"Administrator mode" for Dolphin/Nautilus

ATM it is very uneasy to edit system files as root with a GUI.
E.g. if you want to edit files in /etc, /boot/ etc... you have to go to the console, get root and edit the files either with nanno or with "sudo gedit" (GNOME) or "sudo kate" (KDE).
It would be a good idea to integrate a "Administrator mode" button or something like this with policykit backend into nautilus/dolphin.
I think for nautilus is something lika that underways, but for dolphin not.
To access root-only directories a question while entering the dir would be ok, but for editing files e.g this is not enough.
Other solution would be - every time I don't have the rights to do something (save /etc/samba/smb.conf e.g.) the systema asks me for the password.

keyboard arrows should work on logout screen

In the Gnome environment, when loging out it seems like you have to use the mouse to select one of the log out options ie. log out, shut down, and suspend.
Users should be able to use the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate to the desired option and press enter to select the option.
This would give it a more professional feel and may be quicker and more preferable to some users.

show an alert message when USB drive is unplugged hardly

I think Ubuntu should show an alert when a USB drive is unplugged "hardly", that is without selecting the option "umount drive". Or, another way, could be to add a message in notification bar, when he plugs-in the USB drive, remembering he should umount the device before plugging it out.
I prefer the first idea.

In Nautilus file browser pane, I wish I could drag and drop files to archives **without** having to open file-roller.
(other ideas in brainstorm only mention D'n'D between a file-roller window and nautilus)

the problem: Sometime the gnome-panel hangs...
If I close with the system monitor, it's impossible (for me) to execute it another time.
It's possibly to have a Run Option on System Monitor, like Windows has?
Thanks a lot, and, as always, excuse my poor english.

If a dark theme: one that doesn't suck!

Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.
How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.
We should really work to increase usability: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability
I have looked through all the artwork submissions for Intrepid, and of all of them, this is the one dark theme that i would actually like to use: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Wall-light
I first saw it on this Digg submission: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Intrepid_Ibex_Mockup_Designs
Of course, i'm sure everyone will have input to make it even better. This isn't a final design, but vote for the concept so far!
P.S. Please Digg :) Thanks http://digg.com/linux_unix/Vote_for_a_beautiful_usable_Ubuntu

Office software is sole of professional work and keeping things tidy.
Open office word alternative improvements Glance:
1) Support more paper sizes for printing (word apparently supports more than 25 forms)
2) Quick easy Printing [1 click print option without editing document]
Better previews of actions that can be performed [this is major area open office is lagging behind]
3) Live previews of font changes, print preview [improvements], other actions like applying themes, styles, borders, etc should have better previews.
4) Font manager integration into office, fonts in open office should look professional, uniqueness, distinction, visibility.
5) Clipboard manager for both ubuntu and Open office will make life easier. Storing more snapshots of clipboards, integration into system, revert/apply changes in chain of histories
6) Charts in open office are too outdated and still word has more than 50 chart types, drawing vector and art is mess, hardly updated and old tools. Better support of Inserting International characters (ASCII, character map integration, insert equations?)
7) Allow inserting custom files, images, art etc
8) Backgrounds, watermarks, document colors, mail merge, email, fax improvements(get addresses from other email accounts, system address book, over network, import yahoo, mail email addresses(csv ?) etc)
Better integration of open office writer into calc; impress [spreadsheet, presentation applications] for easy import/export.
Wow can we match Ribbon interface. Better If we can get best fonts rolling for both open office and ubuntu before next major, if possible some way to protect documents, versioning etc.improve compatibility with docx[office 2007],Google docs, zoho word file[?],abw[abiword] file formats. Writer can also be used as source code editor for WebPages, online help and online integration of help into open office, get templates online, more templates and themes
Wow can we match Ribbon interface. Better if we can get best fonts rolling for open office and ubuntu rolling before next Major Release like open office 3 so people expect much more from big releases.

Integration of scheduling (cron) into administrative GUIs.

Well I just discovered cron last night because I finally came across a task that required me to use it. In any case, it would be nice if it was integrated into administrative GUIs such that you can schedule different rules to go into effect at different times.
For instance, my aunt wants to let my cousin roam the internet but not for hours on end unless he's doing something more productive than playing webgames, or browsing youtube and myspace. With cron (I'm also using /etc/firestarter/firestarter.sh), I can set up times to allow outgoing traffic to everything, and then the rest of the time for sites she wants my cousin to be able to go to without her consent.
However, she certainly wouldn't be able to do this on her own, which sucks.

Create a website similar to the Mojave Experiment, except for Ubuntu. This is a great marketing idea. It would help show that Ubuntu is an easy to learn alternative to vista and xp.

I've been thinking... there is a lot of trouble with mp3, avi, wma, and all those multimedia formats. (I know legal issues) So, why not making EASIER and a smoother transition to free formats like Ogg. Ogg is actually BETTER than mp3.
Its about giving information, making easier things.
Example:
- When user tries to reproduce mp3 file:
offer 2 options, 1) convert to Ogg format and talk about advantages of this format, 2) download proprietary codecs
- Every media player should ask this to the user on first run and convert it too if needed.
This could be a solution with all the trouble with proprietary media files.
FEEL FREE TO SUGGEST ANY OTHER WAY TO GET TO THE SAME OBJECTIVE, USE FREE FORMATS.

Wireless network working before GDM loads

There is no point offering remote logins with GDM, if peoples wireless connections don't work yet. I propose we make it possible to configure the wireless connection from GDM, and at the very least attempt to connect to the wireless network earlier, so that people don't require a hardwired network to use the functionality.

Automated backup and revision control for configuration files

Already implemented

Sometimes configuration files are deleted or (perhaps worse) so many changes are made that a previous working version is not easy to recover.
A daemon which monitors certain configuration files and keeps backups of previous versions would be very helpful.
Lost or damaged config files can be restores. Or one can use this utility to diagnose system problems by trying previous configurations.
The system could be configured to watch specific files in /etc as well as home directories.
(This might be incorporated with security daemons which monitor system files for changes.)
Developer comments
The tool "etckeeper" does this.

Auto resize & rotate printing

When PDFs have stuff over the printable borders, you can shrink pages, but it does not center the shrunken page. This means that anything above the top printing margin and anything to the left of the left printing margin is not printed.
Either Evince or CUPS should have an option resize and center anything that prints over the margins.
Extra credit if you get autorotate to work as well (look at nearly horizontal, straight lines and print them).
Edit: Would somebody correct the title to "auto" instead of "audo", please?

ideas like this
Idea #10556: Include GUFW as a GUI firewall frontend.
and i suppose this too.
Idea #11133: Make gnome-system-monitor more accessible via CTRL-ALT-DELETE,although i already expressed similar idea to support keyboard shortcut for system monitor it got less response.

Add "wine icon" to collection of nautilus emblems

I use quite a few wine applications, to test web pages in Windows-Specific web browsers such as netscape for windows, for instance. ;-)
I'd like to tag the browser icons on my gnome desktop with a label indicating "this is a wine application". So what would be more appropriate than the inclined little red wine glass, aka as the default wine icon. Sadly, there is no wine icon in the default collection of launcher emblems. So please add one to this default collection. It would make the emblems much more useful immediately (to me, that is).
