gnome- prefix on many exectuables is confusing and should be removed
Written by dhart the 9 Nov 12 at 05:16. Related project: Gnome. New
Many programs, such as the Terminal (gnome-terminal), System Log viewer (gnome-system-log), System Monitor (gnome-system-monitor), Calculator (gnome-calculator), and many others, contain the uncessary gnome-prefix, while other programs such as the Text Editor (gedit) do not contain the prefix.

Trying to remember which program names contain the prefix and which do not is confusing and frustrating, particularly when trying to run them from Alt-F2 or the bash shell in a Terminal.

Solution #1: Remove the gnome-prefix
Written by dhart the 9 Nov 12 at 05:16.
Remove the gnome-prefix at the packaking stage (when creating debs) and, for backward compatibility, create symbolic links containing the gnome-prefix to the non-prefixed versions.

Solution #2: Add symbolic links
Written by puxkggn the 22 Jan 13 at 14:40.
Leave the package names as they are.
Just create symbolic links for the gnome-prefix executables (programs) that contains a non-prefixed version.

Run application when laptop lid is closed/opened
Written by dhart the 3 Jul 08 at 03:02. Related project: Gnome. New
at System > Preferences > Power Management

on tabs "On AC Power" and "On Battery Power"

add on option to "Run Application" when laptop lid is closed (and when it's opened).

For example, I'd like to send a STOP signal to Firefox when the laptop lid is closed, to reduce power use, then send a CONT signal when the lid is opened, all while keeping SSH and chat sessions alive and active.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #10639
Written by dhart the 3 Jul 08 at 03:02.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #10639 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!
