownership over files. Wouldn’t it be so much easier and clearer if Ubuntu would simply ask for my root pass and make changes without having to run the whole Nautilus in sudo?

The community can elect the theme through the Ubuntu Brainstorm.

For the choice of a new theme that is the satisfaction of the majority that idea is essential.

---------------------
Edited:
Initially thank you all.

Unfortunately there are many people who get scammed into paying for DRM-crippled media which is heavily restricted.
I have heard about people who got scammed and wasted lots of money, then reformatted their computer and none of the media they had payed for would play, and others who were unable transfer the media to their portable media players, or use the media in their car stereo.

Therefor I recommend to warn users about the dangers of DRM.

I have made a a couple of conceptual mockups. The basic idea is to make the user aware that the media he have is DRM-crippled, and to inform him about the DRM and how it restricts him.

This is just a conceptual mockup. It could be better and more informative. Perhaps less intrusive.
* Browsing files with Nautilus (notice the icon/emblem)
* Checking file properties in Nautilus
* Warning in Rhythmbox (if playback failed)
* File properties in Rhythmbox
* Icon in Totem (non-obtrusive)
* Warning in Totem (if playback failed)
* Error in VLC (if playback failed)
