Empty root trash

I just discovered that the folder /root/.Trash contains everything I ever deleted while using a root nautilus window to manage root-owned folders...
Suffice to say it wasn't empty... ;)
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-empty-root-trash.html
Perhaps with all the "Better trash bin" type ideas, this might have already been mentioned...
We need a button or link next to the empty trash button that says something like "Empty root trash" or even "View root trash" with a gksu prompt when pressed...
Or, this could be integrated into some sort of "Disk Cleanup" program.

Please release future releases in DVD ISO distro's too please.
I use the unoficial DVD ISO's to set up many machines: servers, desktops, laptops, gnome & kde, and use same ISO for USB live-pendrive setup. On-site bootup & troubleshooting
Need something that is as complete as possible for when I do not have access to the web, and don't want to go digging around for some driver that should have been there to start off with (know this could be problematic for some archane hardware). Aslo include drivers for Intel Mac's & eeePC, as this is standardised hardware

This is concerning the graphical and the text based installer.
It`s a bad habit introduces by microsoft. Do not ask questions in the middle of the installation after you did already started to copy things.
(1) The user starts the installation.
(2) He is asked if he wants to install.
(3) Make as many hardware tests as you need.
(4) Now ask all needed questions.
(5) Install Ubuntu in one run. Tell the user he can no go away for perhaps X minutes.
Otherwise it`s annoying. Input answer, wait a bit, input answer, wait again over and over again. You can improve this!

Do not set the Ubuntu CD-ROM as a Default Repository for the Synaptic

I found it very frustrating when I first got into Ubuntu, and was looking around at the Packages to install, that I had to have the installation CD in my computer. Especially since it was a laptop and I didn't have my CD Drive in.
I eventually found out how to remove it as a repository source.
It should not be set as default, or perhaps, if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't.

It appears that one needs to create separate accounts (username and password) for ubuntuforums.org, launchpad.net and brainstorm.ubuntu.com
How difficult would it be to implement a single login?
Update : NOT a duplicate of OpenID idea #9.

OpenID will be implemented as the single-sign-on solution for Ubuntu websites.

Offer to create a separate /home partition and use existing ones

A separate partition for /home has been proposed for a long time in the forums. It implies some risks, though, so based on disk size Ubiquity should estimate the amount of space that should be left for / or whether a separate partition should be made at all. Then...
-The first time an user installs Ubuntu, he is given the option to set a separate /home. This option is selected by default, with a size for each partition based on a sane guess:
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7958/firstinstallaro2.png
-Of course, he can just choose not to set a separate /home. This option will be selected by default if the results of the system test suggest that's the best thing to do.
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/6498/firstinstallbfs6.png
-Manual install is also possible. Selecting it greys out everything related to separate /home, since it's implied that the user doesn't want to be guided.
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7976/firstinstallcvc2.png
-If the user set a separate /home, the next time he installs Ubuntu a new option appears and is selected by default, prompting to use the existing /home partition. All other options are still available, though.

Developer comments
I have always used a separate /home as well. Keeping /home after reinstallations is one major reason which has been mitigated by ubiquity preserving /home now (I didn't test that yet, though).
Either way ubiquity (the Live CD installer) should point this out clearly.
The other reason is that I want to use it from multiple Linux installations, but that's mostly a geek use case.
I have no idea what size / and /home should have by default,
I always use 6 GB for / and the rest for /home, but if someone wants to use huge databases, that'll break.
Thus I think we should stick to our current partitioning and rather improve the UI for keeping /home. There is always manual partitioning for people who actually care.

Mount all partitions from the file system with relatime!

Fedora 8, Mandriva 2008 and Pardus are using relatime in its partitions while the Ubuntu still does it automatically.
According to the wiki of Mandriva 2008 this option is the following:
"http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Notes#Faster_operations_o n_partitions
By default, the installer configures file systems to use the relatime option. This option greatly reduce the amount of I/O spent by the system in updating access date when a file is read or when a directory is browsed. Thus the load of both desktop and server machines is greatly reduced and lot of I/O tasks complete faster.
For laptops, the installer still default to noatime in order to ease power management.
Similarly, the sync option is no more used for FAT file systems such as on floppies. It has been replaced by the flush option which make operations way faster on such FAT formated devices."
I know that this subject has already been well commented ...

