No to "Dependency hell",zero dependency package management
Written by dragoninsane the 20 Jul 08 at 15:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu by default supports deb although there is still debate whether its best versus RPM,PISI,rPath, conary, portage(gentoo) so many http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_management_system.
I think DEB is better and does job well.ubuntu should either build new packaging system or should improve the way packages and dependencies are handles.ubuntu can Make New Packaging system as newer os like Foresight linux has Done. There should be "Zero Dependency" when installing applications and programs like windows, when user wants an application to install in windows he has to just run application installer(exe like deb) nothing else no internet etc although software is downloaded from internet/other source. Its even hard when compiling a software from source,./configure,make install(user gets error).A package should contain all dependencies(necessary files) to install.uninstalling should also be made easier too.
Imagine a no-internet zone in office,no internet at home how a guy can install package with single package?.90% of windows users are not aware of dependencies in linux filesystem or newbie/novice too.i wanted to install gnomedo which is 127kb size and has dependency of 5k(not on system).
Make it experimental installer then evolve it as Full featured package management.

automatix to altamatix rebirth should ubuntu care
Written by dragoninsane the 25 Jul 08 at 15:45. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Today automatix was reborn, less than 6 month ubuntu sighed when they thought automatix died, the real problem is that there isnt a very nice way to install bunch of programs which are most popular and most used even in linux, ubuntu should make a meta package either through synaptic or add/remove to make it easier for installing those programs and especially "codecs Meta package" long told and requested by many linux users community and new users asking "dead-easy-for-installing codecs/oneclick installation of codecs".
there are reasons why people want to use automatix(ultamatix now on)
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ultamatix-The-New-Automatix-90801.shtml
make a survey or simple make those programs installation
very very easy like making a Package like
Multimedia codecs meta package(all audio/video codecs and libdvdcss2)
Games metapackage( check this list
• Return to the Castle of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
• America's Army
• Alien Arena 2007
• Amoebax

Include GUFW as a GUI firewall frontend.
Written by rsingh the 1 Jul 08 at 11:06. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of the things included in Hardy was ufw (Uncomplicated firewall wall), but everything has to be done via CLI. There is a very nice GUI frontend being developed for it and it would be nice if it is bundled as a default package.

Partner with other distros to launch advertising campaign about Linux
Written by granadajose the 6 Jun 08 at 14:04. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are many misconceptions about Linux and the open source operating systems that are preventing many people from adopting this technologies. A way to solve this could be launching some kind of global Linux campaign in order to emphasize the benefits of the Linux operating systems. For instance:

- Free. Because we believe operating systems should be free. No licensing fees
- Free Upgrades. New features are free
- Friendly community
- Developers who listen. If you need something, it is more likely you will be able to get the feature added
- Large amount of high quality, free software
- Find the linux OS for you, each has different advantages, optimised towards different users.
- More customisable. Find the desktop for you
- Runs Openoffice & firefox
- Manages your software for you. You no longer need to worry about checking for updates yourself. Linux does it automatically for you, and lets u choose what to upgrade
- Developer friendly

More than specifying a lot of benefits, the idea would be concentrating in the most beneficial aspects, while fighting the most widespread wrong ideas about Linux.

As this campaign would benefit all the parties using in Linux operating systems, it could be funded by a group of them. This would help reduce the economic cost of this campaign to Canonical/Ubuntu. Moreover, as one of the most common misconceptions about Linux is that there is an excessive fragmentation, this would help giving a unified and strong view of Linux.

Many thanks to Auzy for the reformulation of the benefits!

Better cooperation between GUI and permissions
Written by morbius the 23 Jul 08 at 17:38. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that Ubuntu definitely should have a more seamless integration between the graphic environment and the core system. I don’t know much about these things, but there appears to be some issues between GUI and system permissions.

For instance, if I want to install an application that came with a .sh installation script, I have to start .sh file from a console. Why not implement a way to start it by double click of a mouse, like novice users would expect?
Or another example, when I want to for instance change ownership of a file by using a right-click menu in graphic interface (instead of console and chown) it gives me an error message that I don’t have sufficient privileges for that. So I have to use sudo Nautilus to start Nautilus in root mode to be able to change ownership over files. Wouldn’t it be so much easier and clearer if Ubuntu would simply ask for my root pass and make changes without having to run the whole Nautilus in sudo?

DRM warning
Written by Eldmannen the 13 Jul 08 at 19:15. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Unfortunately there are many people who get scammed into paying for DRM-crippled media which is heavily restricted.
I have heard about people who got scammed and wasted lots of money, then reformatted their computer and none of the media they had payed for would play, and others who were unable transfer the media to their portable media players, or use the media in their car stereo.

