when i was looking for sound converter, i found about 6 positions in synaptic
it would be great if i could turn on "moore info" and inside this window i will se some screenshots, reviews, maybe some videos etc
there is a great functionality in some package manager - user rating, more info about packages would be very good especially for new users
from the other side, every user should be able to write review,, add screenshotss etc very easily
this could be made with special option in menu - review this software (just like translate this program, report bug etc) - this would show a dialog with fields to fill - this way, community could rate each software very precisely
this data should be also available from web
imagine this:
user has just removed windows, and now he is looking for svg editor
he just opens package manager - chooses category "graphics" -> "svg editor" and he is able to browse through the catalog, watch some screenshots and videos, and finally choose which software is the best for him
there is ksnapshot, krecordmydesktop and other usefull apps for implemeting this

If a dark theme: one that doesn't suck!

Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.
How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.
We should really work to increase usability: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability
I have looked through all the artwork submissions for Intrepid, and of all of them, this is the one dark theme that i would actually like to use: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Wall-light
I first saw it on this Digg submission: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Intrepid_Ibex_Mockup_Designs
Of course, i'm sure everyone will have input to make it even better. This isn't a final design, but vote for the concept so far!
P.S. Please Digg :) Thanks http://digg.com/linux_unix/Vote_for_a_beautiful_usable_Ubuntu

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

Add Avant Window Navigator to the repositories

Make Avant Window Navigator easily installable from the appropriate Ubuntu repository. It is annoying to have to install it from a 3rd party location.
Also, when installing have it ask if you want to automatically remove the bottom dock and reposition needed functionality to the top dock.

It is very frustrating when you get caught out after 30 boots and the system does a full check. Especially if you are about to give a presentation or you just need to read one bit of information. The Ubuntu team have done a great job of speeding up the boot time but this irritation undoes all the good work.
Possible solutions and further explanation:

This is implemented in Hardy Heron.
You can press the escape key to cancel the disk check.
This change was part of a more global set of changes to usplash, you can read more about it here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UsplashPolishSpec

Offer a version of Ubuntu that comes "bare." Eliminate large, non-essential applications such as Open Office, Ekiga, Rythmbox, Evolution, Pidgin, Gimp, etc. Doing this would allow users to pick and choose the applications they wish to use. It would also be great when HDD space is limited, such as Solid State Drive based laptops.
Alternatively you could allow users to choose which applications are installed by letting them customize it during the live install.
