a package to make kde apps look as gnome apps (and viceversa)
Written by maxter the 5 May 08 at 09:17. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
in gnome is possible to make kde apps look as gnome apps installing some packages from ubuntu repositories (kcontrol and dependecies, languages for kde, polymer etc. etc), and some icons set and color schemes from gnome-look, and then configuring kcontrol.
same things is possible for qt applications that do not need a kde environment, installing also qt-config

it should be nice to have a package that can install all the above stuff and configure it.

same thing for windows application running under wine.

it should be a plus a simple configuration tool to modify some settings: hiding of the 'other' menu that the installation of kcontrol brings out, installing and configuring qt-config, system wide installation of personal icons set or color schemes etc. etc).

i'm not into kde, but i think the same thing shold be possible for gnome apps running in a kde environment.

Avoid data loss with unclean removal of USB Flash drives
Written by mp3phish the 5 May 08 at 02:16. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This idea ties together ideas #8033 and #7989 with some improvements.

Problems with USB Flash Unmounting: 1) When you pull the plug on a drive, the system does not detect it and take care of the forced unmount for you. User has to go to command line. 2) When you unplug a drive, even when the light isn't blinking, unflushed buffers can cause significant data loss for no apparent reason.

Solution:

1) the system should detect when the drive is unplugged and if it is still mounted, a forced unmount should occur. This will prevent the user from having to use the command line for an every day occurrence. Many newbies reboot the system to get rid of this error state.

2) There should be a timeout set that after X seconds of inactivity (I propose 5 seconds) the write buffer should be flushed.

3) A new .fslog (or similar) file should be installed in all usb flash drives upon connection. If its a journaled filesystem, then don't, but for fat32 and others, it should do this. It will have the following function:
a. for every flush of the write buffer due to the timeout in part (2), write an entry into the log at the end indicating all writes are complete. This can be called the "clean" state
b. when writing to the disk with an initially empty write buffer, check to see if the log indicates a clean or dirty state. If clean, change the state to dirty.
c. when mounting a flash drive the system should read the log file, detect whether it is dirty or clean, and do a fsck if dirty, warning the user to not unplug the drive when it is in use.
d. Due to (a) and (b), at maximum, a log write could only occur once after 5 seconds of inactivity if the buffer has data in it. So it would not reduce lifespan of the flash. And even if your worried about flushing after 5 seconds, it would only correspond to writes already on their way to the disk, negating any problem with limited writes and lifespan of the drive.

Sell ubuntu live memory sticks on ubuntu site

If they also have some ubuntu branding these are really nice gifts and give aways. Just sell a 2GB or 4GB memory stick for a competitive price. Also might be nice to sell these at exhibitions

Don't stop bug fixing!
Written by caligarn the 27 Apr 08 at 14:35. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
Just because Ubuntu is now released does not mean that bugs shouldn't be uploaded into the Update Manager as rigorously as they were during the month before April 24th! Hardy is still buggy, so I think that the entire 6 months between Hardy and Ibex should continue that trend of HARDINESS. It should fit its definition! Keep getting stronger and stronger.

I've got "ubuntu" and "hardy heron" on google-alerts, so I can read all the latest blog posts and news articles that are coming up lately. There's a lot of critisms. I recommend we address those criticisms thoroughly and completely in the next 6 months, and I mean, address them tirelessly and rigorously.

There needs to be a way in which we can monitor all the complaints, criticisms, etc. in one place so that they're in a database, easily accessible. Meaning, can we consolidate the critiques that show up in the blogosphere, ubuntuforums, brainstorm and launchpad? Maybe something similar to ubuntustats.com.

What do ya'll think?

Brainstorm: Notify when Ideas have been reviewed, but not implemented
Written by sparky11 the 1 Apr 08 at 12:41. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
So far, it seems that brainstorm is going at a snails pace. I understand that it takes time to implement ideas, but why not do what Dell Ideastorm does by adding a notification when an idea is under review or reviewed. This really help people know how their ideas are doing.

A wallpapers repository
Written by adivinamee the 1 Apr 08 at 01:23. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think Ubuntu should incorporate a repository with a collection of wallpapers. Even should include some wallpapers in the default installation.

Give a discription as to what a terminal is.
Written by Cheesecake the 29 Mar 08 at 11:05. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you press ctrl alt f1 ect you get a terminal indepenant of X and is wonderfull if you know what your doing, but say my mum accadentally presses ctrl alt f1. Not knowing really what she is doing or the cat lands on the keyboard and puts it into a terminal. She would think the computer is broken and be very confused on how to fix it I think we should put a discription as to what it is and how to get back to X

More freedom of Desktop arrangement
Written by dustigroove the 21 Mar 08 at 19:26. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The desktop context-menu option for "Clean Up by Name" should also include the options for sorting by "Size", "Type", "Date", and "Emblems", as is already possible under all normal Nautilus windows.

I would also like to recommend having the option to have the desktop icons arranged starting from the right side if preferred by the user. Default should of course continue to be sorting starting from the left side, but having a choice for those of us that are either are used to this method, or just find that it fits us better, would be of great benefit.

--

DISCLAIMER: Some components of this idea should be _options_ and not the defaults. I'm not a big fan of forcing anyone to do something a certain way, but I am a huge proponent for choice and flexibility.

Additional detail when prompted for a password
Written by dustigroove the 18 Mar 08 at 03:21. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When a user is prompted for a password in a graphical environment to gain superuser privileges (ie - gksudo) I suggest that it be implemented that additional detailed information is presented that is relevant to the action the user is trying to perform, as well as the security implications the action may have (the latter could perhaps be in the form of a link to an appropriate Help page).

Improve the Polish and Quality of included Games
Written by LostOverThere the 2 Mar 08 at 10:54. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I do NOT mean include massive games like Tremulous. But rather add some polish to the already included games such as Tetris, or Chess. Currently, the included games don't look very professional or have much polish if any. Which is not a good look at all.

I suggest that a small group of people working on polishing off the included games to give a better feel to them.

Add Semi-Transparency To Panels by Default
Written by LostOverThere the 9 Mar 08 at 10:12. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently, by default the panels in Ubuntu are just a boring solid colour which looks very unprofessional. I suggest the panels to be simply changed to about a 50% transparency.

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

Start taking advantage of Upstart

Replace initscripts with upstart events. Our boot sequence is currently slow, full of race conditions and poor interactions, especially with competition between the series of tasks run by sysv-rc, udev and sometimes just with the kernel. We developed upstart so that we could have a truly event driven boot sequence that would be fast, reliable and flexible; we should take advantage of it.

Developer comments
The primary reason that we're not taking full advantage of Upstart yet is that it still requires some development to have sufficient features to actually be better than sysvinit. You can follow Upstart development at its homepage.

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

Main menu (GNOME) should open faster the first time it is clicked.
Written by NachoBlanco the 28 Mar 08 at 17:46. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It takes around 2-3 seconds in a modern PC to open (GNOME). I supouse it is because it is loaded the first time it is clicked, but it should be loaded before in order not to need to wait.
