Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Speak to HP to get Ubuntu on new HP miniaturized laptop
Written by Raval the 8 Apr 08 at 18:16. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
"HP had unveiled their version of a miniaturized laptop for school kids. The tiny device boasts speeds up to 1.6 gigahertz. They haven't yet decided on a name, but 'netbooks' is one possibility. They will be used for surfing the Internet and doing other basic tasks like word processing. The company plans to have 50 million units available in the marketplace by 2011. Optical drives have been left out to prevent kids from playing 'unauthorized games.' Weighing less than 3 pounds with a tiny 8.9 inch screen, the machines start below $500 for a Linux-based model. Prices are expected to be higher for Windows Vista models."

bookmarks with date and time, for firefox
Written by dega1999 the 5 Apr 08 at 22:01. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I don't know what it is in your Bookmarks folder of Firefox but mine is really huge and I have to waste time sometimes putting in order my bookmarks.

Most of the bookmarks are becomed obsolete.
When you browse on the net it's a common task to save some bookmarks but not all of the saved link are useful after the research or in the near future...

The idea here is to have the possibility to organize the bookmarks with a delete time.
When you want to save a link there should be the possibility to choose one of the following sentence for the link:

-never delete
-delete it when I close firefox
-delete after [x] hours and ask
-delete after [x] hours and don't ask me
-delete after [y] days and ask
-delete after [y] days and don't ask me

Allow parallel install of totem-xine and totem-gstreamer
Written by loonyphoenix the 3 Apr 08 at 18:06. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
Sometimes totem-gstreamer is better. Sometimes totem-xine. Both have their good and bad sides. Why can't I install them both? If I have totem-gstreamer and want to install totem-xine, the package manager demands that I delete totem-gstreamer, and vice-versa.

I mean, how hard can it be to implement? Do these two conflict so much? I have never seen other two video players which couldn't work together, neither in Linux, nor in Windows.

View Source Button like in OLPC
Written by fwolfste the 1 Apr 08 at 12:51. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I find the idea of a "view source" button in the olpc project soo lovely that a software equivalent would be nice.
Maybe as applet: you click on the button, then on the window you want to see the code of. If you have the sources installed, the folder is opened otherwise its asked if you want to get the sources via synaptic.

Replace Usplash with RedHat Graphical Boot (RHGB)
Written by moomex the 25 Mar 08 at 08:34. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Red Hat Graphical Boot provides a clean and simple interface to the boot process

It's more than just a splash screen. It's real.
It shows a real progress bar.
It also allows you to maximize a window that displays the boot log.
It actually opens it automatically if there is a failure.
The reason why it's pretty is because it is running XOrg.
It's a special Xorg just for it which is turned off after a successful boot.

Take a look at:

OpenOffice, Java GTK support
Written by vexorian the 23 Mar 08 at 20:48. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Canonical must encourage work in making OOo and Java support GTK better, OOo should actually use GTK correctly and Java must be able to mimic a lot more GTK engines, or at least ubuntulooks since it is used in the default.

OOo has a lot of issues with GTK specially noticeable on custom themes.

The version of the java-gnome bindings in the repository is currently at 2.x. The package description text says:

"Please be aware that this package is part of java-gnome 2.x series which is deprecated"

The web site says:

"In 2006, a complete re-engineering of the bindings was initiated, and that work has resulted in: java-gnome 4.0"
http://java-gnome.sourceforge.net/

Ubuntu should provide java-gnome 4.x

Too often I have to select images with cryptic file names from a file chooser. Because I can't see the images I typically have to open the folder I am browsing separately so I can find image I am looking for, remember the cryptic name, and return to the file dialogue to select the file I want.

This could be easier if their was an option to view thumbnails, or to at least preview the image.

File preview is now in Hardy.

Easy file sharing between local users
Ubuntu

In :
Priority : Undefined
Definition : Discussion (Needs guidance)
Implementation : Not started

spec
Written by kamil.paral the 8 Mar 08 at 21:20. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently there is no way to easily share files between multiple local users. I am talking about full read-write access to particular folder, eg. music folder.

Example: Alice and Bob uses the same computer. Alice has read access to Bob's home folder. Bob has read access to Alice's home folder. They want to fully share (read/write) their music. So they should ideally create /home/music folder, put all the music there and use it. Everything Bob puts into there, Alice should be able to read and remove, and vice versa. This is currently impossible in Ubuntu. Bob has to manually fix permissions every time Alice wants to delete something Bob's (Bob creates /home/music/Britney, but Alice can't delete /home/music/Britney/song1.mp3).

I have discussed this issue with several linux gurus and there is currently no easy nor difficult way to achieve this in Linux on the same (ext3) partition. With every proposed solution I can give you counterexample (group permissions, ACLs, local Samba, local NFS, etc - there is always problem when moving files). There would have to be created utility to set shared folders and some daemon would have to monitor changes and modify permissions.

Currently the easiest solution known for me is to share files on separate (ironically) NTFS partition, because when mounting NTFS you can force user/group/permissions on file access. What a shame, we use Microsoft technologies just to share files between Ubuntu users.

