Applications should automatically unmount devices when needed
Written by d1s4st3r the 29 Mar 08 at 09:04. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Recently I needed to erase a DVD-RW to copy a new .ISO image on it. When I put the DVD into the writer, Ubuntu automatically mounted it on a certain mount point (this because that DVD wasn't blank but containing some data).
When I opened GnomeBaker and tried to erase it, GnomeBaker crashed because the resource (the DVD) was busy (or mounted).

Just as a CD burning program can't write on a mounted CD, other programs like partitioning ones can't work on mounted partitions.

So, I think some applications (like GnomeBaker) may have the possibility to automatically unmount devices without asking user interaction in case they need to operate on them.

Ban Microsoft and Apple from Brainstorm
Written by Eldmannen the 29 Mar 08 at 12:06. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ban those corporate asshats from Microsoft and Apple from visiting Brainstorm.
They are uncreative and come here to take our ideas.

Like in Vista, they were like: "Thanks to the ground-breaking and security revolutionizing work of Microsoft Research, we are proud to present to you User Account Control (UAC)!". They even patented it.
I am like what? We've had sudo for 28 years!

Then they're like "We offer you Microsoft Research latest innovation the Windows PowerShell, a scriptable command-line shell!"
And I am like, yeah we've had that too. We've had bourne shell since 1977!

Then they're like "Microsoft Research presents you our latest innovation; Server Core will let you administer Windows Server 2008 directly from the command-line instead of from the graphical user interface!".
Hello? We've had that since the 60's.

Use a swap file instead of swap partition
Written by Eldmannen the 29 Mar 08 at 12:51. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many new users are confused when it comes to the installation of Ubuntu.

They didn't know they need a swap partition, and they're not sure what size it should be, and how to set it up.
They think its difficult to setup partitions and often don't understand how partitions work and the difference between primary and extended partitions.

Swap partitions have limitations, such as a constant size and can't be resized.

Using a swap file instead of a swap partition, would save users lots of hassle by not having them have to setup swap partitions, etc.

As a bonus, it would allow us to resize them anytime we want/need.

Single mouse click in the firefox adress bar should select all
Written by Zardos72 the 27 Mar 08 at 15:22. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Even if it is very "w******s like": A single click in the adress bar of firefox should automatically select the whole url. It is very annoying to always use a double click if you want to enter a new url.

Idea Withdrawal
Written by ethana2 the 25 Mar 08 at 01:45. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I know when I can't win. Let me clean up after myself.

I have an idea at -100, and I'm ready to drop it so as not to clutter brainstorm and all that. I need to be able to mark it as abandoned by author.

Center right-click context menu under mouse instead of two the right.
Written by deadowl the 24 Mar 08 at 04:23. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Users almost always move the mouse toward
the center of a menu before continuing. This is a strategy in menu browsing,
and eliminating the need for it could subconsciously make the interface feel
more usable. Why not center menus under the mouse rather than the traditional
method of drawing it right of the mouse? The one exception for this of
course, would be if centering a menu under a mouse would interfere with the
visibility of the menu.

Make a default IDE and programming language for ubuntu
Written by josebaezmedina the 22 Mar 08 at 22:59. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have been a user of Microsoft Windows for a long time and I regret to say that they have managed to "standardize" on some form of programming language and IDE (Visual Studio) and VB.net as default settings for programming. In ubuntu there are many languages and programming environments very much, but would not be great if it came with an IDE and programming language by default?. Maybe would be a good idea if you do a new IDE with Python as a language centre, so serious easier for developers of other environments migrate to Linux and more specifically to UBUNTU.

downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads. XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to "$HOME/Downloads" instead of "$HOME/Desktop" in the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs.

This Downloads folder should be the default download location for firefox and this folder should be bookmarked in nautilus by xdg-user-dirs-gtk (like Music,Videos,Pictures and Documents).

RATIONALE :
* less cluttered desktop and/or homedir
* still easy to access your downloads

Single copy/paste buffer
Written by banta the 29 Feb 08 at 09:13. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If you select a text witht he mouse it is one copy buffer (A), and if you select text and press ctrl+c it is another buffer (B).

For those of us who like select a text with the mouse and paste with shift + insert we are usually paste-ing from the B buffer.

It is possible to syncronize the buffers with klipper which is a KDE application but this should be on by default.

When I drag and drop files on another partition, ask COPY or MOVE.
Written by Cybercod the 15 Mar 08 at 05:20. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes I have symlinked folders on the desktop that reside on other partitions. Moving stuff to these folders always copies, and I have to delete the originals. I'd rather either they just move, like they would for a normal folder, or they ask me whether I wish to move or copy.

Use Banshee as the standard music player
Written by HOMBRESINIESTRO the 1 Mar 08 at 08:03. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I know many of you have concerns when it come to mono applications, but hands down, Banshee is the most interesting and most promising jukebox app in the gtk-land. Moreover, Ubuntu ships with f-spot installed by default, which is a mono app, too.

Banshee has a great iPod support, offers a clean and modern interface, is much more visually appealing than rythmbox, and has a more intuitive workflow.

Desktop Icons - Show by default or add easy configuration
Written by squidliberty the 29 Feb 08 at 12:17. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've installed Ubuntu for a lot of people and one thing that everyone always requests is visible desktop icons to reach their Home folder and Trash. Currently, I believe, this can only be accomplished by launching a Configuration Editor via the command line (gconf-editor).

I would propose that Ubuntu's user friendliness could be greatly increased by showing these icons on the desktop by default (as is done by Kubuntu) or, at the very least, providing a simple method of toggling system folder icons (perhaps when the user right-clicks the desktop?)