Therefor I recommend to warn users about the dangers of DRM.

I have made a a couple of conceptual mockups. The basic idea is to make the user aware that the media he have is DRM-crippled, and to inform him about the DRM and how it restricts him.

This is just a conceptual mockup. It could be better and more informative. Perhaps less intrusive.
* Browsing files with Nautilus (notice the icon/emblem)
* Checking file properties in Nautilus
* Warning in Rhythmbox (if playback failed)
* File properties in Rhythmbox
* Icon in Totem (non-obtrusive)
* Warning in Totem (if playback failed)
* Error in VLC (if playback failed)

Bring Dtrace like application support to linux/gnome
Written by dragoninsane the 24 Jul 08 at 04:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
sorry title should say framework,
DTrace is comprehensive dynamic tracing framework created by Sun Microsystems for troubleshooting system and application problems in real time
Officially developed by Sun,although DTrace is implemented in Mac os x technology,Dtrace allow to trace software crashes and software improper functioning,it will allow to inspect the causes and enable to make it stable, crash 'n' burn proof.atleast we need alternative to it in gnome/linux if it cant be ported.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DTrace

http://opensolaris.org/os/community/dtrace/
Linux haters are ranting about support for DTrace doesnt exist,i think its time somebody spends time in making it available in linux too.

I saw this blueprint from launchpad but it is not yet approved. I think this is a good venue for talking and helping ubuntu users live. Below is the project summary lifter from (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuLiveChatSupport)

The UbuntuLiveChatSupport aims to provide an interface to communicate to other ubuntu users with the same language & location, as well as to connect to the official ubuntu channel in freenode.net. It also aims to get live chat support from ubuntu users right into the desktop menu, via "System > Help > Live Chat Support".

choose the new theme of Ubuntu by Brainstorm.
Written by nq6 the 2 Jul 08 at 16:35. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

The Ubutnu is a popular distribution, and the choice of their standard theme should be made by all by voting. And not by a small group. The community can elect the theme through the Ubuntu Brainstorm.

For the choice of a new theme that is the satisfaction of the majority that idea is essential.

---------------------
Edited:
Initially thank you all. This idea may help it to developers in the choice, and can have an extra theme.

Can serve as a basis for changes in the theme chosen by the team of Ubuntu, even if the popular themes are not adopted.

This idea will help.

While requesting features to the open source community which consist mainly of free workers, we may often forget to say how much we like Ubuntu and look like costumers requesting.

So you can say thank you to the thousands of developers and users who gave their time by voting for this article :)

Appeal::"Please stop hating windows based applications, they are good application but on wrong os/platform,dont vote negative without reading or understanding about idea."
just have glance of xnview an application for windows(shucks only for windows but it is freeware)created by single person.
XnView is an efficient multimedia viewer, browser and converter.although its freeware
it provides out of box photo editing right in your finger tips, only for windows.http://i36.tinypic.com/wcl0tv.jpg

Copy of mail:I sent to request the maker for supporting linux version
Hi, firstly iam glad to see a freeware for windows with such nifty, handy and unique features right in my context menu.next why do i only have this software lying in windows cant it be ported to linux or ubuntu.better if you can make a version for linux.I love to see your software available to wide audience.
ubuntu can ask developer to get a version running in linux or better ubuntu first.well picasa is good but not xnview, its handy to convert, view in context menu of file.
1)allows convertion of images to bunch of popular formats
2)small thumbnail in context menu
3)shows file dimensions etc
4)upload to imageshack
5)set as wallpaper>>center etc

Do not install Ekiga by default   forum
Written by olskar the 20 Jun 08 at 21:04. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I dont think Ekiga is used by many people, perhaps we should consider removing it from the cd in favour for other software or more drivers?

I made up a quickvote at the ubuntuforums to see if I was the only one not using Ekiga.

Check the thread posted here for information and discussion.

ShipIT: Only one CD per Address.
Written by loneowais the 24 Jul 08 at 14:01. Category: Others. Related to: launchpad.net. New
Ever since I told my friends & classmates about free Ubuntu Disks....They are on a mission. They keep making new launchpad accounts & keep requesting CD's for them. This costs canonical too much. I'm sure there must be thousands of irresponsible people like this.

Please detect duplicate addresses in launchpad accounts & send only one disk to one address.

Linux needs to be more like Windows/OS X
Written by spyyder the 24 Jul 08 at 03:07. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
***Please read before you vote down, I know that may be difficult for some of you Microsoft/Apple hating fanatics.

***I would like to thank those of you who bothered to provide reasonable feedback even if you down-voted. See, its not that hard!