This problem is quite serious, give it a thought or two. Everyone who is not using Ubuntu computer alone and wants to share music/films/etc between multiple users knows what I am talking about.

//New info:
Atany has proposed in the comment that BindFS project can be used to achieve this functinality:
http://code.google.com/p/bindfs/
I have tried it and it works very well. Developers which would like to implement this idea should have a look on BindFS, it's very promising tool, it could provide all necessary background for this.

Developer comments
The proposed inotify/chmod hack in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LocalFileShare would probably work to some degree, but I think it is subject to race conditions, and also not very flexible.

A slightly better solution would IMHO be to provide the shared directory through FUSE; then we can impose dynamic size limitations (at most use 2/3 of the available space in /home, etc.), fine-grained dynamic permissions, and avoid a lot of inotifying and permission race conditions.

Once this is solved and provided by default, we should reconsider "#6106: Make so other people cant access your home directory", which we didn't do yet in order for people to be able to share files r/o.

Shutdown and Boot to Windows   forum
Written by dhaus111 the 8 Mar 08 at 17:52. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We all have to admit, that every now and then there is a need to boot windows. Like when you and your friends want to start playing starcraft again. The problem is, I constantly miss the grub menu because I'm grabbing a beer (to help me deal with windows a little better), which is a pain in the ass. A practical easy way to fix this would be to have a "boot to windows button" option in the shutdown menu.

Ubuntu team up with Apple
Written by kd7tck@msn.com the 8 Mar 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I firmly believe there is no reason why Ubuntu can't work together with a company like Apple. I would love to see some of apple's proprietary software ported to Linux. A more user friendly way of accessing Apple hardware would be nice too. The idea behind such a merger would be the idea of kicking Microsoft when it's down. With how poorly Vista is doing, now is the time to team up with all of Microsoft's rivals and kick Microsoft off it's high horse.

Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time   forum
Written by Arioch the 28 Feb 08 at 15:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

360 controller compatibility
Written by darkproteus66 the 7 Mar 08 at 20:51. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make it so that the 360 controller can work in the Ubuntu desktop. I already use my 360 controller on my PC for some new game and all my emulations but it would be great for it to work on my Ubuntu partition. Also native support for the wireless dongle and 360 controller would be great.

flash 9,0,0,115 is 300% slower than Windows's, don't make it default for Hardy   forum

quote howlingmadhowie:

>"adobe flash has become ridiculously slow"

The linux version is a sad attempt compared that of windows and macOS.

a few things were fixed, but performance has decreased dramatically.

vote for this bug at adobe website so we get it fixed!
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=756239

it has become terribly and painfully slow, even on modern dual-core processors, 2gb ram and the latest Nvidia Card. Older single core computers becomes virtually unusable in any website with flash elements.

does Adobe plans this on purpose so we stay with Windows?

Sadly this's a mayor blow on Linux once again.

if you already have v9,0,0,115 installed you can fix it by reverting to the last fully working version: v9,0,0,48 (i call this a "fix" not a downgrade)

by re-installing flash 9,0,0,48 we can solve this

Do not install support for PalmOS devices by default
Written by jespdj the 8 Mar 08 at 07:23. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Most users do not have a PalmOS PDA. For some reason, Ubuntu developers decided to install support for PalmOS devices by default in Ubuntu (you can access it at: System / Preferences / PalmOS Devices).

I think it's not a good idea to by default install support for one specific brand of PDA's which only a tiny fraction of the users is ever going to use. Those people who do have a PalmOS PDA can easily install it afterwards.

So: Please remove support for PalmOS devices from the default install. This includes the packages: gnome-pilot, gnome-pilot-conduits.

WebOS - Remote access to my own Ubuntu machine desktop through any web browser
Written by ArtInvent the 5 Mar 08 at 19:32. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu needs a service that will give access to my full PC desktop through any web-connected device with a browser. This idea is just the logical extension of 'remote desktop', and also similar to the trend towards cloud computing and online desktops such as Ulteo, eyeOS, DesktopTwo, myGoya, OOS, AjaxWindows, etc. But these concepts all revolve around using a third-party's hardware and selection of OS and apps. At this point, these efforts leave much to be desired, the apps are very limited and rudimentary, and the allotted storage is paltry. Also you are forced to trust all that data to a third party.

I already have a wonderful and powerful Ubuntu PC set up exactly the way I like it with fantastic apps and all my copious data, docs, music, etc. Why not just be able to use that fully, remotely from any web connected device? Logging into your very own desktop through a browser would be oh so slick.

This is pretty much the equivalent of a remote desktop with key differences. You have to install special RDP software and mess with internet settings on the client. That's a hassle and you may not have the time or the permissions to install things. It's likely not available at all for an iPhone or a Nokia MID etc etc.

Furthermore, if this were implemented robustly enough, it would also allow local PC sharing. Very much like multi-seat or thin-client concepts, only probably even simpler. You just set up rudimentary little workstations with enough hardware and OS to run a web browser, and hook up to the server through any wired/wireless network jack. Done.