"ext3 partitions should be mounted with relatime/noatime for everyone to reduce unnessary disk activity, prevent useless unparking of harddisk heads for laptop users and increase performance (reading from disk or cache means writing to disk to update atime)"

The only way to install Urban Terror on a Ubuntu machine is to manually install it. This is a very good game that supports Linux natively. I think Ubuntu should add it to the repository.

ATI (now AMD) video card drivers that actually work

I know that the Ubuntu volunteers don't have any power over this, but I think that the parent company Canonical maybe could get some pull here. Maybe they could leverage the Dell partnership to force AMD's hands.
ATI Video card drivers are very poor. The thing just plain doesn't work, and I don't see this changing any time soon. This is probably the #1 thing holding Ubuntu back to the mass population where their laptops and desktops came with ATI motherboard chipsets and absolutely NO support for video, compiz, etc from AMD.
While I am not praising nvidia's effort (closed source only) at least their drivers work.
I propose that Canonical use their leverage in any way they feel possible to convince AMD to deliver high quality (and preferably open source) drivers for Ubuntu. They are not only holding back gaming on linux, but also adoption for every day users.
Developer comments
I am marking this as "In development" because now AMD has made the specifications for their cards available so this will likely improve as the open source drivers become more mature.
The closed source drivers are available post-install via jockey.

Codec Manager

As a user I want to be able to listen to audio or watch videos with the least amount of setup. I would like to have a single interface (Codec Manager) that lists all of the most common audio and video formats and shows me if I am missing the necessary codec for playback.
Use Case: Enable MP3 playback.
Precondition: MP3s are not currently playable.
1. User logs into the system.
2. User opens the Codec Manager.
3. System displays a list of common audio/video formats.
4. User selects MP3s.
5. System displays some info about MP3s.
6. System displays a list of available codecs.
7. User selects a codec and clicks Apply.
8. System downloads and installs the selected codec.
9. System informs the user when completed.
Other possible features:
- Display a list of audio/video types that are missing codecs.
- An auto-setup function, that grabs the recommended codec for all formats.
Audio and Video formats that should be supported:
Audio:
- MP3
- OGG
- AAC
- FLAC
- Real Audio
Video:
- MP4

Attacks the problem from the wrong angle. I don't think many users would care about a "codec manager", that sounds very much like a geek tool. Heck, *I* wouldn't care about a codec manager. I care about watching my videos. :-)
To me this already seems solved very elegantly with the existing easy-codec-installation.

Hello,
New users will find themselves in the situation of trying to change or set up something that is not provided "out of the box" by ubuntu like setting up hardware or looking for the software that does exactly what a certain software in their previous operating system could do ;-).
The first thing to do? Google it. Loads of results, outdated information... In the end you mix up different procedures and don't get your problem resolved.
Maybe would be good to have a "How do I...?" help button, lets say, under the same menu where "About Gnome" is, which will bring a "What do you want to do?" dialog. There the user could enter his question, for example "Set up canon scanner" or "edit video for portable device" and this would bring a knowledge base and/or forum thread search with related how-tos.
This would really simplify and centralize the way we find and share information relatied to advanced tasks.
What do you think?

On modern hardware the only reason swap is really needed is for suspending to disk so separate swap partition is complete waste.
It would be great to modify uswsusp (using kexec for example) to be able to use swap file on any regular partition to perform suspend2disk: 2.6 kernal already allow usage of dynamically allocated file on any partition as a swap file.
This improvement would also help to fix other suspend related issues and will make easier ubuntu-on-usb version.

Kernel Updates Preserve Menu.lst Order

Some users do not use the default 386 kernel. I for instance use the generic kernel. Every time I update my kernel it rearranges my menu.lst file and puts the 386 kernel at the top, making it the default for booting. My graphics aren't setup right in this kernel so it always freaks me out for a moment until I realize what happened. I know how to fix this and find it trivial, many users would not. Ubuntu needs to preserve the order of menu.lst items after kernel updates, if generic was the default it should stay that way.

Panel Deletion need double confirm

When using Xubuntu, it is useful to remove some item on the panel. However, it is also easy to delete a whole panel, or some essential area of a panel (e.g. notification area).
These are suggestion:
1) Panel and items on panel should have "no delete" option. Any attempt to remove "no delete" item need double confirm.
2) Panel itself and notification area should be by default "no delete"
3) There should be some handy way (right click), just in case all panels are deleted, user can restore it.
It improvement is not needed for people using Xubuntu quite a while, but is needed for newbie who is brave enough to reorganize the panel (especially I love M$ Windows style panel look and feel but I want opensource implementation).
