Remote file system should act like a local one

Normally, if I have access to some files, my home directory for example, all applications I run also get that access (unless I run them in some jail).
This does not happen when working with remote files ("Places" > "Connect to server..."). Then each application needs to explicitly be given access to each server it wants to use files on. It would be better if remote parts of the file system worked identically to local ones. Just like with sshfs.

LTS should get the newest versions of standard programs

If you install an LTS version, you may chose to stay with it until the next LTS version. Problem is that you will stay with old programs and will not have access to the newest versions of The Gimp, OpenOffice, ...
People running LTS versions should be able to go and install OpenOffice when it comes out via the Ubuntu repo's and not via getdeb.net or via the official OpenOffice site.
Example: Hardy ships with The Gimp 2.4.5 and it will stay 2.4.5, when 2.5.0 is launched and we want to have it we need to go to getdeb or the Gimp site and download it. Same when OpenOffice 3.0 comes out.
This option should be made possible via the update manager.
This function is not necessary for people running other versions because these have a short lifespan and programs will not change a lot in 6-12 months.

Azureus ( http://azureus.sourceforge.net) in ubuntu repositories is still in version 2.5.0.4 while there is already version 3.0.5.0 available for linux!
I think it would be nice to include the latest version in the repos, or both, if they still want to offer the older version, with the classic interface...
[edit] To anyone interested on how to make the prety link:
It is used with html code, I can't post it here because it would not be displayed (would be interpreted, as expected) you can see about it here.

Add toshiba ACPI and other suport drivers. They were supported on early 1.6 versions. On feisty, gutsy and now hardy there is no toshiba support (unless some lucky coincidence).
If toshutils and fnfxd utilities would be added to instalation (if computer = toshiba, then install :) ) it would be great.

Make "Trash" part of Nautilus "Tree"

In Nautilus, the 'Trash' is visible on the left panel only under 'Places' view and nowhere else. Make 'Trash' visible under 'Tree' view as well. This way it is easy to:
1. drag and drop
2. tell if stuff is in trash
3. access what's in it

Make 4.1 (and more) sound over optical cable work better

There is currently no possible open source means of properly playing more then a left and right channel by optical cable on speakers. The problem is that to send more channels, we need Dolby digital, DTS, or WMA Pro, none of which we can legally support without paying for licensing (no thanks), and using closed sourced code.
If we expect to attract gamers or anyone who has more then 2 speakers, we need to encourage the development of an open standard. In the long run, this benefits everyone (except Dolby Labs) because anyone could make compatible decoders and speakers without coughing up money for licensing. It also allows us to add support to Linux without closed source dodginess. Canonical could get the ball rolling by suggesting the idea to Ogg Vorbis, and other audio organisations who may support it.
Most decoders do support upscaling from 2.0 to 5.1, but it never sounds right for gaming. And its not true 5.1. Plus, who wants to buy a high end decoder, and not fully utilise it for gaming?

I created a new Guest account, then I stripped it of all user privileges.
Then I found out, that it could access all MY private data files in MY home directory.
Please fix it so that other users cannot read the home directories of other people. This is a breech of privacy.

The various Java plugins (particularly sun-java5 & 6) do not work in Firefox3 on Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy). There has been a bug report open about this since 2007-Dec-04, but it's still not resolved. The bug is currently marked as low-urgency/undecided. Java is a must for many users as there are still a number of websites which require it. Vote this up if you feel it's important.

Canonical must encourage work in making OOo and Java support GTK better, OOo should actually use GTK correctly and Java must be able to mimic a lot more GTK engines, or at least ubuntulooks since it is used in the default.
OOo has a lot of issues with GTK specially noticeable on custom themes.

it should be improved,i think avast should be supported

popular av for linux, win.but Clamav is also good i dont
know which will be people's choice.clamav is good
but doesnt have best support also it doesnt have gui.
Include context menu for files/folders for virus scan.
scan with Clamav/avast wud be gr8.also clamav should be
available in repo.

include codecs in ubuntu cd but disabled by default.

As clearly as that, multimedia codecs should be included
in default installation only installed when user agrees
to Restricted drivers copyrights(most of users still
dont know about what are multimedia copyrights from
windows environment),i mean drivers for playing
MP3,most popular audio and video formats.most of users
agree to install codecs if they dont let them install
Ubuntu JEOS.
if this is not achievable,Make a Deb packages for most
popular codecs(as in xp) for playing these files and
make it available on ubuntu website.its frustrating
to find that i need to download every time i install and
one codecs version doesnt work with all Ubuntu versions
like different codecs for different Ubuntu versions
fawn,gutsy etc.

I have Windows on another partition.
In Ubuntu I mount my NTFS partitions.
In Windows, I have created .txt files.
When I edit these files in gedit on Ubuntu, it can break them slightly by using different newline \r\n or encodings or something.
I suggest to check the encoding and use the same encoding when save file, or something.

Promote development of modern benchmarking program
|

We have dozens of ancient benchmarks, which mainly test I/O operations, or basic tasks. Or your typical Quake 3 ones.
We really should somehow promote development (maybe as a bounty) for a new benchmark (or benchmark framework) that can push modern hardware (similar to 3Dmark). Whilst it may not seem important, many computer guys use 3Dmark normally as a way to test their overclocking, and compare to other people.
If we design it in a modular fashion, as a framework, where every test is a plugin, the community will help making good plugins. Surely a framework would not take much effort to code.
After we have a proper framework, you could expect members of the community to code:
- I/O tests
- Shader tests
- OpenGL tests
- Even directX tests on windows (we have the advantage though of being able to plugin to winelib too to benchmark wine).
Its a project with a little time needed at the beginning, but it will take on a life of its own. And, since we are in total control, it will give us the ability to accurately test our performance with other OS's, to work out what we can improve (or where we pwn them).
Current benchmarks like 3Dmark are coded in Directx, so are unlikely to be ported to other platforms, and we have the advantage of having a modular system.
In the future, we could use it to test for default installed programs. ie, test automatically if the system is good enough for compwiz. and enable if it runs it well, allow users to only list games for install they can run well, etc.

Always open application in workspace where it was started

I mainly see this with Eclipse, but it also happens with OpenOffice. What happens is this: I'm in workspace A looking at my email. I decide to start Eclipse in workspace B. The Eclipse splash screen appears and I flip back to workspace A again, because eclipse takes a while to start. After a while the eclipse main window comes up on top of my email program, in workspace A. Then I have to drag it over to workspace B, where I wanted it to appear. I would prefer that it come up in the workspade where I started it.
OpenOffice has a similar result, but GIMP will actually pull you over to workspace B when it comes up. That's kind of cool, but behavior is inconsistent between GIMP and OpenOffice or Eclipse.

A default GUI for PulseAudio would be great, the ability to control the volume for each program is a very useful thing...
[edit] For those who want it, just install padevchooser (PulseAudio Device Chooser) through synaptic, it also install all the other packages needed...