That's right ladies and gentlemen, the first step at offering usability is to offer compatibility. Bring an end to this antiquated ideology that Linux is somehow "different", because its not. Shuttleworth challenges us that in two years Ubuntu will surpass Apple in usability. How exactly is that supposed to happen if every upcoming release brings nothing new to the table. Why aren't the developers willing to try something NEW, RADICAL, and SPONTANEOUS???

Tools like GTK are not good enough anymore. Why cling to the design fundamentals of projects not willing to change their interface approach. Linux in reality is either gnome or kde. No distro wants to evolve beyond that. I once suggested an idea to fork Gnome, but that was too radical for you. I suggested that Ubuntu publish human interface guidelines, but that wasn't good enough. One of the top ideas is to hold a contest at DeviantArt, and that was brushed to the side after 4 months. (Its in the 'work in progress' but still ignored, read the dev comments!) Seriously, the Gnome, Openoffice, and Ubuntu developers have the aesthetic sensibilities of a cinder blog.

Update: Not trying to troll, just a wake-up call. Based on the voting I see you guys aren't interested in making a good OS. What linux is today: Theme + Some Program's + Package System, all bundles into a downloadable.iso. WTF? Where is the innovation in that?? Every three months a new distro, for what purpose, all of them useless. You're right, linux is about choice, the choice to suck, be incompatible, be difficult to use, and just plain frustrating. But go ahead and keep submitting those ideas mates, because may be in 10-15 years, Ubuntu will have caught up to the rest of the world.

You want ideas? HERE!
Why no integration between openoffice and firefox/thunderbird?
Why such poor enterprise support?
Why no unified short-cuts?

Neat copy/past
Written by dragoninsane the 28 Jul 08 at 08:30. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When we move data(files) there should be neat feature :
when you move files with the same name, you should be prompted to either overwrite the files, rename the new files or cancel the operation.
Skip file(s) can also be great, also prompt when duplicate file is seen with same file name also show information like Size and date of creation/modification of both files,if possible.

jockey driver manager should also handle other drivers in future
Written by dragoninsane the 28 Jul 08 at 08:49. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As said in other posts to support driver installation from internet,a jockey framework is being developed.I like the concept very much and i think it will be the first of its kind in linux, but there should be three more improvements to it will be added advantage
1)Make jockey to handle other type of hardware also like network,audio/video device drivers, more and more with each release.
2)Make it possible to install drivers from local media/drive not just internet if i have the drivers CD media with INF file.
3)Ability to request for driver for new device drivers(through form?).maintain central device/hw database that will be compatible with other linux distributions also if possible.

Improve Keyboard Shortcuts
Written by catalania the 24 Jul 08 at 01:59. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Could be a good idea, (for clumsy person like me), to introduce changes in Keyboard Shortcuts:

1º Like said MarcusRubeus in:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8253/

It was good, to put a restore default button of Key combination. But a Button for all combinations, and a right click on the specific key combination to restore only the combination selected.

2º Like said fluteflute & strattonbrazil in:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/84/

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/11133/

*The current key binding for "Ctrl+Alt+Supr/Del" brings up the shutdown/logout options, which is already accessible as a desktop button, which is redundant for a relatively less used function.*

We could change "Ctrl+Alt+Supr/Del" for the "Task Manager".

And we need to put "Task Manager" like a option in the "Keyboard Shortcuts". Somebody can want to put Ctrl+SUPER+Supr/Del (SUPER = Windows Key) for example.

More (thanks Tree MendUs, I take your 3º idea):
In Task manager window, with additional buttons for shutdown /logout functions.

3º Also, I think could be interesting, put a "expansion set" in "Keyboard Shortcuts", to create a "super direct link".

If you are a proffessional and you use often a program like Gimp, Inkscape, etc., you will like to have a special HOT KEYs to start immediately your aplications.

ubuntu-restricted-extras: replace msttcorefonts by ttf-liberation

And here same page but now with ttf-liberation:

Ttf-liberation just looks better and it is under GPL. Why should we use non-free msttcorefonts if there is free and better looking alternate available?

Prominent Link to Microsoft's Ideas Page
Written by coolaj86 the 26 Jul 08 at 18:38. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A lot of the ideas that pop up on here have more to do with getting around problems introduced when working with Windows in a mixed Linux / Windows environment (ie dual-boot) rather than actual problems with Ubuntu.

I think that providing a link to the Microsoft Ideas site in brainstorm would be a way to get some of those requests forwarded to the right departments.

http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/outreach/ideas/ideaSubmit.mspx

Unfortunately their "Brainstorm"-ish page is currently broken and the support rep I just IMed to wanted me to visit some other website because he wasn't trained in reporting broken links... and couldn't click on the link he sent me to report it himself...

(BTW, If you'd like a similar experience here's their support rep page: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_more_master?ws=mscom#tab1 )
